games planned. It will start at 6.30pm and all families are welcome. We will tell the
Cadets all about our exciting Sea Safety Poster Competition.
Bembridge Harbour
Malcolm Thorpe has kindly agreed to be at the Club on Wednesday 11th February at
1830 to speak about his plans for the Harbour during the coming year. The talk will
cover similar ground to the meeting held recently in Bembridge Village which many of
you were unable to attend as the date coincided with our Burns Night celebrations.

BHYC Members are invited to attend an evening of Scottish Dancing on 21st February
2015 starting at 6.00pm. All abilities welcome and there will be instruction to help
beginners and those who are a little rusty!
£6 dancing only. £16.50 to include a meal with a glass of wine/pint of beer at the
Pilot Boat afterwards.

book and arrange payment in advance. Dancing will be hosted by the Brading & St
Helens Conservative branch and a donation from the ticket sales will be made to the

A quick reminder that there is another Winter Workshop planned for Friday 27th
February at 19:30. This time we are covering Safety, Use of VHF, sending messages,

The allocation for Support has now been done and has been put on to Dutyman until the
end of the Icebreaker Series. Please then arrange your own swaps if you are unable to do
a particular day. If your duty either on Sceptre or Mitre in support of a race, please
report to the Race Officer for a briefing 45 minutes before Harbour Starts or 1 hour
before Committee Boat Starts.
If you find this impossible please send an e-mail to [email protected].

BHYC “WEEKLY NEWS”
Dutyman now has the Sailing Programme on it until August 2015. If you would like to offer
yourself to do certain duties please add your name to the system. In the Next few weeks
we will automatically be allocating people in for the up and coming Sailing programme. The
idea is to do this in Teams therefore allowing you to swap within the teams without
outside input. More details will follow via Dutyman.
Powerboat Level 2
A powerboat Level 2 Course is planned for the end of March. The dates are from 19:00 on
Friday 27th March through to 17:00 on Sunday 29th March. Anybody wishing to do this
course should contact [email protected] as soon as possible. This leads on to an RYA
Safety Course in April.
Ladies That Launch
Ladies that Launch at BHYC was set up to continue the enjoyment of sailing and progress
in gaining more sailing skills. It was started by three ladies on the Adult Beginners'
Course during Sail Training Week 2012. Ladies That Launch welcomes anyone from
a beginner, a budding improver or ladies that have done lots of sailing, there is always
something new to learn. LTL have joined in 'Come Sail With Us' and we have had training
sessions and workshops over the years. For more information please email [email protected]
Cruising Section - Our February walk is detailed below
Thanks again to Ian and Joy for checking that the walks should still be possible, despite
the recent wet weather. The Griffin Pub Menu follows the walk details.
We plan to meet in the Station Approach car park Wroxall (opposite to the Community
Centre) for a 10:00 start on Friday 6th Feb.
The walk is a 3.75 mile circular taking in the north escarpment of St Martins Down. We
leave the escarpment via a steep zig-zag path which has steps and guard rails but care will
need to be taken. The route then goes across open pasture to join the old railway track at
Upper Hyde (Shanklin). Finally we follow this recently upgraded track back to Wroxall.
For those who would prefer a non-muddy and flatter walk, they can take the Sunshine
Trail from Wroxall towards Shanklin to meet up with the walkers taking the above route.
At the end of the walk we shall drive to Godshill for lunch in The Griffin (situated
opposite to the main car park in the village.)
The Griffin will have their regular lunch menu choices but if 20 or more of us book a
carvery lunch we have been offered an excellent 2 course deal at £10
Hopefully enough walkers have asked for the carvery deal.
Happy Hiking,
Anne

BHYC “WEEKLY NEWS”
I am sure the excellent presentation about the Yarmouth Lymington Passage by Dr. Alan
Doe was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody who attended.
It was fascinating to see how
the vessels operating this route developed over the 150 or so years since the first ferry the Glascow - entered service in 1830 and was equally fascinating to learn that Alan’s
family were directly involved in operating this service from the beginning.
interesting presentation Alan, thank you very much.
A most
The next Talk on Tuesday the 17th of February is to be given by Mark Hickman about his
Edwardian sloop the Tarifa which many of us will have seen in the Harbour and I am sure
this will be yet another interesting Talk.
As usual the start time is 8pm, the Bar will be open from 6pm and Supper will be available
from 6pm until 7.30pm.
Pre-booking for Supper is required either by putting your name
on the list on the Club Notice Board or by ringing the Club on 872828.
Guests are
welcome but must be signed in.
Robin Powell.
Cadet Section
Poster Competition
We would like all BHYC Cadets to design a Sea Safety poster for the Club and bring it to
the next Cadet Night in March. The winner will see their poster printed and put up around
the Club. This is open to all Cadets.
The poster should be colourful, A3 in size, have information about Safety at Sea. This
could be what to wear, what to take with you, things to remember before you go sailing.
The poster should be clear to read. The closing date is the 4th March 2015 only one entry
per child and please write your name, age, email and contact number on the back of
the poster. Prizes will be given out in April.
Ladies’ Luncheons
Anyone interested in joining the coach outing to Poole and Brownsea Island in May should
bring a £10 deposit.
This May, several members of our committee will stand down. We urgently need to hear
from anyone willing to join the committee, which meets for an hour or so after each
monthly meeting. If you think you could take part, but are not too sure about it, we would
be happy for you to try a 'taster' meeting. Please let me know if you are interested.

Working Party - Thanks
Pleased to announce another successful working party, with thanks to the loyal band of
members who turned out in a biting wind to bring a few more improvements to the club
and its grounds. The Pico Store is now looking very smart and Robin is very proud of
it, the framework to the awning is once again white, armoured cable now extends to
the walkway leading to the Deep Water Pontoon (as a step toward lighting it) and the
infrastructure for the new signs to the car park has been erected. The signs will be
fixed this coming week and will display the club logo and point out that it is a private
car park - hopefully it will deter people like the BT truck driver caught by Peter
Hudson 'pulling doughnuts' around the central posts! Well done Peter and, yes we are
taking this further!
