They told the story of The Nativity in prayer and song. Everyone sang Christmas Carols that followed the story. It was a wonderful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. Grieving the loss of a loved one? On the first Saturday of every month at the 8:30 am Mass, the liturgy will be offered for those who have suffered a loss. We will remember our loved ones in a special way, and an optional fellowship will be held after the Mass, sponsored by the Bereavement Ministry of St. Christopher. “Notes” from Phil & Amy The Holy Family Today’s (options) First Reading: Sir 3: “He who honors his father atones for sins, he stores up riches who reveres his mother.” And our Responsorial Psalm: Ps 105 The Lord remembers his covenant forever. Our Second Reading: Col 3: “Bear with one another and forgive each other as soon as a quarrel begins.” Our Gospel Acclamation: Col 3: “May the peace of Christ rule in your hearts; and the fullness of his message live within you.” And our Gospel: Lk 2: “The child grew up to maturity and he was filled with wisdom.” On the third week of Advent I mentioned that our Psalm was a “Canticle” for that Sunday’s scripture, the Canticle of Mary. Well, today’s Gospel incorporates Simeon’s canticle, the Nunc Dimittis. Canticles are “hymns” from the Bible not found in the book of Psalms. There are both Hebrew Testament and Christian canticles in the Bible. Christian canticles include the Magnificat (Canticle of Mary), the Benedictus (Canticle of Zechariah) and the Nunc Dimittis (Canticle of Simeon). On the first week of Advent, we had a psalm that Amy and I composed the music for about 10 years ago. It was because we were trying to create a particular mood for Advent that we didn’t feel was offered in other Psalm 80’s musical content that we reviewed. Today, we have an option to hear Psalm 105 which only appears in the lectionary once in a three year cycle (we’re in cycle B) and it’s found in very few hymnals. The antiphon says it all: “The Lord remembers his covenant forever.” Now I think it’s important to note on this Feast of the Holy Family that we have to keep a broad sense of what constitutes a family. Many families consist of a single parent possibly with one child, or a homeless person, or even two friends. All those who are baptized in Christ are part of the Christian family. Again the antiphon says it all: “The Lord remembers his covenant forever.” Marriage is like the covenant. It is a model from parents to children saying, just like in baptism, “We will always be here for you.” Many hymns incorporate the text from Psalm 105. “For the beauty of the Earth” and “All Creatures of Our God and King” come to mind. Today let all families take inspiration and courage from Jesus, Mary and Joseph – The “Holy” Family. The Gospel story that Luke alone records is the only one regarding Jesus in his “youth” years. It reminds us that he grew into his identity as one who would speak and act with authority, having matured in wisdom, age and favor before God and all people. His family was the very place where this happened. So here is a prayer for today: “Most Holy Trinity, look with compassion on all families where love and understanding have long been absent. In your merciful kindness, bring peace, comfort, and joy to all members this day.” Amen. This Tuesday, please join our St. Christopher Music Ministry in church at 7pm as we present “Heralds of Joy” and celebrate the 6th Day of Christmas. Be part of a great Christmas season tradition. Join St. Christopher Parish in celebrating the Octave of Christmas, January 1st, when we celebrate the Motherhood of Mary, and also, a World Day of Peace & Justice. The Immediate Prayer Connection was established at St. Christopher Parish in 1991 and since that time the daily request for prayers have been passed along to the many “pray-ers” who know the importance of asking God to be with His children in the many difficult times and joyous times in their lives. At any time that you need prayers for yourself, family or friends just pick up the phone and call the Parish Office at (708) 388-8190 and make your request. If you think that you would like to become one of the “pray-ers”, call the Parish Office and ask for Barb and we will add your name to our list. Pray-ers are contacted on a two week basis or you can give your email address and you will be contacted. Prayer is comforting! Prayer is powerful! For where two or three are gathered together in my name there I am in the midst of them. Thank you for the generous gifts you provided to those people in need and the homebound this Christmas season. It was greatly appreciated by all. God bless you. “Give and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38. PRO-LIFE HOLY HOUR You are invited to a Pro-Life Holy Hour on Friday, January 2nd at 7:00pm in St. George Church (6707 W. 175th Street in Tinley Park). We will pray before the Blessed Sacrament for true respect for all human life from conception to natural death. Please come to pray that our nation will be converted to a culture of life. You would have an enjoyable evening with your classmates and many of the basics of putting together a reunion would have already be done for you. If you have an interest in coordinating a reunion for your class, please contact Christine Herrera Cantlin at (708) 388-8514 or Paul Brouch at (708)743-5278 by January 10th, 2015 and we will guide you through the process.
