Mondrian & De Stijl
DelftWare WonderWare
Discover the Modern
With almost 300 works, the Gemeente
museum’s Mondrian collection is the
largest in the world. It covers every
phase in the impressive career of this
master of modern art. Not many artists
have been so successful at constantly
reinventing themselves from the early
stages of their artistic development until
their death while maintaining a high
level of artistic quality in their work. The
enormous variety of work enables the
Gemeentemuseum to show to the public
the full scope of Mondrian’s artistic
development, from realistic to abstract.
The exhibition also contains his last
– unfinished – masterpiece, the Victory
Boogie Woogie (1942-1944), a monu
ment to New York, the city that exudes
rhythm and unbridled vitality.
Dutch delftware is an iconic product
often regarded as a symbol of the
Netherlands’ seventeenth-century
Golden Age. As the owner of one the
biggest and best collections anywhere
in the world, the Gemeentemuseum Den
Haag is proud to display their collection.
DelftWare WonderWare will employ a
fascinating thematic approach to give
visitors a detailed picture of the Delft
pottery industry over the centuries.
The presentation will show that the
highly desirable oriental porcelain had
a major impact on Dutch domestic
interiors. A vast range of everyday and
ornamental objects became available,
both in Chinese porcelain and in
Delft faience.
A visit to the Gemeentemuseum Den
Haag is a wonderful day out. Berlage’s
dazzling Art Deco building and the
museum’s collection of top works by
iconic 20th-century artists like Pablo
Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Constant,
Francis Bacon and Louise Bourgeois
make it a unique destination. The
museum also possesses the greatest
collection of works by Piet Mondrian
anywhere in the world.
