While we are required to collect funds to support ‘outside’ charities, such as Catholic Relief Services, the Campaign for Human Development and the Archdiocesan Collections (Catholic High School, which is next weekend); we will only pass the basket one time. If you have an envelope designated for a special collection please place it with your regular weekly contribution in the basket. If you choose to pay by check without the envelope, make a notation in the memo section on the front of your check. There will only be one collection most weekends. We will still have two separate collections for our Parish Monthly and other parish related collections. Hopefully, this is the year each household can contribute the minimum of $10.00 per week and we can eliminate parish second collections as well. Fr. Joe Keough The Shroud of Turin is believed to be the actual burial cloth of Jesus. It will be on public display this year. Fr. Michael Casey of St. James Parish (896 Main Street, Manchester, CT 06040) will host a tour of Milan, Turin, Ravenna and Rome from June 15-24th of this year. For more information, contact Fr. Casey directly to obtain a flier. The fee, $3,895.00 pp includes airfare, hotels and some meals, as well as, entrance to major exhibits and shrines. Final payment is needed by March 1, 2015. We gratefully ask for your support of the 2015 High School Collection on January 24/25th, which assists our Catholic secondary schools as they foster educational excellence and prepare young people to become productive citizens and church leaders. Your gift is an investment that will continue to pay dividends. CALLING ALL MEN Many St. Mary parishioners attend the men's retreat held each year at the Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center in West Hartford. Perhaps you have thought from time to time that you needed a new approach to refresh your connection with God. The retreat offers many opportunities to stir the embers of the fire of faith--prayer, reflection, speakers, music, meditation--to name but a few. The cost for providing food and services is minimal. Our parish weekend is Friday, February 6th at 6:00 p.m. until noon on Sunday, February 8th. Please join us this February. Help yourself and the St. Mary community grow into a deeper and more expressive faith. You may register on line at www.holyfamilyretreat.org or by calling the Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center (860-521-0440). Retreat offering is $295, more if you can, less if you can't. The offering is only a suggestion and should not prevent anyone from attending. Please call John Webster at 860-667-0516, to discuss any aspect of the retreat. We are looking forward to seeing you there. 2 CCD News: 860-666-6347 or [email protected] All CCD classes will meet this week. This year, in conjunction with our RCIA program, we are offering adult education classes on various topics of the Catholic Faith. All parishioners are invited to join our RCIA candidates to learn more about the practices and beliefs of the Catholic Church. Classes should last from 60 to 90 minutes. Our next class will be on Monday, January 19th at 7:00 p.m. in the Lower Rectory. The topic for the evening will be “The Sacraments”. Congratulations to their parents and godparents as they assume the responsibility for raising these children in a loving relationship with Jesus Christ! REMINDER: Any donations or fees paid to St. Mary Parish or St. Mary School should be marked as such and a notation on the memo line for the type of payment. For example, Pay to: St. Mary Church Memo: Memorial Donation. NEVER make out a check to an individual person and assume it is going to the church or the school accounts. Examine your returned/cancelled checks. They should have been deposited to a St. Mary Roman Catholic Church Corporation Account or St. Mary School. DYNAMIC CATHOLIC PRAYER Additional copies of this prayer are available at the church exits. Please take one home for your own personal daily prayer and take one for a friend or family member who might need a prayer booster this year. For more information about the DYNAMIC CATHOLIC movement, visit their website at dynamiccatholic.com and/or read The Four Signs of a Dymanic Catholic by Matthew Kelly. Knights of Columbus Squires’ Blanket Drive We will be collecting new or gently used blankets for those less fortunate in the Hartford area. Please consider donating to this cause and help someone stay a little warmer this winter. Your help is greatly needed and very much appreciated. A Collection Box will be located in the South entrance of the church. The collection will take place the next few weekends of January. The Newington Knights of Columbus Squires is composed of boys ages 10 thru 18 years old. If interested in joining the Squires, please contact Dick Losh at 860-667-0832. 3 Our next Town meeting will be held January 25th at 3 p.m. in the Church. The topic will be on increasing marketing efforts and volunteerism in the parish so that we can plan more events and programs. Please bring your ideas to this important meeting! In an effort to bring together young families we are going to have FAMILY GAME NIGHT. Families please bring your favorite board games and some snacks to share as we come together for a fun night out as families of Christ on Friday night, January 30th 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. As always if you have questions and concerns please contact one of our ministry members. The names and contact information of our members is available on the website or just speak to us after Mass. Winter Reminders: Please be cautious when the weather conditions are messy. Play it safe, stay home and watch the televised Mass on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. on WTXX. If the governor has closed the roads, STAY HOME and be safe. Our snow removal team does their best to stay ahead of the accumulation, but sometimes that is not possible. Please only walk where a path has been shoveled. Use the handrails and watch where you are stepping. Like us on FACEBOOK to get the latest updates and announcements about cancellations and/or postponements. If you have the cold or the flu, please stay home and rest. You should also refrain from handshakes at the sign of peace. Simply nod or wave to the person near you and wish them God’s Peace. Diaconate Inquiry Sessions: The Archdiocesan Office of Diaconate Formation is now preparing to admit a new class of candidates for the Diaconate in the fall of 2015. Any Catholic man between the ages of 35 and 60 who may be interested in the Diaconate is encouraged to speak to his pastor. Two inquiry sessions will be held at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield on Sunday, March 8th and Sunday, March 22nd from 2 -4 p.m. Both sessions must be attended, and spouses must also attend. Please call the office at 860-242-5573 no later than March 2nd in order to pre-register. Mindful of those who are sick, please pray for the following people, and those who care for them.
