The UIC Nephrology Fellows, Swati Batki, MD, and Alice Ching, MD, debated against Rush University Medical Center on the topic of “Living Kidney Donation is Safe Long-term.” In this debate, UIC won the competition. Congratulations, Drs. Batki and Ching! The Controversies in Nephrology program presents interactive debates among nephrology fellows from the academic medical centers in Chicago. Pilz, MD Memorial Lecture The 9th Annual Clifford G. Pilz, MD Memorial Lecture took place on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 in the Moss Auditorium. The lecture was well attended by residents, fellows, faculty, family, and even former residents of Dr. Pilz. The lecture started off with a history of Dr. Pilz and then a history of the bow tie, Dr. Pilz was one to always wear a bowtie. We were honored to have a former chief resident give us her memories of being on rounds with Dr. Pilz. In April, Elizabeth Villagrana, administrative assistant in the Division of Cardiology, participated in the American Cancer Society Walk & Roll 2014 in a 15k bike ride. In previous issues, we have highlighted cardiology faculty participating in marathons and other physical activities. Today, we are highlighting the administrative staff and management who are committed to having a healthy heart. The entire Cardiology Team is dedicated to be role models for their patients. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ News from Dr. Finn’s Laboratory Ravi Ranjan, research specialist in the laboratory of Drs. Patricia W. Finn and David L. Perkins, has first authored a paper in the Journal of Innate Immunity. The paper studied if NFATc3 also has any function in macrophages. Ranjan and his collaborators discovered how protein molecules in immune cell promote the production of nitric oxide. Ranjan’s collaborators include Dr. Gye Young Park, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep, and Allergy, Dr. Lei Xiao, Manjula Karpurapu, Jing Deng, Sangwoon Chung, Yong Gyu Lee, Dr. John Christman, and Myungsoo Joo.
