News from the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology
The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology held the annual Stephen L. Winter Lecture on June 18, 2014. Dr.
Winter was a highly respected physician and faculty member in the Division until his untimely death in 1983. His loss was
felt profoundly by his patients, students and colleagues. Through generous contributions from the Winter family, a
lectureship and the Winter Library were created in his honor to commemorate his dedication to academic medicine.
Over thirty people were in attendance to hear Dr. Jorge Marrero speak on the topic of Early Detection and Diagnosis of
Hepatocellular Carcinoma. Dr. Marrero is Professor of Medicine, Chief of Clinical Hepatology and Medical Director of the
Liver Transplant Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He received his Gastroenterology training here at the
University of Illinois at Chicago, where he discovered his interest in liver disease and liver transplantation.
It was a pleasure to welcome Dr. Marrero back to UIC!
