ALL-DISTRICT JAZZ ENSEMBLE INFORMATION
Please carefully read the following information for the 2014 TDBDA All-District Jazz Ensemble
All-District Jazz Weekend
April 25-26 on the campus of Western Kentucky University (exact schedule TBA)
The audition procedures are:
1. There is a required registration form.
2. $5.00 fee per audition must be included with the registration form and recording.
3. Audition forms, money, and recording are due no later than March 5, 2014
4. Students will need to make every effort to perform audition materials with the play-a-long tracks
from the audition books.

REGISTRATION
Send one completed registration form including all students from your school. If a student is auditioning on more
than one instrument, he/she must be included for each instrument on the registration spreadsheet, and pay the
$5.00 fee for each instrument. Please send one check from your school booster account (made payable to
TDBDA) to cover the amount for all of the registration fees combined. Registration materials are due by March
5, 2014.
AUDITION MATERIALS
1. Scales- Play a chromatic scale from the lowest note in your range to the highest note in your range. Then play
Concert F Major, Mixolydian, and Dorian scales up to the ninth and back down in a swing style.***
2. Etudes are taken from “Jazz Conception” by Jim Snidero; Advance Music
Each student will perform “Proxy” with the accompaniment CD (only mm. 1-first note of 33)
Piano, Guitar, and Vibes players-Play the etude as written. Also, comp the chord changes to the
etude from the beginning up to measure 17.
Bass players- Perform the etude as written. Also, walk a bass line on the chord changes up to measure
17.
Drummers- Perform the etude as written. Also, play 8 measures of medium swing, fast swing, bossa
nova, and rock with fills as desired. Tempo is quarter note=120 except fast swing (QN=176)
Saxophone players- Perform the etude as written for ALTO SAX, TENOR SAX, or BARI SAX. If you
wish to audition on multiple instruments, you must fill out a form for each and pay the $5.00 fee for
each.
Trumpet players- Perform the etude as written. To be considered for LEAD TRUMPET, see the
information below. If you are auditioning only as a section player and not for lead, simply perform the
etude.
Trombone players- Perform the etude as written. To be considered for LEAD TROMBONE, see the
information below. If you are auditioning only as a section player and not for lead, simply perform the
etude. To be considered for BASS TROMBONE, play the excerpt on BASS TROMBONE.
3. Improvisation (optional)- All Instrumentalists are encouraged to improvise. Perform the melody uploaded to
the Third district website twice and solo for two choruses along with the audio track. This will not help or hurt
the audition score.
***Trombone and Trumpet players who would like to be considered for LEAD PARTS need to play the Concert
F Major, Mixolydian, and Dorian scales in two octaves.
Costs
Registration Fee- $5.00 per instrument
Folder Fee- $20.00 (If selected for the ensemble)- Payable to TDBDA after the band roster is set. Folders will be
mailed to the band director of your school.
