Poetry is one of the oldest and most important of the arts developed by human beings to explore and express their experience of life. British poetry has a particularly rich poetic tradition, and so we will study poems drawn from its long history, ranging from traditional poetry to modern song lyrics. Each week we will read poems or songs that are loved by British people, and then discuss them together in English. In addition, we will also study one or more British films. Studying poems, songs and films will improve your listening and reading comprehension skills, while our group discussion will give you a chance to practice and enhance your English communication skills. We begin each class with an open session, during which class members can ask any questions they like – about English, British culture, current news, anything at all. I also encourage students to ask questions at any time during the class. As well as an opportunity to learn more about British culture, literature, music and film, joining this class is also an excellent way of meeting interesting people who are keen to discuss ideas and issues in English.
