A desire to promote the sport of yachting… Message from the Commodore The last Semaphore article I wrote closed with my writing of the hope my fingers would soon be encrusted with epoxy and covered with bottom paint. I am happy to report that that wish has come true. Finally, I got to do some grinding, some glass work, some fairing…..lead, epoxy, fiberglass dust, the sweet smells of spring! I have also learned lead is quite malleable, and those North Channel bites in my keel will be filled with some custom hammered lead inserts, instead of airweight filler only. It was good too, to see some other fellow members and crews doing some boat work, in preparation for the rapidly approaching sailing season. Up in the triangle, Courtesan, Pendragon, Blitz, Legend, Thor, and I’m sure I missed a couple, were all getting attention. By the time you read this, I expect our harbor will have started filling up, and our fleet ready to rock. The North Harbor renovation, which consists of new decking throughout, and widening of the docks from well 201 to well 209 is just about complete. Vice Commodore Hanson Bratton led a group of BYC members to get this done. On behalf of the Club, a big ‘Thank You’, to all of you for your contribution to this improvement. While some of us were up here working on boats and docks, some of our other members were getting a jump start on the sailing season by sailing elsewhere. Com. Bayer, with a BYC crew of Com. Peter Griffin, Gov. Todd Jones, and Paul Hulsey, debuted the newest Grizzly at Charleston Race Week, finishing 28th. But wait, there were 75 boats on the starting line! So, for the first time out, not a bad result at all. It took Chuck 10 years to win the Beneteau 36.7 North American Championship, my guess is it will take him less than that to win in the J70 class. Also racing at CRW were Vice Com. Hanson Bratton, on Taz, with fellow BYC members Rear Com Karl Kuspa, Nancy Kuspa, Hans Brieden, Dave Bennett and Nicole Neely. Bora Gulari raced on Spookie, which won it’s class, and Tyler Black, on Decision which finished second to Spookie. Rounding out the top three spots in the HPR class was Bill McKinley’s Denale^2, with BYC members Dave LaMere and George ‘Bear’ Peet. Lance Smotherman raced his Melges 20 Details as well, with crew Alex Hume. Greg McCliment sailed on Gnarly Rucca, and Mark Steyn with Greg Semack raced Vapor Trail. And, helping out with the Race Committee were P/C Tim Rumptz, and Trish Smotherman. As you can see, Bayview sent a strong contingent to CRW, and I understand the gas powered blender Hummer party was a huge success. Also spending his time racing recently was Mike Rehe, who, crewing for Taylor Canfield, just won the Congressional Cup. This is a very significant accomplishment, congratulations to Mike Rehe and team Canfield. I believe this is the first time Bayview has had a member on a winning Congressional Cup team. Now, let’s see how you do on the Cal 25 in the BOD… Sailing…it’s what we do. We all know that, and along with the sailing come the camaraderie and social aspects of our support. You are all familiar with the traditional (and not so traditional) parties hosted at the Club. Most of you are also familiar with our most famous ‘off-site’ party, the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race awards party, held after our race, on the grounds of the Grand Hotel. We have another ‘off-site’ party you may not be aware of, the Acura Oasis, located in Port Huron, along the Black River, between the 7th and 10th street bridges, on the north shore of the river, not too far from the fire station, The Acura Oasis (or what is casually referred to as the ‘beer tent’) has evolved to be a significant party, both Thursday and Friday night before our race, and as part of the Blue Water Festival. Those of you who missed last year’s festivities missed some really good bands, a great crowd of April 2014 Events Schedule May~ 1 Summer Hours begin 1 Ladies Fashion Show 3 Bayview Jr Sailing Fitting Out Party 4 Etchell’s Race Series 10 Mackinac Race Committee Seminar 11 Mother’s Day Brunch 13 Mackinac Race Press Luncheon at Bayview 14 Mackinac Race Press Reception in Port Huron 15 Thursday Night Race 17-18Etchell’s Championship Regatta 17-18D-Cup Spring Invitational Qualifier 21 Board Meeting 22 Thursday Night Race 26 Memorial Day BBQ 29-6/1Bayview One-Design Regatta August~ Aug 16 Summer Party – Featuring e6 September~ Sept 27-28 National Sailing Hall of Fame mostly non-sailors who were anxious to talk with sailors about the race, and best of all, Larry Bell on drums, jamming with the band. Many of you who race are no longer partying like a rock star on Friday night before the race; those of you who do, please make it a point to visit the Acura Oasis. There will be plenty of Bell’s beer, Barefoot wine, and some great live music. Most of you who race are in Port Huron on Thursday, tending to last minute race preparation. May I suggest you head over to the Acura Oasis when you’re done, and view this as your night to get your party on; you’ll have all Friday to get rejuvenated before setting sail Saturday. You will have a great time, and another great Bayview party will be continued enhanced. The same great live music and vast amounts of Bell’s Beer and Barefoot wine will be available for your partying pleasure. So, while you’re under your boat this spring, making it perfect, add to your checklist of things to do to: register for the BOD, register for our Mac race; sponsor a new member; plan on attending all the great parties we’ve got planned for this year. Once your boat is in the water, take someone sailing who’s never been before; invite them to be your guest at one of our many fun events. This coming summer is going to be busy, with a lot of great events. Please take a moment to thank the event chair, the volunteers, the Club staff and management that have worked so hard to put these events together. Without them, we’d just be a building on the river; collectively, we are Bayview Yacht Club, and there is no better place to spend your summer. * And once again, we woke up to snow this morning….the ‘Polar Vortex’ set a new record for snowfall this year. See you on the starting line... Com. Tim Prophit Etchells Tune Up for World Championship Bayview Yacht Club’s Etchells fleet has a full schedule this spring, with an eye toward the 2014 Etchells World Championship June 22-28, 2014 in Newport, RI. Four Etchells from our fleet will be participating in the event. Former World Champions Bruce and Glenn Burton will be joined by boats skippered by Justin Palm, Doug Scheibner and Peter Shumaker in the 90+ boat fleet drawing boats from over a dozen countries. The Etchells schedule in Detroit begins Sunday May 4 with a windwardleeward series, followed by the Etchells Great Lakes Championship May 17-18 and the BOD May 30-June 1. After the World Championship and a break for the Mackinac Races, the Detroit fleet’s windward-leeward series continues on August 3, August 17 and September 14. If anyone is interested in participating in the Etchells fleet, several race-ready Etchells are available for charter or for sale this summer. Please contact Fleet Captain Jim Best at [email protected]. Mackinac Race Committee Chairman’s Report - April 2014 Having served in various functions as part of the Mackinac Race Committee between 1993 when I first helped the late Frank Kerwin coordinate the weather briefing and last year when I served as Carl Bielmeyer’s assistant I thought I knew a lot about the backroom operations necessary to make our race happen. Nevertheless, what I have found most interesting since assuming the chairman’s job is how many things I didn’t know about the behind the scenes part of the race preparations. Sailors who do the race perceive course selection and rating rules as a major part of the Committee’s duties and differences of opinion over those items tend to dominate talk over a Bell’s Amber Ale at the Bayview bar. But preparation of the Notice of Race listing the course(s) and rating rule(s) that will be used is a tiny fraction of the work that needs to get done. The truth is the race happens because a core set of volunteers and our club management spend countless hours attending to all of the details necessary to pull it off. There are a million little things that have to be done and someone has to do every one of them. To focus on just the start and “on the water” component of race preparations: • Who do you think assembles and inventories all of the anchor lines, inflatable marks, floating balls and other items necessary to segregate spectator boats from the starting area and set up the starting line itself? • Who do you think transports all of the above items from Bayview to Port Huron a few days before the race and stores them in the harbormaster’s shed? • Who do you think loads all of the above on a boat and goes out at 6 a.m. on the day of the race to set up the starting area? • Who do you think drives up to Southhampton, Ontario, a week before the race to attach the transponder, replace the battery and light and attend to any necessary maintenance of the Cove Island rounding mark? • Who do you think arranges for the starting line boat, the pin end boat, the mark set boat and the press boats? • Who do you think procures and transports all the food and beverages to feed 50 plus people manning the various RC boats at the start? • Who do you think mans the RC boats, handles the starting line timing, eyes the starting line for OCS boats, raises the signal flags, calls OCS boat sail numbers on the radio and gets all the boats off and running? The race chairman gets the credit (or the blame) for course selection and ratings but the race volunteers and club employees are the unsung heros who really make the race happen. But for the efforts of volunteers like Keith Ziegler, Com. Al Minsterman, Com. Jon Somes, Gordy Smith, Trish Smotherman, Brian Kieth, and dozens of other volunteers working with them the mighty ship “Mackinac Race” would be sunk before it even got started. ~ Arthur J. LeVasseur Note from Bayview’s Long Range Planning Committee Thank you to the Commodores, Board of Governors, and Club members who attended the Town Hall meeting Wednesday (April 16) evening. The input provided is encouraging for new ideas to emerge and final plans to be constructed in a contemplative manner. As most are aware, the Long Range Planning Committee proposed this past year that Club membership and usage will increase when sailing programs are vibrant. That concept spiraled through the Design Team to create the newly founded Sailing Council. Being aware of the multitude of topics the Sailing Council intends to address, the membership may be rest assured that many of the concerns presented are on the cusp of being executed. Albeit patience in the effectuation process will demonstrate to be worthwhile. The Long Range Planning Committee continues to take a strategic position to ensure that the long term concerns of the Club are being addressed. We are currently in the process of developing a system of continuity and sustainability in addressing those concerns. In addition, as debatable topics persist, broad input from the membership will allow a thoughtful study to occur in order to tackle complicated issues and ensure the Club and sailing will be better off for everyone in the future. As Bayview Yacht Club embarks on its next 100 years of success it is vital to recognize the impact that the numerous volunteers make in ensuring the Club remains essential to its membership and stays in alignment with the Club’s purpose of “the advancement of yachting and to provide recreation of its Members.” Halftime Report from the Treasurer: We are now halfway through our fiscal year, so I thought the membership would like a more comprehensive report. I would have liked to report that we are ahead of last year, but at the moment we are fractionally worse. However, I am optimistic that we will have made significant improvement by year-end. To date, we are approximately $25,000 worse off this year, than last. Before anyone gets unduly concerned, please remember that the first half of the fiscal year is the club’s slowest and worst performing from a balance sheet perspective. Since our fiscal year is September-to-September, Q3 and Q4 are much busier and financially successful for the club. There are a few items of note within the financials: • Total Revenues are 3% better on a year-over-year basis. • Total Expenses are 5.8% higher on a year-over-year basis. • Mackinac Expenses are $28,718 higher on a year-over-year basis. This is due to a hangover of $13,138 of last year’s actual expenses that were billed in October of 2013 after our books had been officially closed; also we have paid a portion ($22,550) of our Witz commission payments earlier this year than last. • Excluding Mackinac expenses, Total Expenses would be 3.3% higher. Variable Costs (under expenses) are up $51,995 or 25%. Much of this line item is “Outside Services” which include: •Increased fee from our auditors ($19,150 annually for audit and tax return) • $10,719 to repair a sewer during the polar vortex • $9,830 to print roster As you know our facility is getting older ever year, and this winter was especially harsh. During the “Polar Vortex” we had a sewer issue that was backing up raw sewage into the parking lot. It should be noted that Kerrie had come in that Saturday morning planning to work a couple of hours; due to the emergency she was at the club until 2am (missing her children’s sporting events). It is employees like Kerrie that make our club great - thank you. Total Club Operations ALL DEPARTMENTS Total Club Operations 1st QTR Totals 2nd QTR Totals Revenue The two funds of note are the Building Fund and the Capital Improvement Fund. Per our bylaws: A Building Fund shall be established for the purpose of improving Club facilities, and subject to restrictions herein, the fund shall be expended at the discretion of the Board of Governors and not under the control or direction of the Control Committee. The Control Committee which consists of five Active or Senior members, including the current Commodore and the immediate past Commodore control the Capital Improvement Fund. This Committee shall have the duty of controlling the Capital Improvement Fund, and monies shall be pledged, released, or committed to be released to the Board from such Improvement Fund only at the request of the Board for capital improvements, major repairs, and major emergencies and in amounts approved by the Control Committee. Any action taken by this Committee shall be approved by affirmative vote of three (3) or more of its members. A written report of all its actions shall be delivered to the Club Secretary and incorporated in the Club Records. The Committee shall make a report of its actions to the membership at each Annual Meeting. Before I go any further, it needs to be stressed that this is an attempt to stir productive conversation amongst the membership, and not meant as an attempt to criticize any Control Committee member past or present. The fact is that any member that serves on any committee within Bayview is doing so out of love and respect for the Club. I believe that the current Board of Governors and Control Committee are working well together for the good of Bayview. In theory, this means that if we aren’t spending that amount annually on Capital Expenditures the club is moving backwards. However, we only provide the BOG with the Building Fund’s $108,000 to pay for it. For the past 15-years we have been spending $275,000 towards CapEx annually; if we strip out extraordinary years we invest an average of $170,000 into CapEx per year. Much of this funding has been coming at the expense of the General Fund/Operations. continued on page 5 From the Board Room Fourth Edition D Cup – The D Cup budget has been approved. Many thanks to Regatta Chairman, Gary Shoemaker for going the extra mile to get things streamlined for 2014. The Van Tol family also stepped up to make sure this year’s event will be the best yet. U20 Fleet – In order to make sure our fleet is in perfect condition for the D Cup we have approved the purchase of new jibs for the boats. We are also looking for another boat to purchase and there are some things being worked on for the donation of U20’s by Members. The goal is to get to a total of eleven boats so we can hold US Sailing caliber events with a break down boat. Peter Wenzler is doing a great job and the Adult Learn to Sail program will be very successful this year adding new sailors and Members to the club. Approved Events – The Etchells are bringing their Great Lakes Championship to the club next month on the 17th and 18th of May. The WaHa (Warren and Harold (Burt) Jones) Regatta has been scheduled for June 22nd. The Commodore John S. Barbour Memorial Regatta will be held September 7th. Membership – We are currently about 70 Active Members short of full membership. We are still running the Dinner for Two promotion. As a primary sponsor to a “NEW” Active or Intermediate Member, you and your newly approved Member will receive a dinner for two compliments of the Board of Governors. There is nothing more important or satisfying than sharing Bayview Membership with friends and acquaintances that you know will enhance the traditions of Bayview through mutual interest of sailing and fellowship. As you know, Bayview Membership offers a very unique experience to those that share our passion for sailing and camaraderie. Take the time to consider who you know that would be a good fit with our Club. Contact Membership Chairman, Brad Kimmel, cell phone number 248-388-3581 or you can email him at [email protected] and he will assist you in the application process. Want to Win One of These? This years Bayview One Design Regatta, May 30th to June 1st, is shaping up to the biggest best yet. We are expecting over two hundred entries in 16 separate classes. As in past years we are seeing strong registration numbers in the Cal 25, Lightning, Beneteau 36.7, Melges 24 and Tartan 10 classes. This year, however, we are excited to see increased interest in a few other classes such as Star, Catalina 27, International Etchells and S2 7.9 and 9.1’s. There are two more J120’s rounding out an already fantastic fleet and there is even some talk about a new Club 420 fleet that might join the river circle. If you have not already registered please jump on line today and get your on-line entry complete before the deadline. Our Entertainment Team of Blay Schoenherr and Michael Cytacki have been working hard to ensure that BYC does not loose its reputation for having World Class Parties. Back this year by popular demand we have lined up two bands that are always a crowd favorite. Good Gravy on Friday night followed by the Hogans the next. These two bands always put on a good show and keep the tent rock’n well into the evening. Also back by popular demand we are having the Moth Grand Prix taking place on the Detroit River on Friday and Saturday evenings right out in front of the club so even if you are not planning on sailing please bring your family and friends down to what is sure to be the best BYC party of the year. We always want to thank our 2014 Bayview One Design sponsors for all of their support: Acura, Bells Beer, Mount Gay Rum, Soaring Eagle Casino, North Sails Barefoot Wine, Line Honors, Kuspa Yacht Services, Interactive Creations and Pure Eco. Halftime Report from the Treasurer: continued from page 3 Funding Source for the Past 15 Years of Capital Expenditures From Operations, $2,206,778 From Building Fund, $1,420,502 From Control Cmte Fund, $536,653 The Control Committee has Funded ~ 13% of Capital Expenditures in the past 15 Years Fiscal Year End Fund Balances 900,000 800,000 700,000 600,000 500,000 Building Fund 400,000 CC Fund Opera0ons 300,000 As you can see the Control Committee has paid approximately 13% of all CapEx over the past 15-years. Over the past six years we have seen the Capital Improvement Fund double in size from less than $400,000 to over $800,000. During this time the Building Fund has stayed flat, and the General Fund’s assets have declined. One of my goals for this year is to work with the Control Committee and try to develop a logic for the size and scope of the Capital Improvement Fund. At the last Annual Meeting Commodore Pappas made a compelling argument that virtually any CapEx expense should come from the Control Committee rather than the General Fund, and taking from the General Fund could ultimately lead to a dues increase. In response, past Control Committee Chairman Paul Falcone made an equally compelling argument that Capital Improvement Funds should be used in the case of emergency or rainy day. I thought both individual made sound arguments; I think the best solution is likely somewhere in between. Some members believe the existing $800,000+ in the Capital Improvement Fund is far too high, other members believe we should have $1,000,000-$2,000,000 in the fund at all times. Rather than pick an abstract number I hope we can somehow come up with road map to recognize the potential emergency costs that may arise and reserve appropriately for them. I have been assured that we carry an appropriate amount of insurance for the physical plant of the club in case of catastrophe. I would like to quantify the other potential expenses and apply an inflation adjustment to them so that the structure could be valid for years to come. Clearly all past members of the Control Committee have had the Club’s best interests at heart, but there has been some differing of opinions of what is a worthy expense. 200,000 Respectfully, 100,000 Paul I.
