Course
Goal
To
prepare
students
with
the
information
and
skill
necessary
to
safely
operate
a
motor
vehicle.
Course
Objectives
At
the
conclusion
of
this
course,
you
should
be
able
to:
1. Apply
traffic
laws
and
the
Rules
of
the
Road
to
various
roadway
situations
and
conditions.
2. Develop
the
essential
decision
making
skills
for
safe
operation
of
a
motor
vehicle.
3. Describe
general
performance
capabilities
of
motor
vehicles
as
well
as
physical
and
natural
factors
that
effect
vehicle
control
systems.
4. Describe
the
legal
and
moral
responsibilities
for
a
person
involved
in
a
traffic
crash
situation,
the
financial
responsibility
law
and
minimum
insurance
coverage.
5. Demonstrate
knowledge
of
the
D.U.I.
laws
to
assure
students
make
appropriate
decisions
in
regard
to
the
use
of
alcohol
and
other
drugs
before
operating
or
riding
in
a
motor
vehicle.
6. Demonstrate
a
basic
knowledge
of
operations,
skills,
and
laws
pertaining
to
motorcycle
usage
and
their
impact
on
automobile
traffic.
7. Demonstrate
skill
and
competency
in
performing
basic
maneuvers
in
operation
of
a
motor
vehicle
under
actual
driving
conditions.
8. Develop
an
understanding
of
basic
car
care.
Specific
Course
Activities
Students
will:
1. Participate
in
15
driving
lessons.
2. Be
able
to
apply
the
Rules
of
the
Road,
textbook
readings,
and
handouts
to
behind
the
wheel
situations.
3. Student
and
Parent
should
successfully
complete
SHS
Behind
the
Wheel
Packet
4. Participate
in
class
discussions.
Grading
Criteria
Students
will
receive
a
letter
grade
for
classroom
and
a
standard
based
grade
for
behind‐
the‐wheel
phase,
more
information
can
be
found
in
your
student’s
driving
packet.
Students
must
pass
both
phases
of
the
course
to
be
eligible
for
an
Illinois
Driver’s
License.

Classroom:
A=
99‐90,
B=
89‐80,
C=
79‐70,
D=
69‐60,
Less
then
50=
F
Behind
the
Wheel:
Standards
Tests
&
Extra
Credit
A
total
of
six
unit
tests
will
be
given
in
the
classroom
phase.
Each
test
is
worth
40
points.
With
each
unit
students
will
also
take
an
essay
portion.
There
will
be
six
written
tests
and
each
will
correspond
with
a
recent
behind‐the‐wheel
lesson.
Each
car
test
will
be
worth
ten
points
for
a
total
of
fifty
points
per
unit.
Extra
credit
assignments
are
available
to
students
for
up
to
an
additional
ten
points
per
unit.
Classroom
Final
Exam
The
final
exam
is
a
cumulative
test
of
all
six
units
and
is
worth
a
possible
one
hundred
points.
Make­up
&
Late
Policy
All
missing
work
must
be
made
up
for
partial
credit.
Classroom
Expectations
&
State
Requirements
1. Obtain
an
Illinois
instructor
permit
and
hold
for
a
total
of
nine
months.
2. Complete
30
hours
of
classroom
instruction
3. Complete
6
hours
behind
the
wheel
instruction
Note:
Absences
on
days
when
students
are
scheduled
for
classroom
or
driving
must
be
made
up
in
order
to
complete
State
of
Illinois
requirements.
Tips
for
Success
Students
need
to
have
a
good
overall
attitude.
Specifically
for
the
behind
the
wheel
phase,
be
sure
to
practice
at
home
with
licensed
adult
as
often
as
possible.
Note:
Students
are
offered
extra
help
during
the
school
day
upon
request.
