Descripción: Construction and Environmental project SIW-1506: Flood museum area
Stichting Buitengebied
Dates: 29/08 . 12/09
Participants: 8
Type: CONS & ENVI
Age: 18+
Location: In the area of Ouwerkerk, province of Zeeland
Location & partner: Four concrete mega-structures in the old sea dyke near Ouwerkerk in Zeeland,
the Phoenix caissons, tell the story of the big flood that took the Netherlands by surprise during the
night of February 1st 1953, with devastating consequences. This disaster took the lives of 1836
people and forever changed the landscape of the province of Zeeland. The ¿Watersnood¿ (Flood)
museum in Ouwerkerk, located in the four caissons that closed off the last breach in the dykes of
the south-westerly part of the Netherlands and the campsite ¿De vierbannen¿ and restaurant ¿De
Vierbannen¿ are the partners of this project.
Work: The volunteers will work in the area surrounding the museum, which is a national monument.
The creeks, washed out by the sea water, the marshes, the remaining part of the old sea dyke, the
new sea dyke and the nature reserve all are the results of the flood.
Participants together with forest rangers will also work on different activities in the maintenance of
the surroundings such as cutting bushes and wood and maintaining the paths, look-outs and
playground. It is expected of volunteers to be careful with equipment and bicycles etc. Work will be
mostly carried out outdoors.
Accommodation & food: Volunteers will be camping on the campsite Vierbannen next to the
museum. Volunteers can use kitchen, shower and bathrooms at the campsite, but will be asked to
clean them every day. They should bring their own tents, airbeds/mats and sleeping bags. The
group will take care of their own breakfast and lunch during the project, dinner will be taken care of
by the partner.
Leisure activities: Together with the camp leaders the volunteers will discuss the recreational
program. For example they can explore the area by bike, go swimming, visit a museum or other
places in the Netherlands, such as Zierikzee, a city nearby. The camp leaders will have some ideas,
but of course it is possible for the volunteers to put forward their own ideas for this program! Leisure
time will also be spent on the theme: ¿Go local, go loco!¿
During this activity, the participants will interact with local partner organisations and communities,
build capacities to live and work together with people from different cultures, share cultures and
have fun!
