It began its activities with research on Alternate Medicines, Bio diversity conservation, Environmental Protection, Waste management, Forestry Seeds collection organization of Adivasis in Tribal villages. NMCT extended its activities by forming Self Help Groups for tribals and dalits, providing them capacity building and income generation activities. Native Medicare Charitable Trust has been a leader in fostering and supporting the development of communitydriven approaches to HIV prevention, care and support, and impact mitigation. Its work also includes reducing stigma and discrimination, particularly among the most vulnerable and marginalised communities key to the epidemic – Men who have Sex with Men (MSM), migrant populations and adults and children living with and affected by HIV. NMCT is also currently implementing care and support to PLHIVs and their families covering 4 blocks in Pollachi. It is accredited by Credibility Alliance, New Delhi. NMCT also work with the primitive tribes Irulars in Anaikkatty hills to enhance their livelihood. NMCT is reaching to most vulnerable women in nine districts of Tamilnadu through Tailoring trainings and Tailoring schools. Our Vision “Sustainable holistic development among the underserved”. It is a matter of great pride that NMCT has more than 500 local donors, a dozen of funding partners in development and hundreds of volunteers. The development activities in NMCT is made possible by support and efforts from our funding partners, friends, and well wishers. You have demonstrated real commitment to safe guard the dignity of the underserved in our society. NMCT continued care and support for HIV/AIDS infected and affected families in Pollachi taluk with the support of KKS – BMZ Germany, partially with the contribution from Give India. Our efficiency in the implementation of the project helped us to continue the program till the end of 2014. The children orphaned by HIV/AIDS have been looked after in ABHAYA with the support of KKS and SSF. Hundreds of Tribal families improved in the quality of their life with the support from NABARD through the Integrated Tribal Development Project in the Karamadai block of Coimbatore. The targeted Intervention project supported by TANSACS in Tirupur has create awareness on HIV/AIDS in among workers 72 industries in Tirupur. The performance in the project led us to get a new project on to cover migrants Coimbatore District. Silai Schools in 7 districts supported by USHA International had a number of success stories during the year. The Silai schools that help empowerment of poor women is now reached to 2 more districts Darmapuri & Krishnagiri. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 2 NMCT celebrated its “Silver Jubilee at Gopanari, Tribal village. Other annual celebrations of the organization, “Rojakootam Day and Diwali Day” celebrations for the children of HIV affected were successfully completed. The Pongal vizha for the Triblas in Karamadai Block also was a grant program. The National Consultation on HIV/AIDS - Care & Support held under the CaSP Project helped us to advocate the better life of affected. Sankaranarayanan Managing Trustee ADIVASI DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE Adivasi Development Programme, commenced in 2007, aims at providing livelihood opportunities and improvement in the quality of life of tribal families. The implementation of comprehensive Adivasi Development Programmes had provided several insights for NMCT in framing strategies for holistic development of tribal regions. There are at present 11 Self help groups, 6 youth groups and 5 children clubs to organize different activities. Trainings on capacity building, empowerment and entrepreneurship are conducted to the women, youth and children to solve their social issues and improve their economic status. The programme is supported by PWDS, Marthandam. Community certificates obtained Income certificates obtained Tribal ID cards obtained Old age pension obtained Marriage assistance received Education scholarship ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 75 52 47 15 06 08 3 INTERVENTIONS FOR SUPPLEMENTARY LIVELIHOOD ACTIVITIES FOR NTFP DEPENDENT TRIBES COST EFFECTIVE CULTIVATION OF MEDICINAL PLANTS FOR INCOME GENERATION TO TRIBAL POOR With the support from Murugappa Chettiar Research Centre, NMCT has been cultivating Gymnema sylvestre since 2013. Gymnema sylvestre is an important anti diabetic drug yielding medicinal plant. The cost effective propagation of G. sylvestre has been developed and plants are distributed to scheduled tribal farmers in Sorandi, Koravankandi, Pudukkad and Koodapatti hamlets of Velliyankadu Panchayat of Coimbatore district. NMCT has planted the Gymnema sylvestre nearly 1 acre of land in each of the above villages. The tribal farmers are greatly benefitted with minimal input cost and market linkages from medical plant cultivation. FABRICATION OF AN EFFICIENT WATER FILTERS FOR RURAL AREAS from drinking water problems over many decades. The fabrication of an efficient water filter using biomass based activated carbon has provided safe, clean and hygienic drinking water in the tribal areas. 5 water filters have been successfully installed during this year. SOLAR MOTOR WATER PROJECT With the support from MCRC, NMCT installed solar powered water motor that is specially designed to lift water from river to water tank in Koodapatti village of Sorandi. In Sorandi village, there is a rivulet of Bhavani river passing through and from which the villagers carry the water they need for drinking, washing & bathing each day. They make this They walk 2 to 3 times a day and carrying water becomes difficult for women and children. By installation of the solar motor, 15 families living in the village obtain water for irrigation, horticulture farms, gardens, drinking and other similar applications. The majority of tribal households residing in Sorandi village of Velliyankadu panchayat continue to suffer ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 4 ABHAYA STUDENTS SHELTER NMCT with the support from Karl Kuebel Stiftung (KKS) and Anna Schmidt School, Germany has established Abhaya Students Shelter (ASS) in 2008, with a vision to support, bringing up and educating helpless girl children and making them self reliant. Since 2012, Small Steps Foundation (SSF), USA is supporting for education. ASS is located in Kalappanaickenpalayam village near Kanuvai children. Throughout the year ASS focuses on learning and the educational opportunities available for our residents. C. Madhuvina, L. Isakiammal, Jyothimani & Thilagavathi were scored high marks in class 10 examination and their photographs were depicted on the huge billboard outside the Government High school Kanuvai. This is achieved in many ways: • Through the utilization of Government middle & high schools liaison working closely with teachers and school officials. • Through a tutoring program for individual and group learning assistance. • Collaboration between local school/college administrators, teachers, faculties & warden of Abhaya to ensure a continuity of care and learning for the children. in Coimbatore district. The home was started initially with 15 orphaned/semi orphaned girl children. A total of 27 children were served by the Abhaya Students Shelter in 2013. 5 of the children have been newly admitted into home this year. As in the previous year, children are continuously going to Government middle school -Kalapanayakanpalayam, Government high schoolKanuvai, Avinasilingam Higher secondary schoolVadakovai and Government women’s polytechnic college, Gandhipuram for education. ABHAYA CHILDREN REWARDED WITH SCHOOL TOPPERS AWARD: ASS values the importance of education in the lives of our RECOGNITION FROM SOCIAL WELFARE DEPARTMENT In view of getting registration from District Social Welfare Officers, Department of Social Welfare an application has been submitted to Social welfare board. A detailed proposal has been submitted with complete records including sanitary certificate from Deputy Director of Health Services, NOC from Divisional officer, Fire Rescue services, Medical certificate for cook, Stability certificate from Licensed building surveyor to District social welfare board. As per section 34(3) of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2000, NMCT has successfully obtained license from Directorate of Social Defence, Chennai for running a child protection home in India. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 5 VOLUNTEERS PROGRAMME i. Bridge Builder Volunteer’s Programme Volunteers Service “Weltwarts” Bridge Builder Program (BBP) is supported by the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of the German Government (BMZ) and under this program young people from Germany visit developing countries to gain international exposure through Karl Kübel Stiftung für Kind und Familie (KKS), Germany, NMCT became a part of Weltwarts program since 2008. The main purpose of the program is to: • Increase knowledge among young Germans about poverty and development work • Create public awareness in Germany about culture in India • Increase the global intercultural understanding • Develop intercultural skills • Share knowledge and skills and benefit to the NGO work • Learn about the Indian culture • Taught games and extracurricular activities to the children Two German Volunteers Ms. Floesser Janina & Ms. Frederike Becker stay at NMCT- ABHAYA under WELTWARTS youth program and undertake voluntary service to deprived children at Abhaya. During their they taught English, soft skills training, games and extra-curricular activities to the children. In addition they also extended to help for the preparation of case studies of PLHIVs and families of CaSP project, Pollachi. They visited families of PLHIVs in villages and interacted with the community, women SHGs and documented the various impacts of the project. BBP was a mutual learning experience for both the volunteers and the organization. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 6 Volunteer Ms. Shelly, Bharathiyar University also visited Abhaya during the month of September 2013 and undertake voluntary service at Abhaya. She is currently doing BSW in Germany. She also assisted the children in games and cycling classes. ii. MSW Placement Training Fieldwork is an integral part of social work education. The placement/field visit training is an innovative programme that blends the students with real professionalism. The programme was designed with the goal – to provide students with an opportunity to apply theories in practical situations for problem solving with individuals, groups and communities. The programme was initiated in 2001 and 12 batches have successfully completed the course. The participants are awarded with completion certificate at the end of the course. This year 2013, a total of 25 students from various colleges like Bishop Appasamy college-Coimbatore, Cauvery college-Trichy, Sri Krishnia Arts & Science-Coimbatore, Hindustan college-Coimbatore, STC College-Pollachi, Avinashilingam university-Coimbatore, Bharathiyar university-Coimbatore, Sri Narayanan Guru college-Coimbatore were completed the placement training. During the training course, didactic sessions comprising of corporate social responsibility, adult learning principles, fund raising techniques, documentation & report writing was handled by eminent resource persons and students were exposed to field based project in Tirupur and Coimbatore district. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 7 CARE & SUPPORT OF HIV/AIDS AFFECTED & HIV PREVENTION (CaSP) NMCT receives a grant from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-financed by Karl Kuebel Stiftung (KKS), Germany to implement the project on “Care and Support for HIV/ AIDS affected families and HIV Prevention” in four blocks namely Pollachi South, Pollachi North, Anamalai and Kinathukadavu of Coimbatore district, Tamilnadu. The project has reached 885 people living with HIV/ AIDS, 667 children affected by HIV and 720 affected families. In order to ensure the sustainability of CaSP project & to implement the recommendations from midterm evaluation, NMCT has extended the project from May 2014 to December 2014. The project partners had also realized the demand of services and sanctioned the extension proposal. i. National Consultation on HIV/AIDS – Care & Support Recognizing the crucial need to scale up the provision of care, support and treatment services for PLHIVs and affected families, NMCT in co-ordination with Karl ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 8 Kuebel Stiftung (KKS), Germany organized National Consultation on HIV/AIDS - Care and Support from 1-3 August in Coimbatore district, Tamilnadu. This three-day meeting was comprised over 90 participants representing donors, policy makers, implementing partners, national & international NGOs and community leaders. This consultation helped crystallize issues related to care, support and treatment of HIV/AIDS with valuable insights & specific recommendations were derived on scaling up of focused CST services. Many eminent dignitaries & leading HIV/AIDS specialist have participated in this National Consultation. Dr. Stefan Weckbach, Consul General of Germany, Chennai, Mr. Ralf Tepel, Executive Director, KKS, Shri. Rajendra Ratnoo, I.A.S., Former Project Director, TANSACS, Shri. Prakash R. Sabde, Project Director-MSACS, Thiru. S.M. Velusamy, Former Mayor of Coimbatore, and Dr. Laxman Bharathi, NACO were the key chief guests in the inauguration ceremony of the National Consultation on 1st August 2013. Mr. Anand Grover, Director, Lawyers Collective & United Nation representative member Mr.P.R. Natarajan, Member of Parliament and Mr.C.S.Vaidyanathan, Senior Advocate of Supreme Court were the Chief Guests for Valedictory function. ii. Santhippom Positive Welfare Society: IMPACTS • The project demonstrated excellence in networking & linkages with donors, government departments, local panchayats, education institutions & policy makers through effective advocacy. This has helped in better implementation of the project and providing sustainable (nutrition, social entitlements & education support) provisions to PLHIVs & affected families. • As many as 358 PLHIVs have been linked into various government schemes consisting of widow pension, UPT card, free ART, Free bus pass ART land patta. Children have been linked with free higher education support through various educational institutions in Coimbatore district. • The project has successfully formed 22 PLHIV focused special SHGs consisting of 110 members. • 110 PLHIV have been provided with income generation programs including coir making, petty shopping, flower & vegetable sales, goats & calf, catering etc which helps them to render better livelihood. • More than 300 PLHIVs, affected families including children are being continuously accessing nutritious support, accessing ART treatment, financial support for medical treatment, psychological counseling and financial supports for children living with HIV who lost their parents. The project has successfully registered a community based organsiation namely Santhippom Positive Welfare Society with the 13 elected executive board members for the sustainability of the project. The object of the network is to support for social protection, nutrition Food, education, vocational skill training, psychological, shelter & care, Health and economical support for the PLHIVs and affected families. The CBO was registered on 29th July 2013 and bank account has been opened on 27th August 2013. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 9 INTEGRATED TRIBAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECT NMCT is implementing Tribal Development Project covering 750 tribal families in 18 villages of Tholampalayam and Velliyannkadu Panchayats in Karamadai block of Coimbatore district with the support from National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Chennai since 2012. The area is predominantly tribal and remotely located surrounded with dense forest. The major tribal residents are Irulas. The project is aimed at upliftment and for improving the livelihood of poor tribal people in Karamadai block. Under this project, 300 tribal families who own their lands are supported for orchard cultivation, and the other 450 landless families are supported for livelihood activities such as sheep ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 10 rearing, calf rearing, bullocks & agri implements, milch animal and poultry. Over 500 tribal families have been brought under the programme and an area of around 250 acres, spread over 18 hamlets in Tholampalayam and Velliyangadu Panchayats have been brought under ‘wadis’ of amla, mango & sapota along with boundary plantation of silver oak, casurina & teak plants. The programme focuses on alleviating poverty, and strengthening livelihoods through an integrated tribal livelihood support program based on the ‘Wadi’ model which works upon the core component of agro-horticulture development, with the primary unit of support being the house hold. Industry was yet to realize the seriousness of the problem and hence as an essential component of the intervention, NMCT with the funding support from Tamilnadu State AIDS Control Society (TANSACS), prevention of HIV/AIDS among migrants has been implemented in Tirupur district since 2011. The objective of the project is to prevent STI/HIV/AIDS and to improve service delivery & linkages among the migrant workers. Under this project, the migrants who are working in textile industries, dying industries, garment factories and other small industries are covered. The major activities with the target groups under this project were one-one education, one-group education, ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 12 counseling for the high risk groups, referral services for ICTC Centers, STI clinics and ART centres, organize STI camps at the migrant workplaces, identification and promotion of peer leaders (PLs), condom promotion through free condom distributions, free condom outlets and promotion of condom social marketing, advocacy meeting with the top management of industries, street plays, congregation events, etc. NMCT also engaged with Industrial Associations in an effort to have the programs managed and owned by them entirely in the long run by ensuring a large coverage and sustainability of the programs. Overall coverage was on about 170 industries in the selected blocks of Tirupur district and reached over 44,437 industrial & brickclin workers in the districts. The project was able to reach 9,641 HRGs (high risk groups includes female sex workers, male sex workers) to ensure the prevention among the Core and high risk persons to contain the epidemic. The effective implementation of project on intervention among the migrants workers in Tirupur district led an extension project is being sanctioned for Coimbatore district by TANSACS during 2013. Areas for the project include the whole district. The project started in the 2011 and in the first phase of the project, NMCT implemented in Coimbatore district. During the second phase (2012), it extended the project in 6 districts of Tamilnadu in Tirupur, Erode, Dindigul, Karur, Namakkal and Nilgris. In the third phase, NMCT obtained extension to carry out silai school project in Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri. NMCT has successfully completed tailoring training in Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri. Since its inception, the project has registered a significant change in the lives of women population and established good rapport within the communities. 15 entrepreneurs in each district were selected with an agreement of undertaking to perform the activities USHA Silai School in the village. VIMUKTHA FEDERATION Vimuktha Federation generated from NMCT-KKS child labour eradication project from 2004 – 2007 comprises of 1080 members under 5 clusters with 85 SHGs. NMCT registered Vimuktha Federation as a Trust in January 2007 with 15 BLF leaders. The aim of the trust is to support for underprivileged women and their families by capacity building, skill training and empowerment. The SHGs have their savings accumulated to over Rs. 39,00,000/- as on March 2014 which provides for internal lending for the needy members. second election to elect their leaders. These elections were conducted in cluster levels and block level. Cluster consists of 13- 15 Self Help Groups. The federation has five clusters making it into one block. Vimuktha Election A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. - John Maxwell A group or a federation needs leaders for the better functioning and operation. Vimuktha is a democratic federation. Having understood this basic philosophy of leadership and democracy, they conducted their leaders elected the Block level leaders, making them into the Chief Executive Body of the federation. Cluster Level Elections - The members of each cluster came together to elect their office bearers. The total members of clusters are about 130-150. The members from other clusters conducted the election. The cluster level leaders serve the federation for five years. Block Level Elections - The elected members of the clusters ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 15 come together to elect the office bearers of the Vimuktha Federation. The following designations are given to the elected members, President, Vice-President, Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer. These members will be the Executive Committee for the coming five years. They plan the whole programme of the federation, execute it and evaluate along with the members. ii. Children club & competition can pay their loan after they complete their education. This educational loan supported 70 students worth of Rs. 28,00,000 in the year 2013. The loan is given only to the children of the members of the federation. Thus, the federation has made an impact in the family and educational institutions. iv. Driving towards a success… The federation also organises the children into clubs. They have three clubs and the total number of members amount to 100. Children who are above class seven are admitted to the clubs. Various trainings are organised and these children are motivated towards a higher ambition in life amidst a challenging situations in the families. The best student award is given to the student who scores high in the public exams. They have opened a separate bank account in order to teach the children the idea of saving. The members of the childrens club participated in a mega completion organised for children in the city level in INFO Engineering college and won the overall championship by winning 13 first prizes, 10 second prizes and 4 third prizes. The event was organised on 9 February 2014 under the banner DAYA 2014. Forty seven children participated from the federation. It was an opportunity moment for the children to perform and prove their talents. Kudos to them! iii. Education loan The members of the federation also extend their work to their own children by supporting their children’s education. The members avail loans from the federation to pay the educational fees. They make an interest for the loan and it in turn becomes an income to the federation. Besides loan through Vimuktha, children were also linked through Canara bank loan for education. Children ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 16 Canara Bank is the pioneer in the Self Help Group finance. The efforts started way back in 2002 with Vimuktha Federation, when the bank initially financed for 10 SHG members. Since then bank has never turned back and has been supporting for over 10 years. With the continuous repayment of loan from the SHG members, this year the Federation has received Rs. 20,00,000 of credit loan from which 45 SHG members were benefited. Yet another support for Vimuktha Federation this year was, 5 SHG members are being provided with car loan worth of Rs. 22,00,000 for effective sale & marketing of their products. The enthusiastic entrepreneurs/group members are developing trade contact. Thanks to Mr. Ramesh Kumar, General Manager, Canara Bank, R.S. Puram, Coimbatore for supporting Vimuktha all the way for the downtrodden community. A JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND MILES BEGINS WITH A SINGLE STEP…. NMCT SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATION Native Medicare Charitable Trust (NMCT) celebrates the silver jubilee this year on 11th January 2014 at tribal village, Gopanai near Anaikatti, Coimbatore. Since the organization has initiated its activities with the tribals in Tholampalayam panchayat, it celebrated the Silver Jubilee in the tribal area Anakatti. There were around 750 participants consisting of tribal communities, people living with HIV, Children affected by HIV, trustees, stakeholders, philanthropists & well wishers were gathered in the ceremony. In this context the inaugural function proved to achieve its expectations by mobilizing key functionaries from government departments, ministries, funding organizations & technical experts. Over 750 tribals were provided with sarees, bed sheets, food materials, t-shirts, sweaters and tree saplings. Mrs. S. Seethalakshmi, Programme Manager of NMCT provided welcome address and followed by Mr. A.S. Sankaranarayanan, Managing Trustee, NMCT provided key note address. It needs special mention that former Minister, Mr. A.K. Selvaraj M.P was present to inaugurate the 25th Silver Jubilee Celebration. In his special address, he appreciated that NMCT had proven its success in identifying and intervening social development initiatives useful to marginalized and vulnerable segment of the poor people. He also expressed about the basic facilities like water & roads that he had implemented. Mr. Inigo Selvam, District Development Manager, NABARD, Coimbatore in his chief guest address had briefed about the NABARD’s tribal development (orchard farming) project & the importance of children bank account opening. He further narrated that NABARD is being supporting for tribals in Tholampalayam & Velliyankadu panchyats since 2011 and requested tribals to make use of the opportunity. It needs special mention that Mr. Veerapandi Vijayan, Chairman of Periyanayakanpalayam Panchayat Union was present during the inauguration ceremony and provided special address to the audience. Other chief dignitaries Mr. Muruganantham, CEO, Director of Extension, Arivu Thiru Koil, Aliyar, Pollachi, Ln. Paramasivam, Past Dist. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 17 Rojakootam Day Native Medicare Charitable Trust organized the 7th year “Rojakootam Celebration Day” on 9th May 2013 at Minnal Mahal, Pollachi. NMCT collected cash and also school notebooks, uniforms, school bags and other educational materials under “Join Hands Scheme” and distributed them to the poorest needy children of the HIV infected families on the Rojakootam Day. On the eve of the Rojakootam, NMCT released “souvenir” consisting of donor database of CaSPPollachi project. Deepawali Celebration NMCT celebrated Deepawali for the HIV/AIDS affected and vulnerable children on 3rd November 2013 at Tirupur Sewa Samiti, Vanjipalayam road, Tirupur. The programme is supported by Lions club of Tirupur Knit city, Tirupur Sewa Samithi and Youth Indian Trust. Lions club of Tirupur Knit City has made excellent arrangements in association with Tirupur Seva Samiti. Over 500 children of HIV affected families were provided with new dresses and sweets. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 18 Silver Jubilee & Pongalvizha Celebrations NMCT organized the Pongal Vizha on on 11th January 2014 at tribal village, Gopanai near Anaikatti, Coimbatore in association with Lion club of Tirupur Knit City, Lions club of Tirupur North, Lions club of Coimbatore Kurinji and Lions club of Anamalai. It was a great gesture that MJF Lion S. Paramasivam, District Governor contributed 340 sarees to the tribal women and T-shirts to 300 tribal men. Over 350 tribals were participated in the event. Give India organisation has been arranging funds through donors since 2009. This year NMCT applied to Give India to support nutrition food packets to 500 PLHIVs for CaSP project, Pollachi. Out of which Give India has approved for continuous nutrition food for 273 PLHIVs through Give India online donations. The support is for one year and it comes under the Monthly Donation Option of Give India. NMCT is a listed member of Give India, an online donation platform that allows people to support a cause of their choice. It has been a matter of great satisfaction that unfailingly, every month, the Besides above, funds received through Give India was spent for deserted women & providing care for HIV/AIDS infected/affected children. We are deeply grateful to GIVE INDIA foundation for their munificence.
