• Operating 1924 - 1953
• First high school in the county
for African American students
• Transitions into the Stephen J.
Ellis Elementary School in 1953
when the Carter G. Woodson
High School opened
• The Training School property
is now being converted into a
memorial park

SCHOOL
• Opened in 1953 for African
Americans
• Was on the current primary
and elementary school site
• The legacy is carried on in the
title of the current primary
and elementary school – which
is known as the Carter G.
Woodson Education Complex.
Carter G. Woodson (1875 - 1950) who
was born in Buckingham County and
considered the “father of black history”
