Journalistin SAL Methods of Teaching and Learning lecture and conversation in class, partner/group work, individual work, role play Main Goals This course is designed for exchange students of the FHS who have little or no previous knowledge of German. The course aims to provide you with a basic knowledge of German in order to enable you to find your way in a German-speaking environment and to make your stay in St. Gallen a success. The course covers the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing on a basic level. Focus will be on communicative skills as well as on grammatical structures and vocabulary. Topics include everyday’s life and issues. Referring to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) this course offers the necessary basis leading to Level A1.1. Learning Objectives (Competencies) Professional Competencies: Participants can • understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type (A1) • introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has (A1) • interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help (A1) Self-Competencies: Participants can • improve her/his self-studying skills • identify and correct her/his language skill deficits Topics covered Social Competencies: Participants can • work and learn in an intercultural team • adapt oneselves in a foreign culture and language environment Block I: «Willkommen» (Welcome) • presentation and introducing people (origin country and name) • an international German class • hello and goodbye • numbers 0–20 grammar: w-words, yes- and no-questions, conjugation, mein(e) Block II: «Die Schweiz» (Switzerland) • geographie (Switzerland, neighbouring countries) • numbers 20–100 / 100–1'000'000'000 • alphabet grammar: capital letters, nouns – verbs – adjectives Block III: «Leute in der Schweiz» (people in Switzerland) • informations about a person (name, job, city, language skills ...) • the thime (opening times, departure of trains/busses) • work and jobs grammar: personal pronouns and verbs, conjugation Block IV: «Leben und arbeiten in der Schweiz» (live + work in CH) • money • food • shopping • colours grammar: jobs, nationalities, prepositions Prerequisites: No requirements are necessary.
