Domingo de Ramos siempre me recuerda de mi niñez, cuando íbamos a Misa como
familia mis hermanos con mi mamá. A la entrada de nuestra iglesia del Sagrado Corazón
había vendedores de ramos de varias hierbas olorosas como la manzanilla, pequeñas
ramas de eucalipto y laurel, entre otras hierbas desconocidas. Toda la Iglesia se llenaba
del olor de los ramos y las palmas blancas tradicionales también eran algo raro que la
mayoría de nosotros desconocíamos. Eventualmente los ramos de tan gran fiesta
encontraban su lugar en un espacio especial en la casa, principalmente en la cocina o en
el comedor. Por la tradición del ayuno, la abstinencia, la oración y las obras de caridad
que practicábamos muy “severamente” yo sabía que lo que venía en la semana en el
cambio de los ritos en la Misa era algo espectacular, que al final de cuentas, la mayoría
del tiempo yo terminaba dormido en la banca bajo el cuidado de mi madre.
Domingo de Ramos da inicio a la Semana Santa y es una celebración que nos invita a contemplar lo que viene
en la semana. Nos prepara a entrar más intensamente en la Pasión de Jesús para así celebrar íntimamente el
misterio pascual. Sabemos que aún está por suceder lo más intenso y espiritual durante el curso de la semana,
especialmente durante el Triduo Pascual (Jueves Santo, Viernes Santo y Sábado Santo).
Nosotros como Católicos sabemos que durante el Domingo de Ramos las iglesias están casi a reventar de
gente, y es el gran gusto de la Madre Iglesia al ver a muchos de sus hijos reunidos bajo el mismo techo para
reconocer a Dios como su creador, redentor y santificador. La Madre Iglesia también sufre mucho durante el
resto del año al ver a tantos de sus hijos ausentes y sin ésa conexión en la alabanza, la oración, la reverencia y
la involucración en la vida comunitaria de sus parroquias. Nuestra Madre Iglesia nos recuerda una vez más,
por medio de ésta celebración de Domingo de Ramos, que Jesús entra triunfante en la ciudad santa de
Jerusalén, donde es recibido con gran gusto por todos los reunidos creyendo que Jesús. Con poder político,
pondría orden a todo un sistema de gobierno así como tomaba su nueva posición de Rey en Jerusalén. Pero
para el desengaño de todos, Jesús demuestra que su gobierno y reinado no es de éste mundo, sino de las
realidades espirituales tal y como consistentemente lo había manifestado por medio de su ministerio entre la
gente necesitada de su ayuda.
Tanta gente no tenía ni la menor idea de lo que está a punto de suceder con aquel que han proclamado rey por
popularidad; aun así, ni los mismos discípulos de Jesús se percataban de lo que estaba por cumplirse aunque el
mismo Hijo de Dios se los había revelado en privado. Era cuestión de tiempo que los discípulos se darían
cuenta que todo lo acontecido se hubiera de cumplir de acuerdo a un plan divino, aunque todas la
circunstancias no privaba a persona alguna de su voluntad libre. Claro que en cada uno de nosotros como en
toda nuestra historia de la humanidad, Dios siempre ha conocido, conoce y conocerá todas las posibilidades
acerca de nuestro proceder. Dios Padre revela al Hijo en su humanidad lo que es necesario hacer para que toda
la humanidad, de una vez por todas sea presentada ante Dios por el amor que está en Cristo, el costo es la cruz.
Que esta Semana Santa sea de verdad un tiempo de preparación de nuestro espíritu para estar en una relación
más plena con Dios. En nuestro propio mundo moderno, la realidad de las cosas no es en particular lo que
pensamos cuando un nuevo líder toma posición de su reciente puesto. Muchas de las veces vemos en el pasado
del líder una trayectoria que nos dice bastante acerca de lo que se trata el nuevo líder instalado en posición de
gobernación y administración, sea secular o religioso y es siempre de parte de Dios que viene la sabiduría al
líder cuando la persona, es persona de oración, tiene educación y ética profesional. Ya sea que seamos laicos o
religiosos, Dios nos invita a que adentremos pues en su vida y misterio, ya que respondiendo al llamado damos
testimonio de que somos otros Cristos que dan la vida por los demás en su servicio, porque el mayor impulso
para servir siempre es el amor humano. Abramos pues nuestro corazón a Cristo, quien se entrega por nosotros
para redimirnos y regresarnos a la gloria del Padre. Amen, así sea.

Palm Sunday always reminds me of my childhood, when I would go to Mass with my
mom and my brothers. Vendors would sell bouquets of various fragrant herbs at the
entrance of Sacred Heart Church such as chamomile, small branches of eucalyptus and
laurel, among other unknown herbs and palms. The entire church would be filled with a
myriad of scents and the traditional white palms which were such a rarity that most of us
were unaware of them. Eventually those celebrated palms would take a special place in
our house, mainly in the kitchen or in the dining room. As we faithfully practiced the
tradition of fasting, abstinence, prayer and acts of charity, I knew that the change in the
rites of the Mass would be something spectacular, but most of the time I ended up falling
asleep on the pew under the care of my mother.
Palm Sunday marks the start of Holy Week and it is a celebration that invites us to contemplate what this week
brings. It prepares us to enter more intensely into the Passion of Christ so as to intimately celebrate the
mystery of Easter. We know that it will become more intense and spiritual as the week progresses, especially
during the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday).
We as Catholics know that churches are filled with people during Palm Sunday, and the Mother Church is
happy to see so many of her children gathered under one roof to recognize God as their Creator, Redeemer and
Sanctifier. The Mother Church suffers during the rest of the year as so many of her children are absent and
don’t have a connection of praise, prayer, reverence, and involvement in the community life of their parishes.
Our Mother Church reminds us once more through this celebration of Palm Sunday that Jesus enters
triumphantly into the holy city of Jerusalem. Jesus is greeted with great joy by all the assembled believing that
Jesus, with political power would put a system of government in place as well as take his new position of King
in Jerusalem. To the disappointment of all, Jesus shows that his government and reign is not of this world, but
of spiritual realities as he had consistently said throughout his ministry among the people that needed His help.
So many people didn’t have the slightest idea of what was about to happen with the one they had proclaimed
King. Even Jesus’ disciples didn’t know what to expect even though the Son of God had revealed it to them in
private. It was only a matter of time that the disciples would realize that all that happened would be according
to a divine plan. All the circumstances did not deprive any person of their free will. Surely, that in each of us,
as in our history of humanity, God has always known, and will know all the possibilities about our origins.
God our Father reveals the Son in his humanity so that once and for all, all of mankind maybe presented
before God through the love which is in Christ; the cost of the cross.
May this Easter actually be a time of preparation for our spirit to be closer to God. In our own modern world,
reality is not particularly what we think it is when a new leader takes his current position. Many times we see a
trajectory that tells us enough about the new leader in a position of governance and administration, whether
secular or religious. The wisdom always comes from God when the leader is a person of prayer, is educated
and ethical. Whether we are lay or religious, God invites us to enter his life and mystery. Since answering the
call is testimony that we are all being Christ to others, giving life to others through our service. Our inspiration
to always serve is human love. Let us open our hearts to Christ, who helps to redeem us and return us to the
glory of the Father. Amen.

The Holy Saturday blessing of food
for Easter breakfast is especially
popular among the Polish people. It
is called “swieconka” (pronounced
sh-ve-yen-sohn-ka) which means “holy food.”
La bendición del Sábado Santo de alimentos para el
desayuno de Pascua es especialmente popular entre la
comunidad polaca.
Se llama “swieconka” (se
pronuncia sh-ve-yen-sohn-ka) y significa “alimentos
sagrados”.
Families prepare baskets with the food they eat on
Easter morning - decorated eggs, sausage, ham, bacon,
a loaf of bread with a cross cut into the crust, cheese,
salt, horseradish and butter carved into a lamb. The
baskets are brought to the parish church on Holy
Saturday to be blessed by the priest.
Las familias preparan cestas con los alimentos que
comen para el desayuno de Pascua - huevos decorados,
salchicha, jamón, tocino, pan con una cruz cortada en
la corteza, queso, sal, rábano, y mantequilla tallada en
un cordero. Las cestas se llevan a la parroquia el
Sábado Santo para ser bendecidas por el sacerdote.

PREPARACION SACRAMENTAL

Baptism: During pregnancy or after birth, parents are
expected to attend a Baptismal Preparation meeting held on
the first Sunday of the month at 12:30PM. Baptisms are
celebrated on the fourth Sunday of every month at 2:30PM.

Marriage: For pre-marriage preparation and to assure the
wedding date you prefer, please call the Rectory at least six
months in advance before confirming a reception hall.
Communion, Confirmation and Conversion for Adults:
Please call the rectory for an appointment.
Communion, Confirmation and Conversion for
children:
Please call the Coordinator of Religious
Education. All children should be enrolled in R.E. 1st - 8th
grades.
Communion to the homebound: Please call the parish
office with information about those who are shut-ins or sick
so that visits may be made. In an emergency situation,
please call immediately at any hour.
Anointing of the Sick and Funerals: Please call the
rectory if your family member is sick and needs the
Anointing of the Sick, or when a family member dies, so
that the parish priests may minister to your needs and assist
you in planning the Funeral Liturgy. This includes the
Wake Service, the Eucharistic Liturgy and the final
commitment at the Cemetery.
Bautismos: Llamar a la Rectoría para registrarse y
señalar la fecha de la clase de preparación y la fecha de
Bautizo. Siempre celebramos el Bautismo el segundo
domingo de cada mes, a las 2:30PM inmediatamente

At 10:00AM we will visit the neighborhood inviting
our neighbors to our Easter Celebration. We will

Una vez más, San Bartolomé recibirá un grupo de
unas 20 chicas de la secundaria (la mayoría de Ohio)
mientras que hacen obras de caridad alrededor de la
ciudad, así como en nuestra parroquia.
Missionary Youth Group
Once again St. Bartholomew will host a group of
about 20 high school girls (most from Ohio) while
they do charitable work around the city as well as
our parish.
The girls give up their Spring Break to come to
Chicago. In return we provide room and board.
Various ministries will help with meals and
beverages. What is still needed are breakfast items,
snacks and desserts. Of course monetary donations
are appreciated.
