January 4 - St. Stephen Catholic Parish

St. Stephen Parish
January 18, 2015
Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
... The two disciples heard what he
said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned
and saw them following him and said
to them, “What are you looking for?”
They said to him, “Rabbi” - which
translated means Teacher -, “where
are you staying?” He said to them,
“Come, and you will see.” So they
went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that
day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon
Peter, was one of the two who heard
John and followed Jesus. He first
found his own brother Simon and
told him, “We have found the Messiah” - which is translated Christ -.
Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus
looked at him and said, “You are
Simon the son of John; you will be
called Cephas” - which is translated
Peter.
John 1:35 - 42
Our Mission Statement
We are a Catholic Community that is called by God to follow Jesus Christ. We believe that we are called
to worship God together, to lead God's people along the path of hope laid down by Jesus, to share his message through preaching, through the education and formation of our people, young and old, and through caring service and sensitive outreach to those in need

For over a century, St Patrick's Seminary and University in Menlo Park, California has been preparing
men for the Roman Catholic priesthood. This year

Dear Parishioners of St. Stephen;
The Christmas Season is concluded for another year. Last week’s Feast of the Baptism of the Lord brought the Christmas celebration to a close (and you thought it
had been over for a long time now!). So many people to thank, from those who
decorated the church to those who now are challenged to “take it all down.’ That’s
the more thankless job. I’m grateful to you all. Now we enter “Ordinary Time”,
named not for a lack of feasts but for the numbers given to each Sunday, the
“Ordinals.” It’s an in-between time (but nothing “ordinary” about it) as we ready
for the Lenten season coming in February...Ash Wednesday is February 18.
Before then we will celebrate with one another at our annual Crab Feed. Come one. Come all. Enjoy
some delicious crab and some captivating company. The price is right, the crab delicious, and the
company unparalleled. It’s another chance for us to come together as a parish community to get to
know one another and for deepening our relationships. It’s a celebration of our exceptional parish
community.
The Lenten season, that annual retreat, is soon to be upon us. As usual, once again we will have four
Lenten soup evenings. All are invited to make a soup of your choice and share with your fellow parishioners. Then we listen to a speaker. This year I have invited someone to address a challenging
topic, one which will prove to be somewhat provocative but so necessary for today’s day and age.
The speaker will address “Islam.” As the world struggles to find ways to build bridges between east
and west, we need first to increase our knowledge and awareness of this ancient religion. We will
come with open minds and hearts to learn about one of the world’s great religions.
With 1.6 billion adherents, Islam comprises the second largest world religion with 23.2% of the
world’s population. Christianity counts 2.2 billion followers at 31.5% of the world’s population. Too
often we western folk simply and unfairly associate Islam with terrorism. Before we settle for such
simplistic judgments, let’s first learn and deepen awareness and an appreciation.
Wishing you and your family God’s continued blessings, I am sincerely yours in Christ,
your pastor
Father Paul F. Warren

Children’s Offerings
We are inviting the children of the parish to be involved in the 9:30 am Mass on Feb 8th. We are
asking the children to bring with them to Mass that day an offering for the poor. During the preparation of the gifts, the children will be invited to bring their offerings to the front and place them
in a large basket. We want to give the children an experience of being part of the liturgy and also
teach them our core Catholic Values of care for the poor. The children’s offerings will be given to
the Missionaries of Charity (Mother Teresa’s Sisters) who will use the offering in their work with
the homeless in San Francisco.
We hope to have two of the sisters join us at mass on Feb 8th. The suggested offerings are: food,
socks (new only), diapers.
If you have any questions please contact Deacon Rory at 415-306-3788.
