Things Above from Fr. Bilot
A Blessed and Joyous New Year!
As we embark on this New Year,
we should take this opportunity to
reflect on the previous year to see
how the love of God unfolded in our
lives. We always seem to be preoccupied with the stuff of life and
may miss how God is present to us.
When the Wise Men looked up and
saw the star, it intrigued them. They started to remember
the words of the Prophets about a Messiah to be born.
They searched, travelled and prayed and, with
persistence, arrived in Bethlehem. To their amazement,
they found the Christ Child! In gratitude, they bestowed
gifts on the King of Kings, which represented their
admiration and profound love for the Lord. And, to think
that if they never looked up, and if they didn’t reflect on
the Scriptures, they would never have found their hearts
desire!
We, too, need to look up from what we are doing and
gaze toward our God, the giver of all life. We turn toward
God when we do what the Wise Men did. They wanted to
know who the Christ Child was and wanted to experience
his presence in their lives. And, so should we!
In this New Year, I pray that we may prioritize our
lives so that they are ordered toward God and not the
world. What spiritual reading could we embark on to
learn more about our faith and our spiritual relationship
with the Lord? What time each day will we “fall on our
knees” in prayer to the Lord, just sharing our life and its
experiences, trusting that God will guide us to the Light?
In what way will we reach out to others, especially in our
own neighborhood, so that we may build bridges of hope?
What do each of us need to do to fall deeper in love with
the Holy Eucharist?
There are some great books that help us enter into the
mystery of the Eucharist. Author Scott Hahn, a convert to
the faith, has written excellent books on our faith and the
Sacraments. We also have our DC Book Club that meets
once a month. The next gathering is Tuesday, January
13 at 7:00 PM.
And, don’t forget our Faith Formation Nights! We
have a guest speaker coming from California on Sunday
evening, January 25, to share his ideas about faith and
happiness. Please see the Infant for details. We have so
many ways to help us look up and search for deeper
meaning into our faith. Please come and partake. Feed
from the manger of our Lord here at Church of the Divine
Child!
As we continue to appreciate all that the Lord has
given to us, I once again want to thank everyone for their
generosity in giving during this holy time of the year. The
food and gifts for needy families, coats/hats/gloves and
Page 3
monetary donations were certainly very much
appreciated. Many tears were shed as we helped
those families who needed some assistance this
year. In fact, last year, we helped a family in need
and, this year, they are doing better so they gave to
help others. What a blessing! Finally, I want to
thank everyone for your generosity to us priests.
The delicious goodies, cards and gifts are also
such a blessing. We sincerely thank you!
In Gratitude,
Fr. Jim Bilot
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea,
in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from
the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
“Where is the newborn king of the Jews?
We saw his star at its rising and have come
to do him homage.”

Commentary
O COME LET US ADORE HIM!
January 8: Holy Hour for
Persecuted Christians
At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday
January 8, we will be having a Holy
Hour of Adoration before the
Blessed Sacrament for persecuted
Christians (including those who are
being persecuted by ISIS-ISIL in Iraq and Syria) in
the Church. Near the end of the Holy Hour we will
hear a short testimonial from an Iraqi Catholic who
has had first-hand experience with the persecutions
that are taking place in Iraq at the hands of ISIS.
During this Holy Hour of Adoration we will be
praying for the persecuted Christians in Iraq, but we
will of course also be praying for everyone who is
being persecuted in the world today.
As many of you saw on the news this past
December, four Christian children in Iraq (all who
were under the age of fifteen) were beheaded by ISIS
for not denouncing the Name of Jesus Christ. These
four brave young martyrs chose to die rather than
denounce the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ! Before they were murdered it was reported
that these four brave children stated to ISIS that, “we
love Yeshua [Jesus], we have always loved Yeshua.”
Now let us show our love for Jesus and for our
persecuted brothers and sisters by attending the Holy
Hour on January 8th here at the Church of the Divine
Child!
After the Holy Hour we will have the opportunity
to learn more about what is going on in Iraq and
have some refreshments with some of our Chaldean
Catholic brothers and sisters in the gathering space.
Prayer is powerful…especially prayer before our
Lord Jesus in the Eucharist. Our prayers will help
those who are being persecuted throughout the
world. Please be a part of this community prayer for
those who need it the most!
Adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament
“It was not until 1973, when we began our daily
Holy Hour that our community started to grow
and blossom.” ~Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta
Please visit our Lord in our chapel any day or
time or come to Tuesday Exposition in the church
from 9am to 7pm. For more information, please call
Dina at 734-718-2873 or email at [email protected].

The Epiphany of the Lord
"They departed for their country by another way."
Things were different now. An encounter with the baby
Jesus changed the Magi. Before finding the child, they
had made a secret alliance with a worldly king, Herod.
But after seeing this infant resting in the arms of Mary,
their allegiance shifted. Now they became servants of
the little Lord Jesus. They had a kind of conversion through their
encounter with Christ, and they knew that they could no longer serve the
whims of a wicked ruler.
We call this Sunday "Epiphany" because that's what the three wise men
had: an epiphany, a moment of realizing the truth about God. In this
moment these three men--kings that they were--"prostrated themselves
and did homage" to the King of Kings. Then they went home by a
different route, undoubtedly as different men. Now, their own authority as
worldly leaders took on a new character. Now, they were men who served
a power greater than themselves. As it was prophesied in the Old
Testament reading from Isaiah, even kings would walk by the "shining
radiance" of the Lord.
Let us ask ourselves today how the Epiphany of the Lord can redirect us.
What worldly allegiances have we made that need to be changed? Are we
servants of our neighbors' good opinion or of the power of money? Are
we secretly aligned with popularity or prestige? No matter what "rules"
our hearts, we are invited to change our direction. We are invited to
encounter the little Lord Jesus and offer ourselves to his gentle and loving
guidance. After all, his is a kingship of concern for us. As today's psalm
says, this King "shall rescue the poor when he cries out, and the afflicted
when he has no one to help him."

Holy Humor
According to a news report, a
certain private Catholic school was
recently faced with a unique
problem. A number of 12-year-old
girls were beginning to use lipstick
and would put it on in the ladies
room. That was fine provided it
was of a natural or neutral skin
tone, but after they put on their
lipstick, they would kiss the mirror
leaving dozens of little lip prints.
Every night the maintenance man
would remove them; and the next
day the girls would put them back.
Finally, the principal, Sister Mary,
decided that something had to be
done. She called all the girls to the
bathroom and met them there with
the maintenance man. She
explained that all these lip prints
were causing a major problem for
the custodian, who had to clean
the mirrors every night (you can
just imagine the yawns from the
little princesses).
To demonstrate how difficult it had
been to clean the mirrors, Sister
Mary asked the maintenance man
to show the girls how much effort
was required. He took out a longhandled squeegee, dipped it in the
toilet, and cleaned the mirror with
it. Since then, there have been no
lip prints on the mirror.
There are teachers......
And there are educators!
Los Reyes Magos
While most children in the United States are accustomed to receiving gifts on Christmas Day, in many Hispanic
cultures, it is Epiphany, or the Day of the Three Kings, when gifts celebrating the birth of Christ usually
appear. On the night of January 5, hay and a bucket of water are left outside the house for the camels who
carry the Magi. A box or old shoes are put under the bed in which the Wise Men will leave gifts for the
children. On the evening of January 6 families gather for dinner, and cut into the rosca de reyes, a ringshaped sweet bread decorated with candied fruit. Baked inside is a small figure of baby Jesus. Whoever finds
the figure in his or her piece will host the final feast of the Christmas season, el día de la Candelaria on
February 2. On that day new clothes are presented to enrobe the figure of baby Jesus in the Nativity scene of
the family or the church.

Men discerning a call to the priesthood will have the
opportunity to spend four days experiencing seminary life next
week, thanks to your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal.
The archdiocesan Office of Priestly Vocations will offer a
discernment weekend at Sacred Heart Major Seminary from
January 8 to 11, and again from March 19 to 22.
These firsthand, up close and stress-free looks at seminary life
are offered for men who are high school seniors to 55 years old.
Besides seminary life, the discernment weekend will focus on
the pillars of formation: spiritual, human, intellectual, and
pastoral. These four presentations are the foundation of the
seminary formation program. For more information about
CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to

A Mini-Series on the Order of
the Mass by Msgr. Kasza
A Liturgical Moment:
Preparation of the Altar
The liturgy of the Eucharist has several parts to it. Following
the Prayers of the Faithful, the altar is prepared (akin to
“setting the table”) and the people bring up the gifts to be
offered. In the early centuries of the Church, animals and
vegetables were offered in addition to bread and wine. Today,
only bread and wine are brought forward to the altar and the
priest presents them to God asking that they (along with the
people participating in the Mass) be set apart in order to be
transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ. The purpose
of these ritual elements is to help us to more fully enter into
the Eucharistic celebration.

THE INFANT JESUS OF PRAGUE TRIDUUM
St. Albert the Great, 4855 Parker St in Dearborn Heights,
conducted by Father Ben Luedtke, a dynamic and dedicated
Priest. Devotion to the Infant Jesus of Prague goes back to the
1600’s, when a Carmelite Priest in Prague, while praying
before a statue of the Infant Jesus, heard these words. “The
more you honor Me, the more I will bless you.” Many miracles
and graces worldwide have been attributed to devotion to the
Infant Jesus of Prague.
