WINNER BEST HOSPITALITY AWARD 2013 GIPPSLAND BUSINESS AWARDS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday 17th December 2014 Plans are underway for the 100 year centenary ANZAC celebrations in 2015 in Cowes thanks to a very dedicated working group with representatives from the Phillip Island RSL, National Vietnam Veterans Association, Newhaven College, Bass Coast Shire Council, Ambulance Victoria, and the Events Operations Group. Federal government funding has been sought to refurbish the 1930’s Cowes Cenotaph which will allow access from the Jetty Triangle via stairs to the memorial as well as other minor site improvements. The Working Group are eager to see as many local clubs, organisations and schools to become involved in activities as a lead up to ANZAC Day and throughout the year. The Art Society of Phillip Island is assisting with the co ordination of the visual and written arts components and welcomes expressions of interest from interested parties. Phillip Island RSL is offering a cash prize for each section – visual arts, photography and poetry. One of the major proposed events is to conduct a “Spirit of ANZAC” display at the Cowes Cultural Centre from 17th April to 26th April featuring visual arts, photographic, historic, literature, genealogy and memorabilia displays. Another project that the group is hoping to establish is to develop a “past heroes” ANZAC heritage trail around the region. This could become an actual heritage trail map which would identify not only who the people were who left our local community to serve in all the conflicts since 1915 but to identify which of these people have been laid to rest within which cemeteries. The Bass Coast Shire are also assisting other RSL’s in the region to locate missing Honorary boards which may have adorned public halls and buildings and which could be on display as part of the Centenary celebrations. Local schools will be provided with a Centenary of ANZAC program offering a range of activities which is hoped to form part of the displays at the Cowes Cultural Centre. On ANZAC Day (25th April), school children are invited to line Thompson Avenue representing their schools with colourful posters or banners to help cheer the marchers along. Local music director, Kirk Skinner is co ordinating the development of student choirs to perform on ANZAC Day. The aim is to have primary and secondary aged students from across the shire. Contact can be made via Newhaven College ANZAC Day 2015 services will be very similar to what was trialled earlier this year with both services being conducted from the Jetty Triangle followed by a Gunfire WINNER BEST HOSPITALITY AWARD 2013 GIPPSLAND BUSINESS AWARDS Breakfast on site. The Working Group is very interested to hear from members of the community who are willing to volunteer their time to assist in activities as a lead up to and on ANZAC Day itself. Volunteer roles include assistance at the Cowes Cultural Centre exhibition, ANZAC Day parade marshals and ANZAC Day event support.
