The Bells The bells are now out of action until maintenance and repair work has been completed. The first cleaning session took place yesterday morning and will be repeated on Mondays and Saturdays throughout January with the next one scheduled for Saturday the 17th starting at 09.30. Additional volunteers will be very welcome. The work centres on the operation of a wire brush and dustpan to be followed by application of a protective paint. Goggles, masks and gloves will be provided. The main task of repairing bearings on the bells and a number of clappers will start tomorrow morning (12 January) and continue throughout the week. To reduce our costs, we agreed to provide able-bodied assistants each day to help the specialist foundry worker, and we would welcome a few more volunteers. Tasks will be physical and straightforward but could involve several trips up and down the stairs. The bell chamber is cold and often windy. The bell company does not allow volunteers over the age of 70 or under the age of 16. If you are able to take part for a half-day or more please let John Morrison know via the Parish Office or telephone 01243551498 or email [email protected] We guarantee good company and a unique experience. There will be a further opportunity to volunteer when the restored clappers return from the foundry. We are promised a full ring of bells for Easter (at the latest). Poetry and Faith Evening For the third event in our Poetry and Faith series we will be looking at T S Eliot’s Four Quartets. The evening will be led by Janet Aidin, with selected readings from our own Fr Brian and Yvette Cook. It will be held at Arundel Museum on Wednesday 28 January at 7.30 pm. Tickets – which are on sale from the Parish Office – are just £5 and include tea or coffee. Everyone is very welcome. Sat 7 Feb Quiz+! 7pm at St Nicholas. Sausages, Songs and Sing-a-Long. Our popular quiz night with a bit extra for everyone! Tickets £10 (children £5), include a two-course meal, and are on sale from today after church and from the parish office. Organised by the Arundel-Stegaurach link. Swallow Club dinners All comers are welcome to the Swallow Club dinners organised by the Friends of St Nicholas. The next will be on Friday 13 February and our guest will be Arabella Dorman, the widely-celebrated war artist and portraitist who has been working recently in Afghanistan. The dinner after that will be on Wednesday 10 June when our guest speaker will be Alex Spofforth, senior partner of the important local accountancy firm of Spofforths. He is an expert on the Battle of Waterloo, whose 200th anniversary occurs on the 18 June; Alex is, in particular, the Chairman of the Project Hougoumont Appeal, seeking to restore the site of the epic defence of Hougoumont Farm which was one of the key features of the battle. Please contact Daniel Hodson on 01903 883234 or at [email protected] if you would like to come to either or both events. Portugal in September Canon Michael Weaver is organising another pilgrimage, this time a river cruise on the River Douro from Sept 15 - 23 2015.
