About Irish Guide Dogs - Overview
At Irish Guide Dogs we help people live their lives as fully as possible with
mobility and independence. We provide life-changing services to people who
are vision impaired and to children with autism. In 2014 we aim to train 240
people - the highest number of people to date. This is building on our most
successful year in 2013 when we trained 197 people.
The cost of generating funds in 2012 was €1,098,000 (2011: €840,000)
which amounts to 27% (2011: 21.5%) of total expenditure. The increase
in costs relates to the investment in a direct marketing campaign to
recruit direct debit and cash donors as a complementary income stream
to our community fundraising. The return on investment (ROI) from this
investment is already exceeding its projected budget.
Fundraising is essential to the work of Irish Guide Dogs. We receive a relatively
low level of statutory funding and rely on the public to fund 80% of our costs.
It costs more than €4.5 million to run our organisation and the lifetime cost of
a Guide or Assistance Dog is €38,000. Every single dog that goes through our
programmes is trained to the highest possible standards.

Our statutory income has been cut significantly in recent years. However by
investing and resourcing fundraising initiatives we have protected front-line
services and even increased the numbers of people we train.
