A Prayer For The Victims of Bushfires
God
We join our prayer with people from across
our state and our nation in remembering
those affected by the bushfires.
We pray for those who lost their lives.
We also hold in prayer those who have lost
family, friends, homes and possessions
And struggle to rebuild their shattered lives
from the ashes.
We remember the many firefighters,
emergency personnel and volunteers who
worked, and continue to work, so hard
under such difficult circumstances.
As members of this Christian Community,
believing that Resurrection always follows
death
We ask God to grant new life to the people,
the families and the communities who
suffer and grieve.
Amen

From the Principal
Welcome back to the new school year
and what a wonderful start it has been.
This past week we welcomed back the
Class of 2013 high achievers to
celebrate their efforts. Our Dux
addressed the community as did the
Most Accomplished Senior VCAL
student. Their words were fantastic so
for our first Newsletter, I hand over to
them.
Yours Faithfully,

DUX Speech 2013
Good Morning Students, Teachers and
Parents;
A year ago, around this time, I sat at this
very assembly, watching last year’s Dux
give their speech. The only thing I can
remember is being so bored that I
completely zoned out and missed
everything they had to say to us. I really
regret not getting that advice for year
twelve, because my lack of
understanding required me to put in
more effort to make up for things I so
carelessly missed. It is of note that this a
year you cant get through without some
sort of help.
I have three main pieces of advice for
this year’s year 12s. first and foremost,
avoid wasting time. Whilst sometimes
you may not feel that you are wasting
your time, you are ultimately detracting
from your own success. From today you
have around 65 hundred hours until the
first exams starts. While that may seem
like a lot, it is constantly decreasing.
Taking consideration for healthy sleep,
socialization, and half of that time is
already gone. It’s a simple concept of
opportunity cost- time spent into
screwing around is just time detracted
from your own pursuits into the future.
Secondly, people would have you
believe that the year is stressful. It’s not
true. It is neither the of the world nor
deserving of the sense of dread that
fills so many people. With a good
amount of hard work, enthusiasm and
determination, the results of your work,
SACs and eventually exams will be
entirely worth the effort put in. To those
of you who have changed into a new
subject this year or are worried
because you missed out on a sixth
subject, I can tell you as a person who
experienced both of these that as long
as you commit yourself to your work,
you can still achieve your goals.
Finally, use your teachers. They are
dedicated guides to your journey
through year 12. And though you may
have come to take teachers in general
for granted in the last years, along the
path of year 12 they are one of your
lights to guide the way. Remember that
they are here for you, and that there is
no shame in asking for assistance. The
same goes for your own friends and
classmates- do not be afraid to ask for
help- while you are ultimately
competing with each other, you can
progress as a whole with some jolly cooperation..

From the Principal
To the year 11s, my only advice for you is to put in to this year,
as I promise you it will pay off for next year. The establishment
of a good work ethic is equally important to any results that
you receive in the oncoming years.
Thank you for this award; it is a great honor to be recognized
as the most accomplished Senior VCAL student.
I would just like to take a moment to say thank you to my
parents, teachers and friends, and congratulations to all the
award recipients today. These are the people you should take
inspiration from, and I am truly honoured to have worked with
them.
When I first started at CRC Sydenham I really didn’t know
what to expect, and what completing a VCAL course would be
like. I just knew I wanted to be a plumber and gain an
apprenticeship.
I guess my real point that I want to reaffirm to each and every
one of you students is to avoid regretting the actions you have
taken during the year, which itself entails making the most of
each passing moment. From each according to his ability, to
each according to his need, that no matter how naturally able
you are in your work, adding just a bit of effort can bring you a
long way.
Completing VCAL enabled me to learn the skills I needed to
enter the workforce and impress potential employers in an
adult environment. My senior project, which was planning a
Camp for all Senior students, allowed me to further build upon
these skills as I had to go through a panel interview and
communicate with the providers we were looking to book,
other students and key personal at the College. To be
successful as a senior student Jill asked us to push ourselves,
take on extra responsibilities and work using our own initiative,
and I’ve found that these skills are what really set you apart in
the workplace.
Thank you All.
Most Accomplished Senior VCAL Student Speech
To this year’s VCAL students, I wish you all success and good
luck in your chosen pathways. My advice is to really cherish
every minute at school, with your teachers and your friends as
it will very quickly be
over. And to strive to
be the best you can
be, go that extra mile
in class and aim to
impress and learn as
much as you can
during
work
placement. I was
lucky enough to gain
an
apprenticeship
during
my
work
placement
and
gained
valuable
skills and knowledge
that I now use every
day.
Finally on behalf of
my year level I wish
to thank all of our
teachers in VCAL
and a special thank
you to Jill and Jules
for all their hard work
over our two years in
VCAL.

RECOGNISING STUDENTS
Each fortnight in the College Newsletter, we recognise
the achievements of many of our 'quiet achievers',
those students who should be singled out for the
wonderful work they are doing. This fortnight we
recognise, celebrate and congratulate the following
Bradman Cluster
Jacob
Marino
Chang Cluster
Natasha
Vella
Over the summer break
Jacob continued his
employment in two casual
positions, one at the local
cinema and the other at a
fast food restaurant. Through
his hard work he has been
able to purchase a car. We
congratulate Jacob on this
work ethic and goal setting.
As Jacob transitions into his
final year of VCE he is
already beginning to plan his
study around his various
other commitments and set
his goals. He realises that
study must be his major
focus for the year. Through
his hard work and study this
year he will set himself up for
a
successful life and gain
access to future study.
Chang would like to
commend Natasha Vella
for a great start to 2014.
She has begun the year
with a positive outlook
recognizing the challenge
ahead but confident of
her ability to apply herself
in the subjects that she
has chosen. After visiting
America in the school
holidays, she was able to
see how people in
another country live
helping her to appreciate
the differences of people
around the world.
From the Principal
Dunlop Cluster
Dunlop is proud to congratulate
Carla Santalucia who was
nominated, and a finalist for,
Brimbank's Young Citizen of the
Year. Carla was nominated by the
College in recognition of her
voluntary work within the
community, including her
fundraising initiatives which
demonstrate compassion for the
marginalised. We also welcome
her to the Student Leadership
Group as Social Justice Captain
for 2014 and wish her well as she
commences work promoting
Project Compassion and
coordinating the Mother and
Daughter Dinner on March 13th at
Quatrefoils to mark International
Women's Day. Best of luck Carla,
we wish you well.
Adrian
Cristobal
Carla
Santalucia
MacKillop Cluster
O’Shane Cluster
Mackillop Cluster would like to
begin the school year by
congratulating Redmon Ortega
on his appointment as Year 11
leader of our Cluster.
Winton Cluster
Redmon comes into the roll
with much experience. Apart
from being College Captain at
CRC St Albans last year,
Redmond also completed a
successful year of study and
volunteer work at the Allara
Community Centre.
Redmon
Ortega
We look forward to Redmon
making similar contribution to
our Sydenham Community and
wish him all the best in his
pursuit of an Aeronautical
Engineering career.
From his first week here at CRC
Sydenham Adrian made a positive
impression being inclusive and
taking the role of chant leader.
The O’Shane community is very
blessed to have him, his caring
and considerate nature is
constantly shared with others,
ensuring that all who come into
contact with him are comfortable
and included. Adrian is always
willing to help those in need and
wanting to bring smiles to those he
comes in contact with. It is this
ability to always think of the
communal need and act as a team
player which makes him a valued
member of the O’Shane Cluster. It
was these attributes that made
him a worthy recipient of the
position of Year 12 Cluster Leader
for O’Shane. We wish him luck for
this year!
Winton would like to recognise
the continued success of Daniel
Fornito. In 2013, Daniel was
able to represent Victoria in a
high level of baseball and in
January 2014, he represented
Victoria at the Australian
National Under 18 Baseball
Championships, this year held in
Canberra. The team performed
well, achieving a third place
overall with Daniel highlighted as
one of the rising stars of the
competition.
We look forward to watching
Daniel’s sporting career continue
to develop throughout 2014.
