Aim
To practise survival phrases
Task
To make sentences and questions from single words and phrases
Activity type
Pair work
Preparation
1 Make one copy of the worksheet for each pair of students.
2 Cut up the word cards and put each set in an envelope.
Timing
30 minutes
Procedure
1 Remind students that in Unit 1 they have learned a number of survival phrases to help them to use
English as much as possible in the lessons, even if they don’t understand something.
2 Ask students to work with a partner and give each pair an envelope with the cut-up sentences.
3 Tell students that the words and phrases on the cards make up a number of survival phrases. Ask them
to form as many sentences as they can with the cards, completing the sentences where necessary
(indicated by “…”).
4 Check the sentences in open class.
5 Ask students to work in pairs again and make up dialogues using the sentences. Tell them to make
small changes or add some sentences of their own – in English or in German. Refer to the cartoon on
page 9 of First Choice Starter as an example.
