Letter of Intent & Short Bio:
Hi everyone! My submission to the PARA Assembly is based on a passion to represent the needs and
promote the goals of my resident colleagues across Alberta. I did my undergraduate degree at the
University of Alberta and medical school in Calgary and as a native Albertan I bring a solid understanding
of the organization of PARA and can be a strong voice for Alberta’s residents. In this role, I would
continue to help further PARA as a united team, specifically in the areas of clinical research, more
effective health policies and resident well-being. Joining this team, to represent all of you, would be an
incredible opportunity.
After graduating from U of C Med, I was accepted as The Calgary Department of Ophthalmology’s first
research fellow. This amazing opportunity allowed me to work with the Department of Surgery, U of C
PGME and the university at large to develop this position. I also worked closely with the past research
fellows at U of A to make this position a success. In this role, I’ve collaborated on international projects
with colleagues, not only in ophthalmology but in many other disciplines, and learned to solve problems
systematically, efficiently and successfully. My growing areas of interest include patient low-vision aid
development, resident teaching and streamlining current procedures in ophthalmology.
I’ve always been active in the community and in undergrad I served as Circle K International’s U of A
chapter club president for 2 years, giving me valuable leadership experience and skills developing
community volunteer projects from the ground up. During my involvement on the board, we had the
largest turnout to events to-date. In medical school, I went on join the peer-listening group,
professionalism committee and was our class representative for patient presentations.
While we all struggle with the demands of residency, I feel it is important to be a well-rounded
individual. Recently, I worked with another surgical resident to organize a social event for the surgery
R1s and serve as a co-social planner for my residency group. My friends would say (I hope!) that I have a
caring and friendly nature and during medical school, I was a big in the big brother big sister program
and I recently joined a group that fosters rescue dogs! As a Member at Large, I would use my positive
personality to be an effective advocate you can rely on to achieve your goals.
