Kim Smith is vice president of Attack Helicopter Programs and senior site
executive for The Boeing Company in Mesa, Ariz.
Named to this position in April 2014, Smith leads the more than 4,400 Boeing
employees who design, produce and support AH-64 Apache and AH-6i Light
Attack/Reconnaissance helicopters for the U.S. Army and defense forces around the
globe. Boeing’s Mesa operations are part of the Vertical Lift organization within the
Boeing Military Aircraft business.
Prior to her current role, Smith served as Boeing vice president of Environment,
Health and Safety starting in late 2011. Under her leadership, Boeing significantly
reduced emissions, energy use and water consumption while increasing deliveries of
commercial and military aircraft by more than 50 percent. She also led companywide
efforts resulting in a 25 percent improvement in Boeing’s workplace safety performance.
Between 2009 and 2011, Smith was a director in the Boeing Commercial
Airplanes Supplier Management organization, responsible for contracting, performance
and strategy development involving Spirit Aerosystems, a major supplier that produces
all Boeing 737 fuselages and structural components for 747, 767, 777 and 787
airplanes.
Smith originally joined Boeing in 1997 as a production engineer, and held a
number of key positions including:
 Leading Auburn Machining and Emergent Operations and Advanced
Metal Structures business units at Boeing Commercial Airplanes,
 Quality Assurance with both the 737 program and the Commercial
Airplanes Fabrication Division, and
 Manufacturing Research and Development for the 737 and 757 programs.
Between 1999 and 2002, Smith held positions at GKN Sinter Metals, which uses
advanced techniques to produce complex, powdered-metal parts for automotive and
other industries. As plant manager, she had profit and loss responsibility for the
business, and was accountable for manufacturing, quality, engineering, supply chain, ,
facilities and finance.
Smith earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at Michigan State
University and an Executive MBA and Leadership Certificate from Seattle University.
She serves on Michigan State University’s Mechanical Engineering Advisory Board and
The Nature Conservancy’s International Leadership Council.
