Tips & Tricks for Successful Completion of RSL Reflective Service-Learning, though technically a graduation requirement, is an exciting opportunity for Eckerd students. Prior to senior year, students participate in one or more approved RSL experiences, one of which must be academic. The combination of experiences must amount to a minimum of 40 hours. Beyond volunteering or community service, RSL emphasizes the connection between meaningful service and transformative learning. In order to make the most of your RSL experience, try the following tips and tricks! Plan ahead. Since the RSL program requires completion of an academic RSL course, it’s important to start early. During registration period, check to see which RSL courses are offered, that way you can locate a class of interest to you. If not, plan ahead, in case you need to develop an independent study. Choose organizations and issues that interest you. Take advantage of this opportunity to explore organizations of interest and issues of concern. Volunteering is an excellent way to get your foot in the door for a potential job or career. It’s also a great way to test the waters in varying lines of work to determine whether or not it’s a good fit. Submit co-curricular proposals in advance. Because co-curricular RSL proposals require approval from the Office Service-Learning, be sure to submit them in advance. In the event your proposal is rejected, you’ll appreciate the time to edit and resubmit, or to determine a different project. Treat your service like a professional job. Be present, communicative, and hardworking throughout your RSL experiences. Volunteer positions could turn into paid jobs after graduation. Your volunteer supervisor could also serve as a reference when you apply to future jobs or graduate. Also, keep in mind that your engagement with the community is helping you develop valuable real-world skills. Try to make the most of it. Carry your hours log with you. Be sure to bring your hours log each time you go to your service organization. This will ensure that you are keeping a correct track of hours for each visit. Meanwhile, having your supervisor sign-off after each visit will keep your log accurate and credible. Maintain a record of reflections. Upload reflections from Academic RSL courses into Triton Track- RSL, so they’re easily accessible for review during your senior year. Be thoughtful in your reflections. The more effort you put into reflections as you go along, for both academic and cocurricular RSL experiences, the easier it will be to write your summative reflection paper during your senior year. Use all provided resources. The Office of Service-Learning has many resources to assist you in completing your RSL requirement.
