Bilot Remember last summer, I was commenting on our “resident” hawk who likes to dine in our backyard on occasion? Well, we have another fairfeathered friend who is lodging here for a couple of days during his migration. We have a beautiful heron who has been stopping by our fish pond to see if there is a meal available. I am not sure if he was able to secure a couple (ok...a few) fish for his lunch or dinner, but he has graced us with his presence. We are blessed to have beautiful grounds for God’s creatures to explore and take advantage of our gracious hospitality! See page 12 in The Infant. Last week, Tim Horst and I had an opportunity to read to the elementary school students during the celebration of National Reading Month (March). I do enjoy reading to the children, whether it's first grade or eighth grade. It seems that we all like to sit back and let someone tell us a story. And, if you don’t show the pictures to the students, you will certainly hear about it! As I reflected on my reading to the children, I realized that two of the books were about faith, Jesus and the great gift of Easter. I am so grateful that I was able to go into the school, read to the students, and not have to worry about what I say or do regarding my faith and religious beliefs. It is also very edifying to talk with our public school students during Religious Education classes so that they learn about the values of our beliefs and how to speak openly about our faith in the Lord. We sometimes tend to take our faith for granted. We need to remind ourselves constantly that attending Mass and professing our faith is a freedom. We are truly blessed in America, and I am grateful to our founding Fathers that they established a land where we can pursue our faith in freedom and security. May we always attend Mass in gratitude for these blessings received. As we enter into the final weeks of Lent, many people will use this time to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I urge everyone to avail themselves of receiving this Sacrament. We have confessions on Tuesday at 6:30 PM, Saturday at 3:00 PM and after the 4:30 Mass. We will also have additional confessions on Monday, April 14 at 11:30 AM and 7:00 PM. Blessings, Fr. Or, at least, it feels like it. Like many of you, I've been eagerly waiting for the spring weather. I did, however, really enjoy the snow and cold that we had this winter (the snow more than the cold.) It had been several years since we had a “normal” Michigan winter. Some would say, though, that this winter was hardly normal. I hope you kids took advantage of the snow by going sledding, skiing/snowboarding, building snowmen and snow-forts, and maybe even having a (playful) snowball fight—just not on parish property! The beautiful thing about Michigan is that by the time you're finally getting tired of the cold and snow, or by the time you can't stand the scorching heat and thick humidity, a change is coming. I am ready for it! I'm very excited to wear shorts, go swimming and fishing, and simply to go running without wearing a hat and gloves! (For the past week, thankfully, it's mostly been shorts and a t-shirt!) Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Baseball is back. Basketball is (sadly) over—for the Wolverines and Spartans, at least. ...And Easter is coming! The Lord's triumph over sin and death—for you! The Light of the world, the warmth of the Risen Son, the Fountain of living water, the peace and joy and glory of the risen Jesus Christ is coming... are you ready?! Tim The worship of the Eucharist outside of the Mass is of the highest value in the life of the Church. Please visit our Lord in our chapel any day or time or come to Tuesday Exposition in the church from 9am-7pm. Many parishioners have signed up to spend an hour with our Lord, but we are always in need of more adorers, especially Wednesday through Saturday evenings. With seminarian, Tim Horst Wednesdays at 7pm in the High School Learning Center Join us as we study and discuss the readings for the upcoming Sunday Mass. Feel free to come one week, several weeks, or every week! Jesus said to Saint Faustina: “When you go to confession, know this, that I am waiting for you in the confessional. I am only hidden by the priest, but I myself act in the soul. Here the misery of the soul meets the God of Mercy. From this font of Mercy souls draw graces solely with the vessel of trust. If their trust is great, there is no limit to My generosity.” (Diary of St. Faustina, VI 6-7) “The Infant” Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn Page 5 Father Bechill’s Orations “Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, take and eat; this is my body.” Matthew 26:26 In two weeks, we will make our yearly endeavor into Holy Week. Holy Week is Holy because Jesus accomplished the great gift of our salvation. In his Incarnation as man, Jesus gave us redemption, which is the call to be holy. Jesus not only redeems, he saves. There is something more God wants to give us – his very life. Bread is the very staff of life. Without food we cannot live. Just as we nourish the body (or starve it), we nourish the heart and soul. In the Last Supper, Jesus is celebrating the Passover Meal with his Apostles. He is, at the same time, celebrating the memorial that Moses imparted to the children of Israel and doing something new – Jesus is the bread and wine of this meal. You may have run across folks who are rather anti-ritual, because it involves the lived tradition of people. The “blessing” that Matthew refers to in the above quote is the Passover Rite of Israel. Jesus does not just “make this up.” The Passover has been present ever since Israel was lead out of Egypt. Jesus commanded us to “do this in memory of him.” He has renewed and fulfilled the promises given to our forebears. Jesus invites us to be participants in this new rite. This reality flows out of our Churches and into the world. This “memory” cannot just be enacted… it must flow out of our Church and out of us! Jesus breaks bread and he also willed that he be broken. The death of Jesus is our death to sin. Our conformity to the Cross of Jesus is his life poured into us. The Resurrection is the final victory over every sting of death and corruption. In the face of death, even Jesus is deeply troubled and crushed in spirit - that is what John tells us in today's Gospel about the raising of Lazarus. As we round out this Lent, take time to enter into this gift of holiness. I hope Holy Week will be Holy for you. ! ! !"#$%&$'()*"+*$,"$-"+),($./""-$ ϭϬ͘zŽƵǁŝůůŐĞƚũƵŝĐĞΘĐŽŽŬŝĞƐ ϵ͘/ƚ͛ƐĞĂƐLJĂŶĚĐŽŶǀĞŶŝĞŶƚ ϴ͘zŽƵǁŝůůǁĞŝŐŚůĞƐƐ ϳ͘/ƚ͛ƐƐŽŵĞƚŚŝŶŐLJŽƵĐĂŶƐƉĂƌĞ 6. Matt Dzieciuch 278-2391 Jim Quinn 274-0952 SCRIP NOTICE NO SCRIP ORDERS THE WEEKS OF APRIL 7 & APRIL 14 Page 8 “The Infant” Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn Meet Catechumen Greg Wojcichowski: Joining the RCIA has been one of the best things that I have ever experienced. Since joining I have learned to become one with God and learned a great deal about the mystery of the church. I am excited for the day when I can fully participate in the Eucharist and all that the church offers. Thank you to Samantha, Father Bilot, Father Bechill, and my sponsor Megan for making this the best possible experience. Meet Candidate Anita Guajardo: I thank all my family for being a living model of faith and for embarking on this journey with me. Their values, commitment and caring hearts have helped make this experience a beautiful one, and have helped inspire me to strengthen my spiritual life. May God bless you all for your commitment to walk with me, leading by example when the path wasn't so clear, waiting for me when difficulties slow my pace, and offering to fly with me when my spirit wants to soar. Your kindness and loving hearts will always be gratefully treasured. Meet Catechumen Jessica Mortier: I started taking RCIA because I had a thirst for knowledge and I saw the joy that God brings people. Since I began my journey, I have felt this joy firsthand. Seminarian, Tim Horst, also asked us what brought us here and how we feel it’s impacting our lives now. I want to be more involved with my faith and I want God in my life. I did not have a religious upbringing. I have always felt that something was missing in my life, and this just feels right. There were times I can remember when I was young I used to try and pray, but I never had any guidance, and I yearned for something beyond my understanding. I now believe that yearning I felt was coming to know God. I look forward to accepting Jesus into my heart and I am so excited and happy with these experiences that are bringing me closer to knowing & loving God. I believe it’s been impacting my life in such a positive way. My experiences learning who God is and what Jesus did for us has me questing ‘being the best version of myself’ in a new light. I’m so thankful for my boyfriend, and sponsor, and the Bustamante family for sharing the love of God with me. I often wonder where I might be on this spiritual journey without them and I don’t know that I can say I’d be headed on it. They have all supported me and for that I am so appreciative. Meet Candidate Sean Horvath RCIA has been very informative and helpful in my journey to becoming a confirmed Catholic. My faith and knowledge of Catholicism is continuing to grow with the help of RCIA. Gaining knowledge in class on Tuesday nights and attending Mass on Sundays has really impacted my life as a Catholic and has been a true blessing. I am looking forward to becoming a confirmed Catholic so my relationship with Jesus can continue to grow and I can accept the sacrament of Marriage with my Fiancée, Bonnie Ballog, my sponsor who has been a huge help in the process. Meet Catechumen Tyler Greene: I joined the RCIA program after my introduction to the Catholic faith by my fiancée, Justina Nagorka. Constantly moving to cities growing up, I never felt like I had been part of a larger community practicing one faith. As I progress through the program, I feel more confident in my beliefs and abilities to be a representative of the Church and its teachings. When the program concludes, I hope to use the knowledge I have gained to further cultivate my spiritual development as well as influence those around me in a positive light. “The Infant” Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn Page 9 DIVINE CHILD HIGH SCHOOL OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS Congratulations Laura Nemes and Coach Tony Mifsud! The Catholic community in southeast Michigan will continue to give witness to the truth that marriage is between one man and one woman, which is the foundation for the flourishing of society.” -- Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, March 21, 2014 Reversing the will of Michigan voters, a federal judge recently struck down Michigan law confirming the truth that marriage is an institution between one man and one woman. This decision is part of an ongoing legal process by which same-sex couples can be “married” in our state. Archbishop Vigneron and Michigan’s diocesan bishops have come to the defense of traditional marriage, speaking collectively through the Michigan Catholic Conference, the Church’s public policy voice in the state. As the case continues to move through the courts, the bishops have emphasized their opposition to legislatively or legally redefining marriage, while stressing that “it is necessary to state clearly that persons with same-sex attraction should not be judged, but rather accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity” To learn more, visit the Michigan Catholic Conference online at www.micatholic.org. Tuition Assistance Program (PSAS) Who can apply? Catholic Children (K - 12th grade) residing in the six counties of the Archdiocese of Detroit are eligible to apply. The PSAS form is also used for Divine Child financial need based grants. Families will not be eligible for DC assistance unless the PSAS form is submitted. New this year: The pastor’s signature, of the family’s home parish, is now required on the PSAS form. Please allow extra time to obtain his signature. How Do I Apply? The PSAS form can be obtained at the Archdiocesan website at www.aod.org. Click on Catholic Schools and then on Tuition Assistance. Forms are also available at the Rectory Office and must be completed and mailed to PSAS along with a check for $22, to cover the cost of the evaluation and processing. The Archdiocese of Detroit will notify families who qualify for the grants in July. Application Deadline: April 15, 2014.
