Teacher’s notes
Aim
Activity type
To talk about past events
Pairwork
To practise statements and questions in the
simple past
Preparation
1 Make one copy of the worksheet for each pair
of students.
To practise expressions of time
Task
To make up some interesting information about
a famous person
2 Make your own list of famous people you
think everyone in the class will know to use if
students lack ideas.
Timing
To guess the identity of a famous person
40 minutes
Procedure
1
Draw the following table on the board.
this morning
yesterday
two days ago
last week
five years ago
2
Ask students to imagine that this refers to the life of someone famous. Ask students to suggest a
famous person.
3
Choose one person and write the name on the board.
4
Ask the class to imagine what this person did at the times mentioned in the table. Write the ideas in the
“diary”.
5
You might like to use the information on the board to drill asking and answering questions.
6
Give each pair of students a worksheet and ask them to think of a famous person. The information they
are going to write down is from this person’s life. Stress that they do not need detailed knowledge, but
that the information should reflect what the person might do. If anyone cannot come up with a name,
help out with a suggestion from your list. The names should be kept secret from the rest of the class.
7
In pairs, students answer the questions on the worksheet in any way they like.
8
In open class, students ask and answer the questions from the worksheet to try to guess the identity of
the people.
Variation
Instead of writing about famous people, students could choose other members of the class to write about.
