Mechthild Wörsdörfer was born in Eltville am Rhein and studied economics at Heidelberg,
Montpellier and Brussels before working for four years in the EU representative office of the
German Industry Federation (Bundesverband Deutscher Industrie). She joined the European
Commission in 1995, where she started her career in the Commission's enterprise and
industrial policy department, relation industry-research, IT. She then served as Assistant to
the Director-General of the same department. From 1999 until 2004, she worked in the
private office of Enterprise and Information Society Commissioner Erkki Liikanen. She was
then appointed Deputy Head of Unit for Entrepreneurship before taking up her post as head
of Unit for SME Policy Development in July 2005. From July 2009 to January this year, she
was Acting Director for "Promotion of SME's competitiveness".
