Airmyn Fun Run
The end of the road for Table Top Sales?
Airmyn will host its first 5k fun run on Sunday, July 13th, in
order to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, British
Heart Foundation, and Martin House Hospice. The idea came
about when friends were chatting about wanting to try to
keep fit, so organiser Victoria Hovelmann decided to put on a
community fun run.
The next Table Top Sale in the Airmyn Memorial Hall on
th
Sunday, the 15 June, may well be the last. The number of
stallholders at the monthly sales has remained constant in
recent times at around ten or a dozen, with a peak of around
twenty in November, but the number of customers attending
has plummeted disastrously during the past couple of years, to
such an extent that the organisers and even the most loyal
stallholders have reluctantly reached the conclusion that all
their hard work has become just a waste of their time.
The day will start at 11.30am at the Memorial Hall and will
feature an appearance from local boxer Zak Collins, with a
barbecue, fun day, a bar, music, bouncy castles, tombola and
12 craft stalls. At the time of writing there are 80 confirmed
runners but the organisers are still looking for more, along
with helpers and additional funding for the event.
It you would like to participate in the 5k run, book your stall
for £5 a table, sponsor the event, or feature your business,
please contact Victoria on 07816 160057, or email
[email protected], or search Airmyn Fun Run/BBQ/5K
on Facebook.

Two more canal trips
Two more free boat trips along the Goole-Knottingley canal,
starting from the Waterways Museum at Goole, are being
organised for Airmyn people as a follow-up to the original
successful outing which took place in March. They will be on
Thursday, the 19th June and Monday, the 23rd June. At the
time of writing, both are well on the way towards being full
but, if you would be interested in going, contact Cathy
Galloway on 01405 764987 for more details. If it turns out
that more people wish to go than can be accommodated this
time, then we will have to look towards organising a 4th trip.

Consequently, unless by some miracle there is a really good
attendance at the June sale, it is intended to stop organising
any more for the time being and to take a lengthy break from
them. This will mean that the Hall will lose an income
averaging around £100 per month, this being the usual
proceeds from stall rents at £4 each + the takings from sales of
food and drink from the kitchen + the income made from a
stall which is run by the organisers themselves, all of which is
paid into the Hall’s funds.
There was a time when so many people were coming to these
Table Top Sales that someone had to be on full-time duty at
the roundabout to turn drivers away if the car park was already
full. In those days, though, the diversity of the second-hand
goods on sale was much greater than it is now and extended to
items such as furniture, tools, bikes and domestic goods. That
wide range in the types of items on display and available to buy
has narrowed very sharply and that is probably the main
reason why these Sales have so obviously lost their appeal.

Dear Editor ...
Coach-house project progress
According to a number of residents, a team of Surveyors have been active, in the
field opposite Glew's Garage. Possibility that there could be plans to link up the
existing Vehicle Park with a 2nd (32 ACRE)VP, plus infill, a very large combined
area Industrialised, in the near or distant future?
The Coach-house Committee has recently
had a structural survey of the building
professionally carried out as a necessary
preliminary to submitting a full planning
application to the East Riding of Yorkshire
Council for permission to carry out the
necessary renovations to the building so as to
convert it into a multi-purpose community
facility.
Inside info..British Car Auctions (BCA), in taking over local company NKL,
arrangements are for NKL to be paid in 3 stages, by (BCA). 3rd stage could be on
approval of the 32 acre site. IF this is the case, there could be added local
pressure involved, who knows. BCA operate mainly with a Self Employed Driver
set up, with Drivers often taking vehicles home over night, thus their operators
come from a wide catchment area, thus BCA may not involve many extra local
operators. However, NKL have requested that BCA retain the existing local
operators, a reasonable number.
According to one resident, Capitol Park Goole, originally a 310 acres of grade 1
land, was first taken over by Yorkshire Forward in 1992, Part/Wholly Tax Payer
Funded; and with no restriction clauses, ie not suitable for local small firms. Then
as now, SMEs employ 40 to 50% of the working population. SMEs some become
large Companies. Thus available brown field sites, should be the first option.
Question most asked, £500,000 private funding by the potential developers, why
and for what purpose, 32 acres on the cheap?
The Open Day which was held in April was
once again very well attended and raised
almost £500 altogether for the project.
A new Bonus Ball competition was started
and so far the winning numbers have been 46
(Pauline Bilton), 25 (Alan Shaw) and 46 again
(well done, Pauline!) As the time that this
item is being written, there are still two more
weeks to go in this competition.

We are confident that the members of Airmyn Parish Council will having put in
considerable time, effort and research to represent the Majority of Airmyn
residents and provide a good opposition to the second stage of the Vehicle Park.
Concerns remain that the wishes of the majority will be out voted, not only by
East Riding but also from local Personnel as happened in 2010 with the first
stage. What legacy are we leaving for future generations? Will they thank us?

Strawberry Tea and open-air ‘Songs of Praise’ church service
Roger and Veilia Thomas are once again, for the umpteenth year in a row, kindly
playing host to the Strawberry Tea event, which is one of the main elements in the
fund-raising programme each year that helps to keep our church in Airmyn up and
running. This year, it will take place on Sunday, the 29th June, commencing at 2.00
pm. Admission will be £2 per person and for this you will be fed and watered and
given the chance to walk around the large garden of 63, High Street, which this year is
looking lovelier than ever. All the usual stalls will be available for you to browse
around and you can also sit and relax and chat to your neighbours for a while, either
under a parasol to protect you from the blazing summer sun or under an umbrella or
in a marquee to protect you from a June downpour.
At approximately 4.00pm, you will be able, if you wish, to move next door into the
churchyard where an open-air ‘Songs of Praise’ service will be held, weather
permitting. If the weather is not good, this service will, of course, be transferred into
the church itself. It should last about one hour.
If you have a favourite hymn which you would like to have sung as part of this service,
then please let any member of the Airmyn PCC know as soon as possible.
