Merthyr Tydfil Global Village Report 2014
Background and overview
The Merthyr Tydfil Global Village Festival was established in 2005 to celebrate the
cultural diversity and heritage of Merthyr Tydfil. Initial discussion took place within the
Multi Agency Diversity Forum (MADF) – a partnership of local statutory and voluntary
organisations that meet to address issues of diversity and hate crime.
Global Village is in its very essence about participation: a coming together of the
various groups of people that live in the borough to celebrate diversity and difference.
The festival uses music, dance, art, voice and performance in an inclusive and
celebratory context. The array of activity means that there is something for
everybody; people can develop their creative side and widen their cultural horizons.
In the two weeks leading up to the festival workshops are held in various locations
throughout the borough.
This year, the 10th Global Village event, took place once again in the tremendous
setting of Cyfarthfa Park under various marquees shaped to form a ‘village’. The day
was deemed to be a great success with a constant flow of people throughout the day
at both the performances and workshops held on the day. Despite the poor weather
2,000 people took part. It was especially good to see the cross section of age-groups
taking part in both performances and workshop activity, from art and craft to dance,
music and song.
Attendance
Attendance was in the region of 2,000 people. In addition, 362 people attended preevent, workshops in REDHOUSE, Old Town Hall and in dance workshops in schools

The main event not only featured dance,
music and visual art from across the
globe but included food vendors and
stalls from many groups with a
community and diversity agenda.

Workshops prior to the event
Approximately 320 children were involved in the workshops prior to the event.
On the 11th March 2014 two primary schools in the Northern cluster of Merthyr Tydfil
began learning a dance choreographed by Scottish Ballet. The dance was inspired
by a selection of culturally diverse dance styles. The dance sessions were led by Cêt
Hâf and supported by Jên Angharad, both bilingual dancers.
Three additional schools engaged in learning the dance, culminating in 400 children
taking part in the dance workshops in the lead up to the Global Village festival.
Following a performance in the Engine house in Dowlais, 35 children – an
appropriate number for the size performance space, opted to perform during the
Global Village Festival. Their energy and enthusiasm proved a fitting opener for the
festival!

Feedback from our Performance Workshop Facilitators
There were 24 performances at the festival this year. Feedback was received either
directly from the performers themselves or their representatives.
Because I believe in sharing as an artist, and the only place I can share my artistic
experience is through performance which global village provide the place to share
and to learn from different cultural experience, this is important with its own value
global village festival makes me fill so proud to participate every year. (Sam Mbogo)
As is the nature of festivals, the weather is unpredictable and… the rain came down
before and during the event! This is something that can keep people away, but that
said, the atmosphere was cosy, warm and a variety of performances shared. Some of
the POSSIB participants and their parents were noticeably mesmerised by some of the
performances, this may suggest that they were engaged in performance that they had
maybe never have seen before… this in itself, makes the festival a worthwhile and
valuable event for the residents of Merthyr Tydfil. It also has value in that it
programmes performances by and for a diverse local community. Well done…
llongyfarchiadau… to all involved in the organising! (Nigel Mason)
To share Portuguese culture and have some fun! I’m so happy that Jamie accepted my
invitation to share the stage for a while, none of this would be possible if it wasn’t for
the (Focal Point) event in Soar. Thank you for opening the door! (Pedro Carvalho)
We love Global Village, the local feel, the variety of performances and the interaction
with visitors.
We really believe in Globalisation of Bharatanatyam & sharing it with people of
Wales.
Integration does a very good job for cultural & diversity awareness.
Raise profile of the Welsh language/culture
To bring beat-boxing to the world
To support a local event that celebrates diversity
Playing at Global Village is one of the highlights of our year. We’ve been doing it
now for approx. 4 years and look forward to it. (Captain Cat and the Sailors)

Some feedback from the performer’s evaluations forms is included below:
The Native Canadian hoop dance celebrates the world’s
diversity. I’m always happy to take part in events that
Global village run as they create community through
providing a stage for Merthyr Tydfil and Wales’ citizens
to show off their colours.
Diolch yn fawr iawn for the invite to take part, it really
does mean a lot. Really enjoy the event and can see the
benefits to the community spirit that exists in Merthyr.
Lots of people leaving the event smiling and with a
renewed faith in humanity (no understatement).
Diolch/muito obrigado/dziekuje
We would like to congratulate all involved in organising
and working hard to make Global Village a success with
so many nationalities participating.
The day was successful except the weather. I think
you’re doing everything right and if you’ll continue
doing just that the event will keep improving every year.
Playing at Global Village is one of the highlights of our

Global Village is a great event that connects people.
I thoroughly enjoy every global village, but especially
enjoyed this year as I got to perform. I was thrilled to be
a part of it and loved seeing so much talent in one place
on one day, all in MERTHYR TYDFIL! Wooohoooo!

FEEDBACK
Cwm Taff Community Health Council: We were able to engage with public and
obtain their views and experiences of the NHS services in the Cwm Taff area. We
were able to raise awareness of the work of the CHC amongst those that visited our
stand.
Sports Development: We got the children interested in attending clubs & classes in
Merthyr
MAGNET: It is always good to promote at different events as there is an opportunity
to talk to various people
Merthyr Valleys Homes: Good engagement opportunity and networking
Beverly Robbins: Sold EVERYTHING on my own stand & 100% of proceeds to
charity. This year I had donated items bought to me first because people know I am at
the Global Village each year. I raised £270.00 despite the weather. Many thanks to
Karen & the team. We are drawing in more & more people to our stand each year.
