The challenge now for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative is to eliminate the disease in the countries where it has never been stopped: Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria. PolioPlus Activities Districts 5360 (parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada) and 5370 (parts of Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories, and Saskatchewan) raised CA$350,000 as part of a joint campaign with the Alberta government, which matched that amount for a total of $700,000. More than 10,000 Rotary members in 30 countries raised over $190,000 as of April by participating in the World’s Greatest Meal to Help End Polio. The annual Global Swimarathon, held on 23 February to mark Rotary’s 109th anniversary, netted more than $100,000. In her new album, “Eve,” Grammy Award winner Angélique Kidjo honors the women of Africa and pays tribute to Rotary’s work to end polio worldwide. More than 90,000 people from 170 countries have joined the World’s Biggest Commercial. We are “this close” to having 100,000 participants and you can help us surpass our goal. Upload your photo by 30 June, if you haven’t already done so. Also, share the link to the commercial through social media. The Rotary Foundation Coordinator team is keen to assist where possible with training and to promote and support the programs, grants and fundraising efforts of The Rotary Foundation. ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION A big thanks to the Districts that supported the pre-release film fundraiser, “Monuments Men” in February and March. Of the Districts in my part of Zone 8 that reported their results to me, over $40,000 was raised for PolioPlus, and together with the rest of the Australian Districts, about $70,000 was raised in total. With the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation matching subsidy of $2 for every $1 we raised, this will result in over $210,000. I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can at the International Convention in Sydney 1-4 June. Come and visit the Coordinators’ Booth (site number 203, opposite the main Rotary exhibit) in the House of Friendship where I’ll be some of the time. The booth will be staffed by RRFCs, Rotary Coordinators, Public Image Coordinators and Endowment/Major Gift Advisors from around the world, so do come along and see some of the work going on, talk to the advisors and ask any questions you may have. See you there! Thank you for everything that each of you do. Congratulations go to two Districts in particular, D9550 and D9570, that raised almost $10,000 each, a great effort! The next step is to follow up and make sure the various funds have been sent in to The Rotary Foundation. Sadly I’ve seen a few times when this vital step has been overlooked.
