November 2014 www.ogstonsc.co.uk (email address: [email protected]) www.facebook.com/ogstonsailingclub Commodores Comments Well Ogston, you did us proud!! 39 boats started and 37 boats completed the Barts Bash Race on 21st September, with a total of 49 sailors taking part, including 9 juniors, utterly brilliant to see. Thank you so much for making this happen. It was a fabulous, friendly, yet competitive atmosphere on the start line with some serious jostling for position going on. After one general recall the fleet were clean away on the second start (thank goodness) with a very lengthy first beat which really split out the pack. This was followed by classic Ogston shifts and occasional gusts. A real snakes and ladders race for many! The Barts Bash results from the event website are listed below for our club and can also be viewed on the official website where you can measure your performance against all the other 26,672 sailors who took part from all around the world. (I apologise for the fact that crews names are not included, I have recommended to the organisers that this should be changed to acknowledge all participants) The race at Ogston (and a bottle of Champagne) was won by Simon Law & Alastair Joyce in the Albacore, with Harry Briddon second in his Finn and Peter Tyers third in the Solo, well done guys. I would also like to thank the race and safety teams including our Independent Witnesses, Branko Karakusevic & Jonathan Morrell, and our steward and recorder, Sara Martin. Thanks also to Elizabeth and Louise Law for results and I’m sure many enjoyed the fabulous ‘Afternoon Tea’ and cakes in the clubhouse served by Mandy Rawson and Sue Briddon. As a club our fundraising total to date is £300 including the donations collected on the day. This was, in fact, race one of the Commodores’ Firkin event, which was followed by races 2 and 3. The wind picked up a bit for the second race and in memory of the late Harry Fisher, each sailor took a flower from the floral arrangement from Ogston Sailing Club which had rested upon the coffin at his funeral and cast it onto the water during or before the race. It was a pretty sight from retreat to see the white flowers floating on the water and a fitting tribute. The second race was won by Harry Briddon with Simon & Alastair second and Rod Shiers & Dave Marshall 3rd in the flying Fifteen Classic. Race 3 in the lessening breeze saw Russ Short, in his Enterprise, crewed by Jess Law come through for a win but the overall winner of the Commodore’s Firkin was Harry Briddon with Simon & Alastair second and Russ & Jess third. Well sailed all! I was away for the weekend of the Handicap Open, which also saw the club host the English Challenger Championship, sponsored by H.A.Briddon Builders, but I would like to congratulate all those who pulled together to make this a well organised and highly enjoyable weekend for both members and visitors to Ogston. I’m told that the Curry Night on the Friday was attended by 50 people and once again the Tyers Team put on a superb spread, highly praised by all. Dave Driffill and his team put a lot of work into the event and there is a race report elsewhere in this newsletter. Well done Dave & co! Our Annual Dinner Dance and prize giving is taking place on 21st November at the Derbyshire Hotel (j29, M1) this is always a great fun evening and an opportunity to get dressed up and realise how lovely everyone can look when they’re not wearing sailing gear! Look forward to seeing you there! This will be followed a week later by the AGM at the club, do please try to attend if at all possible. Look forward to seeing you. Julia Ward Commodore Vice Commodores Notes The sailing season is moving on and the nights are drawing in. Summer is finally over and judging by the wind and rain we’ve had this week, autumn is now upon us. The Wednesday night sailing finished a few weeks ago and we only have a couple of weeks left for Saturday racing. By the time this newsletter is published, the clocks will have gone back and we will be into the Frostbite series, with just 2 races each Sunday. But don’t despair – we carry on sailing all the way through to Christmas with the final day of the Frost bite series on 21st December and the Boxing Day Bash to finish off the year. So there’s no excuse to put your boats away yet! On the water: Sunday 21st September saw the Commodores Firkin held at the club. This year the event was combined with Bart’s Bash, a world record setting sailing event held with other clubs across the world. The day saw a total of 38 boats on the water at Ogston which was a superb turnout and it was a great atmosphere in the club. Congratulations go to Harry Briddon who won on the day as well as to all the members who took part. The weekend of 4th/5th October was the Handicap Open together with the English Challenger National Championships. A total of 28 boats competed during the weekend in what was a great event. The Handicap Open was very closely fought and was finally won on count back by Simon Law in the Albacore. The Challenger English Nationals was also close with the event being won by a single point by V Millward from Rutland Sailing Club. There should be a full report elsewhere on this event but I would like to thank all the members and helpers who made this event such a success. In the boat park: With the onset of the autumn winds, everyone needs to get up to the club and check that their boats are properly secured. All boats kept at the club must be tied down to ensure they do not get blown around if we have any stormy weather. An unsecured boat can do a lot of damage to the other member’s boats that are around it so please make sure it’s not your boat we’re talking about. Whether you are sailing or just coming up for a drink, I look forward to seeing as many members as possible at the club in the near future. Remember it’s your club and you need to keep using it. Briddon LTD Challenger English Nationals 2014 The 2014 Challenger English Nationals, sponsored by local builders H.A.Briddon, were held at Ogston Sailing club as part of their General Handicap Open on October 4th – 5th. This event is unusual because Challengers have a separate start but also score overall in the mixed fleet of Albacores, Flying Fifteens, Lasers and assorted other boats. Ogston favour a figure of eight course to make best use of the lake and the Race Officer sensibly used a small, open area near the dam in the light North West wind. Graham Hall led the fleet out of the start. Able-bodied Jack Alderdice was second, followed by locals David Driffill and Mick Brown. On the third lap Val Millward overhauled the others and was in touch with Graham. On the next lap, she chose left to Graham's right side of the beat and she had closed at least half the distance between them by the mark. In the next thirty seconds the fickle wind dropped, swirled and took it all back, ruining her chances of a win. At the finish, Graham was 200 yards ahead and had also beaten most of the general handicap fleet to come second overall. Val's form improved, winning the second race from Graham, with Event Organiser David Driffill, a consistent third. She also won the last race of Saturday by a big margin, with Hungary's Zoltan Pegan second, Graham third and Diana Faulks a close fourth. This left Millward the clear overnight leader, despite Graham Hall's apparent speed advantage. With the wind now South Easterly, the two Sunday races were run in front of the clubhouse with the start close to the bank. Hall's boat speed easily outpaced the fleet but Millward hung on, with Diana and Jack close behind. On the second lap a Solo and Laser were between Graham and Val coming into the last mark. Val, in a tough spot on the outside, was set to lose badly but the wind was kind and swirled at the mark, stalling the Laser and Solo so that Val and Graham came out together. Graham gained 100 yards on the beat, using lifts from the bank and, on the next lap, he did the same but Val went right into clear air, rounded the mark ahead and kept it to the finish. Val, Graham and Diana were close at the last start but Graham's boat speed gained a lead which he increased on lap 2 for a potential easy win. Again, Val went right and came out ahead at the first mark but, down the last leg, she faded. Graham's offwind speed rewarded him with another win and overall 6th General Handicap. Val Millward is the 2014 English Champion by one point (3rd overall General Handicap). Zoltan had a mixed event to come third and Jack, in his new boat, came a good forth. Silver fleet winner was Christine Spray, a Gold fleet candidate for 2015. Bronze was won by local pairing Callum and Mother Gill Bates. By Richard Johnson Challenger Class Chairman Challenger English Nationals 2014 What a Weekend. We had 52 people for the Friday 3 course meal at £5.00 per person and we still made a slight profit. Everybody enjoyed it. Thanks very much to Peter and Paula for the Friday night meal. On Saturday night Andrea did another great meal and again everybody enjoyed it, so thanks to Andrea for that. Sunday Morning we had bacon butties and Jess Law and Joy Mapp got up early and made them, so thanks to them. Sunday Lunch was made again by Andrea who had to juggle the food times as we were late finishing the last race, again thanks to Andrea. Nick MacLeod was the race officer for the weekend and set some great courses even though the wind was moving all over the place, so thanks to him and his helpers Karen and Martin Whittle, Safety Richard Dance, Andy Hart, James Hart, Howard Blunt, Keith Stone, Jill Dowell, Harry Pye all who did extra duties for the event, so thanks to them. Sara Martin and Louise Law completed the results so thanks to them. Simon Law Jess Law and Nat Smith for all the work on the Bar big thanks to all of them. John Swain who had to organise the beach, making sure everything went well there big thanks to John. There was Marilyn, Annie, Ben and Sue who came from Rutland Sailing Club to help out so a big thanks to them. We also had a large amount of Club members to help pull up the Challengers and launch them, so a big thanks to all the people who helped over the weekend. What a great event it was. We should note all the people who helped by doing extra duties, so shame on any members who have not done their 3 duties. We had 28 entries, some only did one day but 21 people qualified for the event. There is one other person I have to thank and its Simon Briddon of H.A. Briddon LTD for Sponsoring the Challenger English Nationals. Many thanks again to all who helped D Driffill Trophies Could all the holders of sailing trophies, please return them to the club as soon as possible. The club has fifty trophies and it takes quite a while to get them all engraved, ready for the prize giving at the Annual Dinner and Dance on November 21st.
