CAL POLY POMONA MUSIC DEPARTMENT 2015 AUDITION REQUIREMENTS MUSIC MAJOR: MUSIC INDUSTRY STUDIES OPTION Background information: 1. All students who wish to pursue the Music Industry Studies option must go through the complete audition process for acceptance to Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in Music (Music Industry Studies option). 2. The curriculum requires that all music majors have competence in music theory, performance, musicianship and music history. Therefore, to be accepted into the program, students must be able to demonstrate a level of competence and potential in the areas of music theory and performance. We are looking to evaluate where the student is at this time and what potential s/he may have. Audition Information: Auditions will take place on Friday, February 6, 2015 at Cal Poly Pomona University. All applicants will receive an email indicating how to sign up for the audition. Emails will be sent in December, 2014. All auditions, live or recorded, shall be 5-10 minutes long. Prospective music majors (MIS option) will complete a music theory placement test as well as perform an audition.. The performance should demonstrate accurate rhythms, pitch control, and interpretive awareness. Live auditions may also include sight-reading. Be prepared to perform the following: 1. Scales/Etudes Instrumentalists - two octave major scales in different registers. Vocalists - one octave major scale (ascending and descending) in a comfortable range. Percussionists that do not play mallets must perform one solo or etude from Delecluse, Albright, Cirone, Peters, Goldenberg, or equivalent. 2. Two contrasting musical works of your choosing (one that demonstrates technical facility and one that is more lyrical in character). 3. Opening phrase of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." (Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, How I wonder what you are.) You will be asked to sing it in your comfortable range. Online submission For those for whom traveling is prohibitive, we will allow you to submit a video YouTube link that satisfies all four elements of the required audition materials (scales, performance pieces, singing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and the theory exam). We prefer that you audition in person, but this option is available for those who have extenuating circumstances.
