The council group is looking at ways to greatly improve on what’s here now. This includes turning part of lower Queen Street into a civic plaza and
selling the existing Queen Elizabeth Square - in front of the Downtown Shopping Centre - to develop new, high-quality spaces on the waterfront.
Last year, we asked Aucklanders what they would like to see and do in new spaces downtown. The most popular options were:
Environment and setting
Community, Arts,
Culture and Heritage
Hospitality and retail
Recreation activities
Harbour views
Spaces that are fun and quirky
Eat or drink at café and restaurant tables
Areas to walk and/or run
Sunny, open spaces
Public gatherings, demonstrations, events,
performances and celebrations
Picnic at freely available eating spaces
Playspace for children in either a natural area
or a purpose-built playground
Places to sit
Heritage and character
Local markets and food stalls
An urban beach or pool to swim
or paddle
Steps into the water
Art displays
