Fall 2014
M
y second year as the outfitter boasted
a great slate of hunters, crew, weather
and of course, animals. It all started
attending Dallas Safari Club, Safari Club and
the Edmonton Boat and Sportsman’s shows.
It is always nice to see so many familiar
faces and reminisce about the hunts over the
years. February through April had us busy
as usual trapping wolves, hauling firewood
and supplies to camps. We managed to
catch a bunch of wolves and now have lots
of pelts for sale. They are taxidermy quality
and tanned hanging pelts. Please send me
an email at [email protected] if
you’re interested. We had a normal winter for
snowfall, although it all came in January and
then never snowed until April again.
Bob MacDonald and repeat hunter David
Riddle were our first clients of the year
looking for the elusive spring grizzly. Bob
had a shot at a good one in the first days but
never had another opportunity with guide
James O’Farrell. David and I seemed always
one day behind though we had a big bear
walk around the cabin during the first night
but we never heard it! Our last spring bear
hunter was repeat David Howton. Terry and
David chased a huge bear out of our Hyland
cabin but could not get a shot. They were
close once but only the head and neck were
visible from behind the cabin door. David had
an opportunity to shoot at 300 yards, but did
not want to risk a long shot. The bear never
came back. David and I passed on an small
old boar a few days later at 30 yards. We saw
an 8 ft. bear on our way back to town but he
was too quick for us to get a shot. June and
July flew by with fixing camps, cutting trail,
working the horses and in general gearing up
for the season.
On a personal note Chelsea and Glenn
Martin had a new addition to their family
in August, Selleck Martin! Courtney and I
also bought a nice log home on 10 acres very
close to Watson Lake.
August 1 started off busy with Rick, Nick and
Billy Trizano taking 3 goats and 2 caribou
with guides Terry, Donn and Dallas Tiegen.
Aaron Eagen was the wrangler on that trip.
Michael Porter and I along with wrangler
Jordan Berry took Hugo Gonzales and
Francisco Villarreal on a short 4-day trip on
which Hugo shot a great Goat and Francisco
missed a huge Billy. They had to leave early to
attend family matters. Chad, Marsha, Walker
and Wyatt Shearer were next with Terry,
Donn and Aaron guiding them to a great goat
and moose. This great footage will be on their
TV show Shoot Straight next summer You
can catch this show next summer!
At the same time Michael and Jordan took
Randy Minzenmayer to a great 14-year-old
Billy with almost 6-inch bases. On August
21st longtime friend Travis Gitzel and
Luis Caballero of Mexico joined Terry and
James taking two goats and Luis also took
a nice caribou. Travis also howled in a pack
of wolves but unfortunately they came
in downwind so no shots got fired. Dean
Romero put on many miles with Michael and
Jordan before getting his Billy. They also saw
a big griz but were unable to get a shot. John
Muir and Donn took one day to take their
Billy. Sept 1 had Sergei Gladky and Juergen
Sartori fly to horse camps while Scott Wright
and Jay Wolfenden went to an Argo camp.
Dave and Donn guided Scot and Jay to two
caribou and a 63 inch moose. James and
Troy Beaudoin showed Juergen a great bull
caribou. Michael worked Sergei hard and
was rewarded with a big moose and caribou
along with a nice goat. Sept 10th had Rusty
Bridges going to Michael’s camp, Mark and
Trish Regher with Dave by boat, Shane Koss
with Donn in Argo camp, Vincent Lacoste
and Juan Cantu in horse camp with James
and Troy guiding. Allen Kallel and Robbie
started the river hunts. Rob and Allen saw 3
great bulls in the first half hour of their hunt
and Allen decided to pass. He then had to
work hard to get his bull on the second last
day. Juan Cantu and Troy shot a huge moose
and caribou, while bow hunter Vincent took
a nice moose, missed a great caribou and
decided not to try for the huge Ceaser Lakes
grizzly that wrecks our cabin. James found
the bear feeding in a meadow but could not
talk Vincent into trying! The legend of the
Black Boar grows!!! Mom was impressed
that she had a Russian, German, Frenchman,
Mexican, American and a Canadian hunter
all in her home in one day…and there was
no problems because everyone had GUNS!!
Dave worked very hard with Mark and Trish
but could not come up with a big bull in bow
range. They seen a very large one but 100
yards was just not close enough. Donn and
Shane shot a wolverine first day and saw a
beautiful bull moose. The huge moose they
were searching for did not show himself but
a great heavy horned great caribou. Michael
and Rusty worked hard for a great late season
goat and a few days later a caribou.
Robinson thru prime moose country with
horses but could not find a trophy bull, so we
flew them into a great moose lake to spend 3
days there before Karl decided he would let
the moose win this time. Donn took repeat
Al Holland to a new lake. Al made it out late
to camp due to plane delays and then had to
leave early due to prior work obligations, but
saw plenty of bull moose unfortunately none
that were big enough to go back to Florida.
Donn and I took father and son Jim and
Jake Hoffman on our late season caribou
hunt. There was no snow on ground so
we used Argos. Jake and I struck on the
first day with a great heavy old Bull. Jim
and Donn followed on day 3 with a heavy
palmated wide bull. Terry and repeat
hunter Sam Switzenbaum followed us but
unfortunately Sam’s back could not handle
the rough Argo rides!
Sept 22 was our big hunt change day and
of course weather and planes did not want
to cooperate to make it go smoothly! Lenora
Oct 1 was a great day as we changed
hunters with only one small plane delay for
one day. Josh’s bow hunter David Drettman
struck the first night in camp with a great
bull, one day before the hunt started. Tim
with repeat hunter Matt Quillin almost
shot a huge grizzly with over 8 inch wide
track (9ft. plus grizzly) on the way to
camp. Then on the first day of hunting
Matt took a nice bull moose. Robbie Porter
guided Kevin Wheeler to a great heavy old
It really was a great year in the Yukon. We
had once again an amazing group of guides.
Thank You, Terry and Donn Wilkinson,
Dave and James O’Farrell, Michael and
Robbie Porter, Troy Beaudoin, Josh
Johnson, Tim Beurge, Dallas Teigen along
with wranglers Aaron Eagan and Jordan
Berry. Again thanks to the hard working
ladies in town keeping hunters fed and
entertained, thank you Ruth Wilkinson, Jeri
Hofmann and my Fiancé Courtney Dobek!
and Ralph Dampman of Trophy Ridge
Outfitters in Wyoming struck first with a
great bull moose early in hunt with Dave.
Troy followed quickly with Mark Gibbar.
This is when the big old Bulls decided to
take their cows deep into the timber and
go quiet! Guides Josh Johnson and Terry
worked hard for Allison Grundman and her
brother John Herrick to come out with a
nice black bear. I took Allison myself for a
couple extra days to see 4 more bull moose
but nothing quite big enough. We showed
up 10 minutes too late as a huge bull had
walked right thru camp just before us. Josh
was quick to show us pictures of the big bull
in front of the cabin. James and guide Tim
Beurge looked after Tim’s distant relatives
Alden and Scott Beurge taking a Bull Moose
and wolf. Robbie took Mike and Jeremy
Owens and midway thru hunt took a great
heavy bull. Michael and Jordan toured Karl
bull early in the hunt. Repeat hunters Don
Stout and Mike Kaczor invited their friend
Bill Wright into camp and were nice enough
to give Bill first try at the camp Bull. Bill
took the 205 P&Y moose a couple days
later, thanks to Donn and his friend Mark
Jakubowski for great calling. Mike arrowed
a nice bull a couple days later with James.
Don and Dave saw a couple big bulls and
on the second last night arrowed one. They
found the next morning that it was a minor
wound. Troy and Marvin had a nice bull
on their lake right off the bat but Marvin
decided to wait and was rewarded with a
very unique bull with huge dagger points
coming off both horns. Terry and Dennis
Dunn were the last moose hunters to
come out of the bush on Oct 9th and after
covering plenty of country and seeing lots
of moose could not come up with a trophy
bull within range of Dennis’s Bow.
We also had a great group of hunters along
with many repeat hunters. It’s so great
seeing familiar faces and friends journey
up to the Yukon to hunt in our beautiful
wilderness. In all we had a tremendously
successful season minus one week of very
difficult moose hunting. It is always great to
make it through the season with no injuries
or major problems.
All of us at Ceaser Lake Outfitters are
already looking forward to 2015. It is almost
completely booked up! We will be attending
Dallas and SCI this year again!
We are already
looking forward
