February 2014 Published by Barthell OES Home Co-Editors Mae Schmitt & Lori Steffen
Hi and Happy 2014!
I wish to update residents and families, our staff and the community about services we
provide here on our campus at Barthell OES Home, Arlin Falck Assisted Living and our Independent Living Apartments.
In 1991 The Mathilda A. Barthell Order of Eastern Star Home was reincorporated to
the Barthell OES Home. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and we are managed by a
five member Board of Directors. We are licensed as a 46 bed intermediate care facility. On
our campus we have six independent living apartments and 32 assisted living apartments. As a
private pay facility, many think we are not competitive in our rates but we are very competitive in our rates in all of our facilities. We do accept short term stays in our nursing facility if
we have availability. You are welcome to call and visit us at any time.
Our Board of Directors is interviewing for a new Administrator for our facility and we look forward to
meeting the applicants. We have remodeled our business office and administrator’s office these past few
months, so come in and see our changes. As many of you know we could not operate our home without our
staff; they do an excellent job taking care of our residents.
We so enjoyed all the visitors over the holidays, family and friends, and many carolers. We are blessed
to have such a great support of our community here in Decorah.
Sylvia L. Steine Provisional Administrator
The nursing department has been busy the past few months implementing the electronic medical computer program, Point Click Care. It has been a group effort as we learn together.
I am proud of the Nurses and Certified Nurse Aides as we continue to provide excellent care to our residents.
We are contracted with Winneshiek Medical Center Rehab Department to provide physical therapy, occupational &
speech therapy, and the therapists come to Barthell OES Home. We have a physical therapy room with various types of
weights and equipment, parallel bars, nu-step and therapy bed to enable staff to provide therapy programs as directed by
the therapists. We offer an afternoon group exercise program every day for residents to gently exercise before supper.
Alison Bishop RN Director of Nursing
I am Mary Holthaus, the Eastern Star dietary supervisor. We have had a very busy winter season.
Serving meals and cookies to our residents has been a pleasure over the holidays. The kitchen staff and
I want to thank the Barthell Eastern Star Board for the purchase of our new stove. It has made the
cook’s job easier. Everyone is always welcome to come and have a meal with our residents. Call
ahead, if possible, and ask for the dietary staff in the kitchen to inform us as to the date, time, and the
number of guests to expect for the meal. We are all looking forward to Spring.
