「 Environmental Destruction 」１−１Columbia チーム（１班） Hello everyone. We are Takasaki Young Men’s High School students and we are the Columbia Team. We will talk about “Environmental Destruction.” Environmental Destruction is a serious problem, because if it continues, we will not be able to live on the earth in the future. We will look at 3 topics. Global warning, Desertification and The Destruction of the ozone layer. Let’s look at “Global warming.” It summer was too hot last summer. Of course summer is hot, but recent heat is abnormal, isn’t it? Why? Because of “Global warming.” What will happen, if it will be running? At first, temperature will gradually go up and ices on the ocean will melt away, so that the sea level will rise. As a result, there will be islands which may sink under the sea. In addition, ecosystem will change. Other effects will happen. As a result, humans may die out some day! But we have some chances of not dying out. Therefore, we must strive harder to stop “Global warming.” Fortunately, there are many ways to stop “Global warming.” For instance, we can save us electricity and try to reduce wastes. The future of the earth depends on each of us. In addition, we must think about “Global Warming” much more. And it is a really important for all mankind to solve “Global warming.” Let’s move to “Desertification”. About six million hectares of ground change into desert in the world every year. It is as large as Kyushu and Sikoku in Japan. These are a lot of deserts in the world, such as the Sahara Desert and the Gobi Desert. Now, these deserts are extending desertification to all over the world. In the world, deserts are three thousand and six hundred million hectares. One quarter of the earth is the desert. The reasons of desertification are the weather and human. But we don’t think about it carefully. Our environment makes the earth. So, we must be in harmony with all life living on the earth. We must think about “Desertification.” Let’s focus on 3,”Destruction of the ozone layer” The earth is covered with the ozone layer. It protects lives from Ultra Violet. But now the ozone is being broken. In other worlds, it’s called Ozone Hole. Sometimes, it extends to Australia. A part of Australian students have to wear sun-glasses as their costume. Where is the Ozone Hole? The Ozone Hole exists in the North and South Pole. Especially, the Ozone Hole above the Antarctica is serious. Why is the Ozone broken? It’s because we are using Freon. And we should save using jet planes for the future. Today we talked about Environmental Destruction, and we looked at Global warning, Desertification and Destruction of the ozone hole. Environmental destruction is very serious, because if it continues, we will not be able to live on the earth in the future. What does this mean? We think that it is a very serious message from the damaged earth to change our way of thinking. So we should have the attitude, Mottainai. This attitude means to reduce waste. For example, air−conditioner and heaters discharge CO2 into the air and weaken your power of defense against temperature’s change. So Mottainai must be useful to solve Environmental Destruction and to keep us in good health. Chance is only now. Lastly, the three topics we picked up today is a mere part of all Environmental Destructions. There are many problems which have not been solved yet besides the three. They might not be close for us. But it is the fact that people are suffering from them somewhere in the world. Mother Teresa said, ”The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference.” Now, the action we should do is to have an interest about environmental destruction. Thank you. 「環境破壊について」１−１Columbia チーム（１班）＜日本語訳＞みなさん、こんにちは。私たちは高崎高校のコロンビアチームです。私たちは環境破壊について話します。環境問題は深刻な問題である。なぜなら、もしこのまま続けば、私たちは将来地球に暮らすことができなくなるからである。私たちは地球温暖化、砂漠化、オゾン層の破壊について話します。昨年の夏はとても暑かった。もちろん、夏は暑いものだ。しかし、最近の暑さは異常ではないだろうか。なぜだろうか。それは地球温暖化のためである。もし地球温暖化が進行したら一体起こるだろう。一つ目に、気温が徐々に上昇し、海上の氷が溶けると考えられる。そして、海面が上昇する。海に沈んでしまうかもしれない島も存在している。二つ目は、生態系の変化である。その結果、人類はいつか絶滅してしまうかもしれないのだ。しかし、人類はそうならない可能性も持っている。常に私たちはより真剣に努力しなければならない。地球温暖化を止める方法は多くある。例としては、私たちは電気を節約したり、ごみを再利用したりなどができる。地球の運命は、私たち一人一人にかかっているのだ。さらに、私たちは地球温暖化について、もっと考えなければならない。そして、それが全人類にとって、地球温暖化を解決するために、本当に大事なことである、そう私たちは考える。毎年世界で約６００万ヘクタールの土地が砂漠に変わっている。それは、日本の九州と四国を合わせた広さと同じだ。世界には多くの砂漠がある。例えば、サハラ砂漠、ゴビ砂漠などだ。今、これらの砂漠が世界中の砂漠化を広めている。世界には、砂漠が約３６億ヘクタールある。地球の４分の１が砂漠だ。砂漠化の理由は気候、そして人間である。しかし、私たちはそれについて深く考えていない。私たちの環境は地球を作っている。だから、私たちは地球に住んでいる全ての生命と共存しなければならない。私たちは砂漠化について考えるべきだ。この地球はオゾンによって覆われていて、生命は紫外線から守ってくれる。しかし、いまオゾン層が壊れている。つまり、それこそがオゾンホールである。ときどき、このオゾンホールはオーストラリア大陸までせり出してくる。オーストラリアの学生の一部はサングラスを制服として着用しなければならない。どこにオゾンホールはあるのだろうか？オゾンホールは極地に存在する。特に、南極上空は深刻な状況だ。では、なぜオゾン層が壊れるのか？それは、我々人類がフロンガスかジェット機を使っているからである。だから、我々は未来のためにフロンガスを使用してはいけない。そして、ジェット機の使用を節約するべきである。今日私たちは地球温暖化、砂漠化、オゾン層の破壊について話した。将来私たちが地球で生きる事ができなくなるので、環境問題はとても重要である。これは何を意味するのだろう。それは私たちの考え方を変えるための地球からのとても深刻なメッセージだと思う。だから、私たちはある精神を持つべきなのである。それは、「もったいない」。この精神は無駄を減らすことを意味する。例えば、エアコンや暖房器具は大気中に二酸化炭素を排出し、温度の変化に対しての抵抗力を弱らせる。故にもったいないは環境問題の解決や私たちの健康を保持するために役に立つに違いない。最後に今日私たちが取り上げた３つのトピックはすべての環境問題のほんの一部である。この３つの他にもまだ解決されていないたくさんの問題がある。それらは私たちに身近ではないかもしれない。しかし、世界のどこかでそれらによって苦しめられている人々がいるのは事実である。マザー・テレサは「愛の反対は憎しみではなく、無関心である」と言った。今、私たちがすべき行動は環境問題について興味をもつことである。もし環境問題についてより多くのことを知りたいのであれば、私たちは環境省のホームページにアクセスすることを提案する。たくさんの貴重で興味深い情報がたくさんある。ありがとうございました。メンバー：植松祐仁、黒澤亮人、反町将之平井直樹、吉田拓
