Hafiford Hoafillne A PUBLICATION OF THE GOOD NEWS PRESS VOLUME XXVllll No. 6 June 2014 KEEP'NG UP THE YARD Wet[, the otd mower finatty quit. lt conked out on me [ate tast fatt and I was hoping against hope that if I stuck it in the garage, waited 5 months and putted the cord everything would be just fine. Surprise, surprise...it hasn't worked out that way. So while I have been detiberating over whether or not I shoutd invest in a fancy new lawn mowing machine or just hit the bargain bin at Sears, I have been trying vatiantty to keep up my yard with a push reel mower. You know, the otd fashioned mower that relies not on horse-power, but on elbow grease? Let me tetl you, it has not been an easy feat. I secretty wonder what my neighbors think of me huffing and puffing around the yard with that thing. There are many reasons why push reel mowers are not that poputar. The intense effort it takes to push the thing through lush lowa lawns makes it a very hard setl in these parts. When it comes to mowing, the function of the btades is more tike a pair of scissors than the propetter-type btade. lt takes muttiple passes to keep the lawn from looking tike a ten year-otd with a bad hair cut. And if that isn't bad enough, it cuts a much smatter swath of grass than gas-powered mowers. It just is not an efficient way to keep the lawn mowed. But it works in a pinch. Sort of. I was sweating and pushing the mower around my yard not too tong ago and I got to thinking about tove. (lf anything, using the reel mower gives you time to think!) You know, we Christians spend an awful lot of time talking about [ove. How God loves us, how "They Witt Know We Are Christians By Our Love", how love is patient and kind...that type of stuff. Yet, love isn't the endatt, be'att solution that we suppose it to be. Sometimes we appty love as if it is the onty thing we need to fix a probtem or situation, but looking back we see that we have missed a few spots and we have left a few peopte behind. Every time I had to turn that mower around and retrace my steps, I thought about those tufts of grass being the peopte who are hard to reach or unresponsive to the gospel" The thing is there are just some spots in the yard that are hard to cut, some places where the grass just bends the wrong way or is too close to the fence to be cut with the mower. Instead of going back and trimming time after time, it is just easier to yank the btades of grass out of the yard. There are bigger and better things to do. We Christians can be pretty naiVe about our [ove. We think that making a good faith effort to love someone shoutd produce quick results. But some peopte are just harder to love than others. When people don't respond to our tove, we can assure oursetves that we've tried our best and simply move on to others who are more responsive and show love back to us. Yet Jesus says that it is those who do not return our love that need the most attention: "lf you tove those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? (cont. inside) ============================================= PUBLISHED BY Community United Presbyterian Church 315 N. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:32-36) There have been times when I have been tempted to take a pair of scissors into the yard with me. Sometimes that would just be easier than mowing over the same spot again and again. Just when I start thinking I am crazy, I realize that I do care enough to try again. I turn the mower around and keep going. If only I could be so persistent when someone doesn't respond to my preaching, to my wave at the store, or my phone call. If only I was willing to keep trying. Is the effort worth it? Well, if Jesus didn't give up on us, I suppose that means that it is time to roll up the sleeves, crank up the “mower” and get back to work! We don't want to miss a spot! Pastor Nathan Baby Lamb #2 is on the Way! As you are all aware, Jenn and I are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the newest member of our family! Who knows? By the time you are reading this, she may be here already! Anyway, as you might suppose, June will be a busy month in the Lamb household. Not only will Jenn and I be adjusting to life with a new baby, but we will be helping Izzie adjust to life with a new sister! What that means is that there will be times during the month of June when I will not be available. I will try to keep the congregation posted on my availability throughout the month, but if you have a pastoral need that arises during this time and cannot reach me, please call one of the elders or email the church at [email protected] and someone will get in touch with you as soon as they can! I appreciate your understanding and certainly welcome your prayers for our family! Sincerely, Pastor Nathan Noisy Collection Sunday, June 8 May Collection: $187.60 Total Received: $692.75 Goal: $1500.00 Let’s have some fun, make some noise, and support the mission of the church! The Noisy Collection is received on the 2nd Sunday of each month—to benefit our General Mission Pledge for 2014. The Pentecost Offering is traditionally received on the day of Pentecost (June 8, 2014). It provides a direct way to meet the needs of children at risk, youth, and young adults. Congregations are encouraged to keep 40 percent of the Offering to support ministry with children at risk in their communities. The General Assembly’s portion (60 percent) provides leadership development opportunities for Presbyterian youth and young adults and supports children-at-risk programs at the national level. Since 1998, Presbyterians of all ages have raised over $7 million for these ministries that benefit younger members of God’s family. Please prayerfully consider what God is calling you to share with the youth in our community and give generously to the Pentecost Offering at CUPC on June 8, 2014. Now it’s my understanding we have never made this much on this before, so pat yourself on the back girls! Ya’ll did good. And I’ve heard lots of positive comments on the food and event.
