Challenges and Choices: The Presidential Election and
Its Significance for German-American Relations
The outcome of the American presidential campaign remains unpredictable. However,
the central questions concerning foreign policy directions in a new administration are:
How and where will the US choose to project power and principle in a turbulent world,
and what will the expectations of a new president be in dealing with the transatlantic
partnership?
Jackson Janes is the President of the American Institute
for Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins
University. One of the leading American experts on
German politics and transatlantic relations, he is a
member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the
Atlantic Council, and the board of the German-American Fulbright Commission. He was awarded the
Officer’s Cross of the German Order of Merit in 2005.
To mark the lecture series’ opening event, there will be
a welcome address by U.S. Consul General Michael R.
Keller, as well as a reception following Dr. Janes’ talk.
