If you think slavery---human
bondage---is a thing of the past,
think again. In 2015, slavery,
including generational slavery,
continues its sordid existence
around the world. The United
Nations estimates that more than
30 million men, women and children are trapped in this blight on
humanity 365 days a year.
In sheer numbers, India is
unmatched with more than 14 million people waking each day as
indentured as they might have
been in biblical times. But no
country has more of its citizens
enslaved than Mauritania, a West
African nation of four million,
where one in every 25 people will
be born and, one day, die in the
same hopeless existence.
Slavery, which includes children as young as five, occurs in
India’s embroidery mills, Ivory
Coast’s chocolate plantations and
almost every nation where diamonds are mined.
The most recent UN count
estimates that nearly 170 nations--on every continent---have slave

Denver’s Municipal Elections
Of Denver’s 660,000 residents,
433,000 registered to vote in the
last municipal election of 2011 and
124,000 actually voted. That means
that in the last city election, less
than 19 percent of Denverites decided city leaders including the Mayor
and members of City Council.
As with every four years, in
this municipal, non-partisan election, Denver voters will be asked to

select representatives in an off-year
election - that is, between the years of state and national
elections and held the first Tuesday of May as opposed to
the first Tuesday of November. Each elected office is for a
four-year term and three successive terms are allowed. If
no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the total vote,
the top two vote getters go to a runoff on June 2nd. The
exception to this procedure is the selection of At-large City
Council representatives who represent the entire city, where
the two candidates receiving the most votes in May will be
declared the winners.
Historically, incumbents have a decided edge for reelection, though some challengers this year will make a
couple City Council districts competitive. Along with some
redrawn districts and open seats without an incumbent and
the City Council races could keep the election on May 5th
interesting.
The future of our city is at stake so celebrate this Cinco
de Mayo by voting!
Mayor
Incumbent Mayor Michael Hancock has been insulating
himself from challengers since he was elected in 2011 and
has raised over $1.2M. Challenged by three other candidates
without any reported fundraising last month – Seku, Paul
Fiorino, and Marcus Giavanni, Hancock will easily be reelected.
Auditor
City Council District 7 representative, Chris Nevitt, narrowed the field early and is challenged by Certified Public
Accountant, Tim O’Brien, who has over a decade of state
audit experience. Nevitt has the support of most of the
Denver political structure and should be elected.
Clerk and Recorder
Current Clerk and Recorder, Debra Johnson faces off
against Joan Poston for the office. Both the fundraising and
endorsement momentum is with the incumbent. Well-run
elections, a proactive stance on issuing marriage licenses
and good customer service over the last four years will send
Johnson to victory.
City Council At-Large
Two incumbents with substantial financial and political
backing are likely to win new terms in May. Debbie Ortega
was one of the candidates receiving the most votes in the
entire election of 2011 and given her previous City Council
experience serving northwest Denver, she is a voter favorite
for an At-large seat. She has been particularly supported by
labor and for her attempt to ban plastic bags in Denver.
Robin Kniech is the first out member of the Denver City
Council and has broad support across Denver. Along with
substantial fundraising, she should ride Denver’s growth
success to a second term.
Jose Silva, Jeffery Washington, and Kayvan Khalatbari
all have pockets of support throughout the city and enough
fundraising to make some noise, but not enough to overcome the incumbency advantage.
District 1
The most contested district for an incumbent, Susan
Shepard faces criticism over some of the development in
District 1. Challenger and architect, Rafael Espinoza, is rallying long-time Northside residents and grassroots supporters
but lags in fundraising. This one will be interesting to watch.
District 2
In this open seat, the fundraising advantage is with
former Rocky Mountain News Reporter, Kevin Flynn, but
fundraising and endorsement momentum is moving the
direction of former State Representative, Fran Coleman. Has
Flynn needled too many public servants in his reporting? I
predict a spirited runoff between these two.
Former State Representative, Jeanne Labuda, knows
the district well but hasn’t gained expected traction. If she
doesn’t make the runoff, her support of another candidate
could help substantially.
Entrepreneur, John Kidd, should attract the conservative and Republican voters in the district, which is larger
than many districts in Denver. Kidd has been endorsed by
current Councilwoman, Jeanne Faatz.
Perennial candidate and City of Denver employee,
Danny Lopez, has substantial campaign experience but not
enough support to get it done in this election.
District 3
Incumbent Paul Lopez is running unopposed and is riding on recent success with a new district park and improved
city services. How about that Cesar Chavez Boulevard this
term, Councilman?
District 4
Southeast Denver native Kendra Black leads in fundraising and is endorsed by outgoing Councilwoman, Peggy
Lehmann. However, strategic planner, Halisi Vinson has
put in a valiant effort that has also attracted an impressive
set of endorsements including the often-enviable support
of former Mayor, Wellington Webb and other current office
holders.
Webb announced his endorsement saying Vinson will
fight for parks and against parkland sale or swaps in southeast Denver where a Denver Public School elementary is
currently being built.
One of the best parts of this race has been the presence
of third candidate, Carolina Klein. At an early debate given
the chance to question other candidates, she asked if they
had any tattoos. They didn’t.
This one goes to a runoff between Black and Vinson.
District 5
Incumbent Mary Beth Susman is unopposed.
District 6
Washington Park and the development of her adjacent
neighborhoods is at the center of this head to head campaign
pitting former legislative staffer Liz Adams against former
Washington Park Profile newspaper owner, Paul Kashmann.
While Adams has the support of term limited Councilman,
Charlie Brown, Kashmann holds the endorsements of former
Mayors Webb and Peña. Adams has a substantial fundraising
lead but Kashmann has brought in enough to keep this race
competitive. Direct connection with voters may determine
the winner on May 5th.
District 7
While outgoing Councilman Chris Nevitt cruises to
victory as City Auditor, nine candidates are vying for the
open seat. This district race features the greatest number of
candidates and the most total money raised.
The top tier in both fundraising and endorsements is
occupied by former Congressman Perlmutter staffer, Aaron
Greco, former State Representative, Anne McGihon, and
Greenway Foundation operator, Jolon Clark. McGihon enjoys
distinction as the only candidate with elected experience but
hasn’t connected with younger voters in a changing district
as much as Greco and Clark have been able to do.
But two other candidates should not be counted out at
this point. Mickki Langston has performed exceptionally
well in debates and offers a fresh perspective for small business and Luchia Brown is drawing on her Baker neighborhood experience to become the neighborhood candidate.
They are joined by the only two candidates living on the
west side of the district, Ian Harwick and Mateos Alvarez.
Jake Viano is the only Republican in the race and Michael
Levy is not accepting donations, instead encouraging voters
to give to their local school.
At one point thought to be Anne McGihon’s to lose, five
candidates have a reasonable chance to make the runoff.
After that, it’s a whole new game.
District 8
City Council President Chris Herndon is unopposed in
this newly drawn district.
District 9
Incumbent Albus Brooks is opposed by Ean Tafoya and
Michael Borcherding in this new district. With substantial
fundraising and the political establishment behind him,
Brooks will have to adjust to a new constituency that takes
him further west to a region previously represented by
Councilwoman, Judy Montero.
District 10
With City Planner, Anna Jones and retired healthcare
administrator, Wayne New designated as frontrunners, fundraising and endorsements went their direction early in
the race. However, a recent surge by political staffer, Travis
Leiker has made District 10 a three-way horserace.
In an independently minded district, will the endorsements of State Representative Paul Rosenthal and outgoing
Councilmember, Jeanne Robb help Anna Jones? Will the
support of Cherry Creek North, where he served as neighborhood president, propel Wayne New?
My money is on Travis Leiker to solidify the LGBT community and call in political chits to make the runoff against
one of the other two top candidates.
Chris Chiari and Chris Wedor have held their own in
debates and in fundraising but it may not be enough to
bridge the momentum gap between the top three candidates.
District 11
The growth of far northeast Denver has caused
Councilman Chris Herndon’s district to shift west and left
this new District 11 as an open seat.
While education reformer, Sean Bradley and nonprofit
head, Stacie Gilmore have a substantial edge in fundraising, airport staffer Tea Schook has stayed competitive in
marshalling resources. Nonprofit psychologist, Shelli Brown
has stayed with Schook in the second tier of fundraising in
this race.
Backed by former Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar,
Stacie Gilmore is going head to head with Sean Bradley who
is supported by State Representatives, Crisanta Duran and
Jovan Melton.
Tea Schook will have to draw on decades of involvement
in LGBT and Democratic political issues to gain resources
and endorsements to keep this race competitive. Though not
as numerous or high profile, Shelli Brown has been able to
list some impressive endorsements.
Tim Camarillo hasn’t been able to gain traction and did
not report any fundraising last month.
Bradley, Gilmore and Schook are realistic runoff candidates.

center

Denver Health broke ground on Thursday, Apr. 2 on the
Southwest Family Health & Urgent Care Center. Scheduled
to open in 2016, the new 45,000 square foot clinic will feature the first Urgent Care location outside Denver Health’s
main campus, along with primary care for patients of all
ages, a full service pharmacy and health insurance enrollment services.
Denver B-cycle: “Bike to the Game
Sundays”
Throughout the season, the Colorado Rockies have
designated Sunday home games this season as “Games of
Green.” In an effort to decrease traffic for game days, Denver
B-cycle is offering a $2 discount off a 24-hour Access Pass

New ballot design
The Denver Elections Division will debut a new ballot
style for the May 5 General Municipal Election. Voters will
now fill in a bubble next to the name of their candidate of
choice instead of connecting a broken arrow.
“Even though we’ve been recognized in the past for our
ballot design, we continue to look for ways to make the voting process easier for our voters,” said Director of Elections
Amber McReynolds. “This new design will be more familiar
to anyone who has ever filled in the ovals when completing
a form or taking a standardized test.”
Ballots will be mailed the week of April 13.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal Visitor
Center dedicated
U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (CO-01), Reps. Ed Perlmutter
(CO-07) and Jared Polis (CO-02) as well as leaders of Adams
County, Commerce City, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service unveiled the newly named Pat Schroeder Visitor
Center of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife
Refuge on Wednesday, Apr. 8. The naming ceremony took
place in honor of former Colorado Congresswoman Pat
Schroeder, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives
for 24 years from 1973 to 1997.
Rep. Schroeder was a strong advocate for the environment. Her district included the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, and
she was instrumental in getting its clean-up started. She
then introduced legislation to establish it as a wildlife refuge
in 1991, which passed in 1992. It is considered a key accomplishment for the area during her time in office.
Adams State names new president

and Panama last week, from April 8-11. President Obama met

through the administration’s Caribbean Energy Security
Initiative. He made a spontaneous stop at the Bob Marley
Museum in Kingston as well. The President then travelled
to Panama where he participated with 34 other leaders in
the Seventh Summit of the Americas. While in Panama,
President Obama held a bilateral meeting with Panamanian
President Juan Carlos Varela, and met with leaders from the
Central American Integration System (SICA).

Obama met with Cuban leader Raul Castro.
Obama travelled to Panama to speak to the
leader face to face. The meeting signifies
the first time the two leaders have since
agreeing to renew diplomatic relations.
Obama is expected to announce that he is
removing Cuba from the United States’ list
of countries that sponsor terrorism following the meeting.
North Korea demands ship from
Mexico: Mexico has been accused of illegally holding one of North Korea’s cargo ships.
The communist country has demanded that
the ship and crew be returned. The ship was

affected most by the floods, while Tarapaca,
Antofagasta and Coquimbo have also been
struck.

Iranian guards killed: Militant group
Jaish al Adal has killed eight Iranian border
guards. The guards were fighting with the
militants near the border with Pakistan.
Three militants were also killed by Iranian
forces. The militant group is an anti-Iranian
group. The group is believed to be based in
Balochistan, a Pakistani province.
North America
Body parts found inside duffel bag:
Carlos Colina is facing murder charges in
Massachusetts after human remains were
found in a duffel bag. The 32-year-old man
recently had his bail revoked for another
assault and battery case in which he was
involved. The body parts in the bag are
believed to be the remains of 26-year-old
Jonathan Camilien. According to authorities,
the two men knew each other.

UNC Mexican-American Studies at a crossroad
After my military service I came
home to continue
what I had started
at the University
of Maryland extension in Wiesbaden,
Germany. Knowing
very little about higher education opportunities
I enrolled
David Conde
at the University of
Denver and soon found that even with a night
job, I could not afford the tuition.
I soon made friends with a fellow
worker who was attending what is now
the University of Northern Colorado and
compared notes, especially about costs, and
found that I could go a full year to his
university for the same amount of money
I was paying DU for one term. So naturally, I transferred to UNC and finished my
Baccalaureate Degree.
Like Wiesbaden and DU, UNC felt “foreign” but I was used to it and besides, my
educational priorities did not allow me to
lose focus of what I was about. I did notice
however that the University was like an oasis
that was not yet offering water to Latinos.
I remember that on my days off I would
sometimes go to a farm close by and help
friends clean the beet fields with hoes. Yet
when these same friends came to Greeley
they would only drive by the University but
never entered.
I know this because there was a time
when I was walking on the edge of the campus and saw them going by. I waved at them
to come in, but they were too shy to attempt
something that I thought was so simple.
As I continued walking I searched for
the meaning of what had happened and felt
very alone and sad. The anger that I should
have experienced at that moment did not
come until later when I discovered that
inequality was not a permanent condition,
that it was not right and that it could be
changed.
The first stop in my academic career
was at what is now CSU Pueblo where we
successfully battled to establish a Chicano
Studies program. My second stop was New
Mexico Highlands University where Chicano
Studies was an on-going department and yet
it was racked by the winds of disagreement
as to its scholarly direction.
Part of my next move was to come to
then-Metro State and reorganize a Chicano
Studies Department that had lost its infrastructure. With the help of the institution we
were able to acquire faculty and get a new
academic major approved.
I learned from these experiences and
others that despite the problems of politics
and numbers, the presence of the programs
was part of a covenant between the institutions and the communities they serve that
guarantees that Latino people, language
and culture are a valued part of mainstream
American educational awareness. It does
not go too far to say that Latino Studies as
an institution of its own is the guardian of
those values, guarantees and commitment
to inclusion in the academic community and
college campus.
Many in the UNC community may
not understand the strong and negative
Latino reaction to the proposed suspension
of the Mexican American Studies major
because of the logic of low number of majors.
To the aware Latino this is a misplaced
logic because it is not about numbers and
resources that in any event are not significant, but about a spoken and unspoken
understanding that these programs are the
first line of defense against the devaluation
of the sacred artifacts of language, culture,
identity and their academic value that must
be preserved.

volví a casa para continuar lo que había
empezado en la extensión de la Universidad
Maryland en Wiesbaden, Alemania. Como
sabía poco acerca de las oportunidades
educativas me registré en la Universidad
de Denver y pronto descubrí que aun con
un trabajo de noche, no podía pagar la
matrícula.
Me hice amigo con un compañero de
trabajo que estaba estudiando en lo que es
ahora la Universidad del Norte de Colorado
y compare notas, especialmente acerca de
los costos y supe que yo podía ir a esta
Universidad todo el año por la misma cantidad de dinero que estaba pagando en DU
por un trimestre. Entonces, naturalmente
me transferí a la UNC y terminé mi Grado
Baccalaureate.
Como en Wiesbaden y DU, UNC se
sentía algo “extraño” pero yo estaba acostumbrado a esto y además de mis prioridades educativas no me permitían perder el
enfoque de lo que yo quería. Sin embargo
note que la Universidad era como un oasis
que todavía no ofrecía agua a los latinos.
Me acuerdo que en mis días libres me
iba a una hacienda cercana y ayudaba a los
amigos a limpiar los campos de remolacha
con azadones. Sin embargo cuando estos
mismos amigos venían a Greeley ellos pasaban por la Universidad pero no entraban.
Sabía esto porque hubo un momento
cuando yo estaba caminando por el borde del
campus y vi un carro lleno de ellos que pasaba. Les hice señales para que vinieran, pero
ellos eran demasiado tímidos para intentar
algo que yo pensaba que era muy sencillo.
Mientras caminaba hacia mi destino
busqué el significado de lo que paso y me
sentí muy solo y triste. La ira que debí de
haber experimentado en ese momento no
vino sino más tarde cuando descubrí que
la inigualdad no era una condición permanente, que no estaba bien y que debía
cambiarse.
La primera escala de mi Carrera académica fue lo que es ahora CSU Pueblo
en donde nosotros luchamos para crear el
programa de estudios chicanos. Mi segunda escala fue la New México Highlands
University en donde los Estudios Chicanos
era un departamento ya formado y sin
embargo estaba sacudido por los vientos del
desacuerdo sobre su dirección académica.
Parte de mi siguiente escala vino a
Metro State y reorganizar un Departamento
de Estudios Chicanos que había perdido su
infraestructura. Con la ayuda de la institución nosotros pudimos adquirir profesores
y lograr que una nueva especialización académica fuera aprobada.
Yo aprendí de estas experiencias y otras
que a pesar de los problemas políticos y de
números, la presencia de programas era
parte de un convenio entre las instituciones
y las comunidades que ellas servían y que
garantizaba que la gente latina, el lenguaje
y la cultura son una parte valiosa de la percepción normal educativa americana. No
está muy lejos decir que los Estudios Latinos
como institución propia es el guardián de
esos valores, garantías y compromiso con la
inclusión en la comunidad académica y el
campus universitario.
Muchos en la comunidad de UNC quizás
no comprendan la reacción fuerte y negativa
a la suspensión propuesta de los Estudios
México Americanos debido a la lógica del
bajo número de estudiantes. Para el latino
conocedor esta es una lógica inapropiada
porque no se trata de números y recursos
que en cualquier evento no significan nada,
sino acerca de una comprensión dicha y callada de que estos programas son la primera
línea de defensa en contra de la devaluación
de los artefactos sagrados del lenguaje, la
cultura, identidad y su valor académico que
debe ser preservado.

How are you spending your refund?
A majority of Americans plan to play it safe with their
tax refund this year

use it with frugality, which is a surprise to some experts.
“This is different than what we have seen in the past,”
said financial advisor Ryan Carlisle. “People generally take a
portion of their refund and spend it on something for themselves – a vacation or a new car.”
Frugal or not, there are still those that prefer to take their
government bonus and go a little crazy. Aurora resident David
Ceniceros decided to use his while on vacation in Florida.
“I got about $1,200 and wanted to use it for spending
money on my trip,” he said. “It worked out well, because we
left about a week after I got my return, so I used it as spending money. I’d like to say I managed to bring some home with
me, but it was gone before we got back.”

one of the country’s most active hubs for both sex and labor traffic.
“It makes it easy to bring people in and transport
them,” says Carnes, Program Manager for the Colorado
Organization for Victim Assistance. COVA, along with local,
state and federal law enforcement, works to locate and rescue victims of this human trade.

“Foreign nationals are usually the labor traffic,” says
Carnes in a lilting German accent. “The domestic clients that
we work with are usually sex traffic.” Of course, Colorado’s
problem in labor and sex traffic, while significant, is just part
of a national problem. It is estimated that there are now more
than 100,000 individuals involved in either labor or sex trafficking across the U.S. The number may be conservative.
Human trafficking sustains a number of businesses--large and small---in the state. According to the Colorado
Human Trafficking Fact Sheet, sex trafficking in the state
is a $60 million a year industry. Yet, prosecutions are rare.

culture sectors, is also pervasive in Colorado. Not surprisingly,
labor trafficking is heavily weighted with Mexican, Central
and South American workers---casualties of the curse of geography and the promise of hope. Hotel domestics, kitchen help,
landscapers and general labor, often work in the lap-of-luxury
by day and retire to nightmarish realities at shift’s end, with
little to look forward to beyond the next day’s work.
Farm workers, often in isolated parts of the state, are
among the most overworked and underpaid victims of this
trade. Often, says Carnes, their visas, cell phones or both,
are taken from them leaving them in virtual isolation.
Making matters worse is the sight of their children, some as
young as five and six, hunched over the same crop and soil.
It may be hard to imagine things being worse in matters of labor trafficking and exploitation, but a single case in
Iowa displays depravity at its inglorious worst.
In 2013, a jury awarded 32 mentally challenged men $240
million dollars in damages for years of forced labor. The men,
contracted by a Texas poultry company to an Iowa turkey operation, worked for wages that averaged 40-cents-an-hour while
being housed in dilapidated, unsanitary bug and rodent infested quarters. Prosecutors proved the men were routinely beaten,
sleep-deprived and denied medical attention. One victim, say
investigators, had teeth so damaged he could not chew a waffle.
Another’s hands were infected from being unable to wash the
turkey blood off each night. The verdict is under appeal.
“I’m just happy that people are paying attention,” says
Beth McCann, former Denver Manager of Public Safety and
current state legislator, of the problem Colorado faces with
human exploitation. McCann, also a candidate for Denver
District Attorney, sponsored legislation that added heft to
laws on human trafficking and made it easier to prosecute
those charged with this crime, particularly those accused of
exploiting young girls and boys caught in this web.
Some of those trapped in the sex trade are young runaways---including pre-teens. Others are those who fell out of or
escaped from foster care. Most get reeled in by predatory adults
who target parks, bus depots or places on the street where
young people are known to gather. More often than not, they
use the same ruse. “They’ll talk to them about where they
could stay,” says McCann. “So they go and these traffickers put
them up, give them food, give them alcohol and drugs and it
progresses.” The promise of money, she says, rarely bears fruit.
But even if the pimps or traffickers are caught, prosecutions are not guaranteed “because the witness is often
young, scared and often with an emotional attachment” to
the person who exploited them, says McCann.
Another factor in this sordid equation is that many of
these young victims have already been physically or psychologically damaged by the time they arrive in Colorado.
“Typically (it’s) those children who have been victimized their
whole lives,” says Adams County prosecutor Christa Landis
who heads the county’s Child Victims Unit. Compounding
the problem is under reporting.
But reporting guarantees neither prosecution nor conviction. According to a Colorado state government document,
between 2006 and 2013 only 38 cases of human trafficking
were filed. “Four individuals had two cases, meaning that
34 defendants were charged with these crimes,” reads the
report. Only two individuals were convicted.
For many of the young girls, reporting the crime
is unthinkable. Experts in the field explain this as the
“Stockholm Syndrome.” The condition goes back to a bank
robbery in Sweden many years ago where a number of
female victims, held for days in the bank’s vault, gradually
became emotionally attached with their captors. Many of the
young girls she interviews, says Landis, don’t do anything
“because they think they love their pimp.”
Then, there’s also “the whole drug component.” Leaving
the life also means leaving the source of whatever drugs
these waifs or runaways have come to expect or need. For
the boys, it’s a different story.
For boys, she says, it is often easier to store the shame
than bear the pain. It would mean, says the Adams County
prosecutor, confronting “the shame and humiliation” of having performed sex with men.

Also, the Pueblo Reservoir is the largest
body of water in Southern Colorado. It covers 10,000 acres of land with 4,600 acres of
water and 60 miles of shoreline. With 400
camp sites this makes the Pueblo Reservoir
number one for boating and camping destinations in Southern Colorado.

sectores del turismo y la agricultura, es
también dominante en Colorado. Sin ser
sorpresa, el tráfico del trabajo está fuertemente en los trabajadores mexicanos, centroamericanos y suramericanos- victimas
del curso de la geografía y la promesa de
una esperanza. Las empleadas de hoteles,
ayudantes de cocina, jardineros y trabajo
en general, trabajan con frecuencia en las
faldas del lujo durante el día y se retiran a
la realidad de las pesadillas al final de la
jornada, con poco para mirar adelante sino
al trabajo del día siguiente.
Los trabajadores del campo, aislados
con frecuencia a partes del estado, son las
victimas más explotadas en el trabajo y peor
pagadas en este comercio. Con frecuencia,
dice Carnes, sus visas, teléfonos celulares
o ambos, se les confiscan dejándolos en
un aislamiento virtual. Haciendo peor las
cosas es a la vista de sus hijos, algunos
hasta de cinco o seis años, doblados sobre
la misma cosecha y suelo.
Puede ser difícil de imaginar cosas
peores que el tráfico del trabajo y la explotación, pero un solo caso de Iowa muestra
la depravación en lo peor de su vergüenza.
En el 2013, un jurado dió a 32 hombres
mentalmente retardados 240 millones de
dólares por daños en trabajos forzados. Los
hombres, contratados por una compañía avícola de Texas a una operación de pavos en
Iowa, trabajaban por salarios que promediaban 40-centavos por hora mientras vivian en
casas dilapidadas, sin sanidad e infestada
de bichos y roedores. Los procuradores comprobaron que los hombres estaban siendo
golpeados rutinariamente, privados del
sueño y se les negaba la atención médica.
Una víctima, dicen los investigadores, tenía
dientes tan podridos que no podían masticar
un “waffle”. Las manos de otros estaban
infectadas por no poder lavarse la sangre de
los pavos todas las noches. El veredicto está
siendo apelado.
“Yo estoy contenta solamente con que la
gente preste atención”, dijo Beth McCann,
antigua Denver Manager of Public Safety y

Rockies rock a 5-1 win!
This past weekend the Colorado
Rockies and their fans kicked off
the 2015 season in normal Opening
Day fashion. Lots of fans in Rockies’
colors flooded LoDo to ring in the
new season packing just about every
sports bar within a 10-block radius of
Coors Field. Colorado’s boys of summer were coming off the sweep of the
Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee
then beat the Chicago Cubs in their

home season opener 5-1; however
the Cubbies managed to take the series after beating
Colorado in the following two games of their three-game
series. At the end of the day the Colorado Rockies delivered
a win on Opening Day. It’s a long road to the championship
for MLB fans.
Early on the Rockies sit atop the NL West 5–2 a game
ahead of Arizona, Los Angeles, and San Diego while San
Francisco stumbled out the gate with just three wins.
Colorado managed to add on one of the Giants losses in
Monday night’s game in San Francisco with a 2-0 win.
Colorado has two remaining games with the Giants Tuesday
and Wednesday night before heading to L.A. to face the
Dodgers. The Rockies then return home to host the San
Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants.
It is typical for Colorado to come out the gate fast, but
history has dictated that it’s unlikely they may be able to
keep up this pace. For fans it’s always nice to see the home
team consistent and at the top.
In other sports, the Colorado Rapids beat the FC Dallas
4-0 at Toyota Stadium. The Rapids face the Seattle Sounders
FC at home on Saturday, April 18th.
The Denver Nuggets beat the Sacramento Kings 122111, now coached by their former coach, George Karl.
