September 12th – Institute Newsletter

Public Image Campaign
One of the new features for the 2014 Zone
Institute is the inclusion of a program offered for District
Public Image Chairs. Lead by Rotary Public Image
Coordinators Charlie Thorp, from D5890, and Joe Foote,
D5570, sixteen attendees from across both Zones
attended the sessions.
RPIC Thorp kicked off events with an overview of
Rotary’s new look and how Clubs and Districts can
access this material at the Rotary Brand Central online.
Thorp also discussed some of the public image tools
available.
Following the break, Thorp and Foote facilitated
a Public Image Best Practices Panel with members
including: Leroy Alloway (5840), Debbie High (5930),
Valerie Hopkins (5450), Lynn Perez-Hewitt (5470), and
Michael D. Wailes (5440).
Members of the panel, who are current or immediate
past District Public Image Chairs, spoke about public
image initiatives and projects within their Districts and
the varying degrees of success they had experienced.
The panelists from very basic and high-level strategies
to some detailed information about specific projects
shared good information.
Following lunch, Rotary International General
Secretary, John Hewko, spoke to the group about
the biggest challenges/opportunities facing Rotary’s
public image. The End Polio Now campaign has great
opportunity for Rotary to take credit for eradication of
the disease. He stated that while the Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation were indeed big donors, it was
Rotary who took on the fight and who have the resolve
to see the fight through to the end.
Secretary Hewko said Rotary’s new grant model,
Future Vision, presented a great opportunity to increase
the organization’s work both locally and globally.
Hewko saw great value in leveraging the experience
and expertise of Rotarians to begin developing some
leadership around the six areas of focus and cited
a speaker series conducted recently in Evanston by

RPIC Foote facilitated an afternoon session on
publicizing an event and dealing with the media.
There was much discussion with the session
evolving towards a round-table discussion
with all the participants sharing advice and
experiences.
“I listen to the ideas coming out of this group
and think ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’” Thorp
said, “Y’all are on the right track and heading in
the right direction.” Foote added, “I’ve just been
really impressed with what has gone on here –
you’re gaining credibility in Rotary and in your
communities.”
Foote and Thorpe closed the day by
expressing how pleased they were with how
these sessions had progressed and urged all
attendees to fervently share the information they
gained with their respective clubs and District
leadership.

Governor ’s Blood Challenge
Presented by McCambridge & McDuff
Mary Ann McDuff District Governor Nominee for D5790 issued a “Blood
Challenge.” See the flyer they have prepared called Global Network for Blood
Donation: A Rotary Action Group. She and Mary McCambridge presented the
blood challenge.
The flyer details the challenge and how to conduct successful and effective
blood drive campaigns. See more information at www.ourblooddrive.org.
DGE Melina Osburn D5870 served as Master of
Ceremonies for Thursday’s luncheon. She introduced
DGE Bob Delavan D5470 who asked us to take a
moment to remember those we lost 13 years
ago and think about what the pledge means
to citizens of our country. DGE Betty
Frantum D5930 then offered an invocation.
John Donovan, a second generation
Rotarian and veteran, had our veterans of
Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom stand
and be recognized prior to introducing the
speaker, Mike McGovern.
Mike is a member of the Rotary Club
of South Portland and Cape Elizabeth in
Maine and brought greetings from Kathy Potter, his
President. He shared her Rotary moment, when the
entire club stepped up to help her husband, who had
suffered two strokes, complete his year as president.
His theme was that the support of each other at
the club level is essential to Rotary and that it is only
through collaboration on all levels that progress is
made. He cited the Rotary Club in the Phillipines that
took on polio in the mountains of the islands. Thus
began the World Polio Consortium of Rotary, WHO,
CDC, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with
countries around the world that continues the work to
eradicate polio. It is by working together with
others that this project will be completed.
Rotary Youth Exchange and Global Grants
are possible only because clubs and districts
worldwide collaborate over time to build strong,
stable programs that make a difference in our
world. He said it is most important to
get clubs to work together to resolve
differences and solve problems.
“Rotary unites leaders to exchange
ideas and take action.” Thus we

Tuesday evening, September 9th was a balmy
evening with a bit of drizzle, but the energy
level was high at The Lake House as DGE’s
and DGN’s gathered for their Friendship Dinner
hosted by their training leaders.
The training was
conducted by
PDG Charlie
Tegarden
and
PDG Glenda
Thomas for DGE’s and
PDG Mary
McCambridge and PDG Dan HImelspach for
DGN’s.
A great evening of fun and fellowship continued
on the 14th Floor at the Westin Hotel hosted
by D5450 DGE Kevin O’Connell and his Rotary
partner Kevin West and D5450 DGN Mary Kay
Hasz and her Rotary partner Earl Hasz.
Wednesday, September 10th was a full day of
training for the DGE’s and DGN’s with the day
kicking off with insightful and encouraging words
from our RI Director Greg Podd and Pam Podd
welcoming attendees and setting expectations
for OUR 2014 Rotary Institute.
Debra Fine added a bit of levity at lunchtime
with her talk on “The Fine Art of Rotary
Relationships”.
The day concluded with a great dinner and
entertainment by the Queen City Jazz Band and
fun and fellowship on the 14th Floor at the DGE
and DGN hospitality rooms.
Thursday, September 11th was another full day
of great training for the DGE’s and DGN’s. The
day concluding with the All Rotarian Dinner
and entertainment provided by comedian and
magician Michael Finney kicking off the 2014
Zone Institute.
Our DGE’s and DGN’s leave their GETS/
GNETS training, a bit wiser and more
connected to classmates. It is no wonder that
the DGE class of 2015-2016 will forever known
as WORLD Class. They will draw a line in the
sand and forever change the direction of the
clubs in their respective districts.

“Rotary in the Rockies” has been the
scene of rigorous training for the District
Governor class of 2016.
Under the able tutelage of Mary
McCambridge and Don Himmelspach,
we along with our spouse/partners have
reviewed such topics as, “Why be a
District Governor,” “Managing your Time,”
“Membership,” “Fiscal Management,”
“Developing District Leadership,” “District
Organization” and our Rotary Foundation.
Our spouse/partners have attended a
separate breakout session in which they
were able to exchange ideas and plans
about their future role as a very important
asset of Rotary International.
Mainly, we have come away with a
tremendous appreciation to be able to
serve under the banner of Rotary.
