REV. ANTHONY ROSSO
n Monday 2 February Deacon Anthony
Rosso will be ordained to the priesthood in
Florida - where he has been caring for his sick
mother - so Bishop Marcus will be travelling to
the USA to ordain Tony for our diocese.
Many of you will remember him from the times
he has spent in the parish as a student. So, to
mark this momentous occasion, parishioners are
being asked to take an envelope from the back of
the churches and to offer a gift to Tony in
recognition of his ordination as a priest for our
diocese.
Please take an envelope, and return it either in
the offertory collection bag, to the Parish Office
or to any of the Parish Team. Any cheques
should be made out to the parish - not to Tony!
Please hand in your gift by next Sunday (25
January) and the amount collected will be
presented at a later date.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS: TRANSPORT

UNIVERSITY CHAPLAINCY
he Catholic University Chaplain, Deacon
Keith Ballard writes: “Welcome back to the
is currently considering the removal of support
for transport to those children living more than
three miles away from their schools (2 miles for
under 8s.) Currently, these children receive a
free bus pass as an acknowledgement of their
right to attend a Catholic school.
This ‘discretionary’ arrangement has been in
place for many years, and is a consequence of
the 1944 Education Act that established the
modern position of the Church in education.
All school bus services for all children (paying
or not) may be affected as the bus operators will
only run buses that are financially viable.
Two years ago, a similar proposal was
withdrawn after a concerted campaign by
parents and those connected with our
schools. We understand that at least one
political party locally have insisted that the
withdrawal of transport be reconsidered in
return for supporting the Labour Group’s budget
proposals.
We would be most grateful if you would write to
your three local councillors to encourage them
not to pursue this issue. The addresses for all
councillors are on the Kirklees Council website
or available from school. A draft letter is
available from the school that may help you. It
is for you to use any way that you wish.
We would also be grateful if you would sign the
online petition and encourage others to sign.
