FPCIW Internship Position
Position Background and Description
The Front Porch Center for Innovation and Wellbeing (FPCIW) explores the innovative uses of
technology to empower individuals to live well, especially in their later years. FPCIW works
collaboratively with all stakeholders and in partnership with funding sources, researchers and
technology partners. The Intern will have an opportunity to participate in a variety of responsibilities
including leading the volunteers through the recruiting and clearing process and assist with the
coordination and weekly placement of volunteers. This person will report to the FPCIW project
manager.
The FPCIW Intern is expected to have transportation, a phone and be able to work in Burbank or one of
many project sites all over Southern California.
Job Functions
A.
OUTREACH
a. Promote and manage volunteer participation for areas such as:
i. Health-related, technology-based activities for a diverse population of senior
and disabled residents in the Los Angeles area through the Model eHealth
Community for Aging (MeHCA) project
ii. Mental health-related activities and events for the Telemental Health project
iii. Computer, mobile tablet, and other technology training and support for older
adults
iv. Project support and language translation (if applicable) needed for various
projects
b. Nurture the development of community leaders to support project activities
B.
TRAINING/SUPPORT
a. Schedule volunteer orientation, HIPAA training, and site orientation
b. Assist with preparation of training materials
c. Support scheduled training and workshop activities at the targeted communities
C.
ADMINISTRATION
a. Participate in bi-weekly team calls.
b. Create outreach and presentation materials for recruitment
c. Recruit volunteers through contacting organizations and student groups, attending
meetings and events, distributing materials and providing presentations
d. Coordinate volunteer processing and complete checklists
e. Document recruiting efforts and update volunteer status and availability

Coordinate the weekly assignments and placement of volunteers
Perform follow-up calls with volunteers and project participants
Distribute and collect expense report forms.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities





Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills; ability to verbally express ideas
assertively, clearly.
Ability to develop strategic direction and also parcel objectives into short-term tasks.
Excellent organizational skills to determine workload priorities to enable timely completion of
tasks; ability to work effectively and independently under pressure with a minimum of direction.
Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with others to secure necessary information and
cooperation from a variety of people.
Korean/English bi-lingual skills helpful.
Time Commitment and Pay
This is an unpaid, part-time volunteer position for 10-20 hours/week during regular workday hours, as
agreed upon between the Intern and the FPCIW project manager. The Intern’s needs are determined 1-2
weeks ahead of time and a certain amount of the work is “on-call.” This Internship opportunity is
available to start immediately.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional
journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business
correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to
questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest,
commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of
basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions
furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have a valid California Driver License. DMV record
must meet approval of Front Porch.

frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific
vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision,
depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of
those an Intern encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable

While performing the duties of this job, the Intern is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid
conditions, moving mechanical parts, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually
