HORIZON 2020 - LEIT – NMP

CONNECTING AMBITIONS
HORIZON 2020 - LEIT – NMP
FEBRUARY 2014
LEADERSHIP IN ENABLING AND INDUSTRIAL
TECHNOLOGIES (LEIT)
LEIT includes the parts of Horizon 2020 focusing on
new opportunities for industrial leadership in ICT,
Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) and space.
These are areas of key industrial competences
determining Europe’s global competitiveness.
The emphasis is on areas of research and
innovation with a strong industrial dimension and
where mastering new technological opportunities
will enable and drive innovation.
The objective is to achieve the EU industrial policy
goals, which represent an important component of
the EU Strategy for KETs. Projects that focus on
interactions and convergence across and between
different technologies and their relationships to
societal challenges are preferred.
NMP: FUNDING FOR NEW TECHNOLOGIES,
TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS
The development of state of the art technologies,
techniques and materials has a high priority within
Horizon 2020 because innovation is necessary to
get European organizations to the top of the world.
The second pillar within LEIT is NMP, the
programme for Nanotechnologies, Advanced
Materials, Advanced Manufacturing and
Processing, and Biotechnology. It has a total
budget of over 13.5 billion euro which makes it the
biggest programme within Horizon 2020.
Activities of the work programme will address the
whole innovation chain with technology readiness
levels (TRLs) spanning the crucial range from
medium levels to high levels preceding mass
production, and helping to bridge the gaps ("valley
of death") in this range. These activities will be
based on research and innovation agendas defined
by industry and business, together with the
research community, and have a strong focus on
leveraging private sector investment. For the TRLs,
dedicated support will therefore be provided for
larger-scale pilot lines and demonstrator projects
to facilitate industrial take-up and
commercialisation. There will be a strong focus on
the contribution of KETs to societal challenges.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Horizon 2020 is open to a wide range of
participants such as universities, institutes for
(applied) research, public authorities, SMEs and
larger corporations. To be eligible for EU funding,
cooperation in the form of a consortium is in most
cases a prerequisite. Regarding the so called SME
instrument SMEs can submit their applications on
an individual basis. Will you join?
COME IN ACTION
Deadlines have been set for the next two years. So
come into action and decide which topic connects
best to your ambitions. The main fundable topics
with the 2014 and 2015 deadlines are as follows:
1.
Nanotechnologies, Advanced Materials and
Production (NMP):
This call includes topics on nanotechnologies,
advanced materials, production and support
actions for the deployment of KETs. It includes
contributions to cross-cutting KETs, addresses
both KETs for multiple applications, and KETs
for applications in specific societal challenges
or focus areas; as well as safety, outreach,
structuring, business models and other
innovation issues. The 2014 deadlines are May
th
th
6 and October 10 . The 2015 deadline is
th
March 26 .
There is also funding for the specific SME
instrument topic on “accelerating the
industrial uptake of nanotechnologies,
advanced materials or advanced
manufacturing and processing technologies by
SMEs”. The 2014 deadlines for Phase 1 are:

to drive the creation of a high-tech building
industry which turns energy efficiency into a
sustainable business, fostering EU
competitiveness in the construction sector on
a global level.
th
The 2014 deadlines are March 20 and
th
December 9 .
Biotechnology:
Generation of scientific and technological
know-how and its translation into industrial
products and solutions for societal challenges
is paramount in securing European leadership
in this key enabling technology, and it is as
such at the very core of the current call.
The EU’s aim in supporting biotechnology
research is to improve our understanding of
terrestrial and aquatic biological systems and,
more importantly, to exploit this knowledge to
boost technological innovation. Thus,
biotechnology can significantly contribute to
the development of more sustainable
production processes products based on
renewable raw materials.
th
The 2014 deadline is March 12 and the 2015
th
deadline is February 24 .
5. Sustainable process industries (SPIRE):
The general goal is to optimise industrial
processing, reducing the consumption of energy
and resources, and minimising waste.
th
The 2014 deadlines are March 20 and December
th
9 .
All themes have specific calls for proposals that are
further elaborated in the Work Programme.
MAKE AN IMPACT
The evaluation of all proposals is done by
independent specialists which takes about five
months. Experts will evaluate the proposals on the
basis of the criteria ‘scientific and/or technological
excellence’, ‘potential impact’ and ‘quality and
efficiency of the implementation’
CONNECT WITH US
There is also funding for the specific SME
instrument topic on “SME boosting
biotechnology-based industrial processes
driving competitiveness and sustainability”.
The deadlines are the same as mentioned
above.
3.
Factories of the future (FoF):
The Factories of the Future Public-Private
Partnership (PPP) initiative aims at helping EU
manufacturing enterprises, in particular SMEs,
to adapt to global competitive pressures by
developing the necessary KETs to support EU
manufacturing across a broad range of sectors.
th
The 2014 deadlines are March 20 and
th
December 9 .
4.
Energy-efficient buildings (EeB):
The objective of the Energy-efficient Buildings
Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Initiative is
Do you want to realize your NMP and Biotecambitions on a European scale? Or do you want to
