The following Sunday is Father’s day. To foster children’s sense of self identity and help them to show their love to
their daddies, the educators encouraged the babies to create their own presents for Father’s Day, which are special
key holders. Children used their imagination and creativity to design the arts on the plain wooden board. Even the
younger babies were participating in using brushes. sponges to paint and explore with different colours and
textures. Anya saw me using pattern plates punch the star shapes from the paper and she wanted to try too. She
pushed hard and successfully cut a star out of the paper. Children used the stars to decorate the board to make it
look nicer. “More, please” Rachel used her manner to ask for more stars. Shreya pointed to the star and told the
names of the colours, “yellow, blue”. The young children transferred and adapted what they had learnt from one
context to another. Jackie, Rachel, Shreya, Lucas and others imitated me in using hammers to hammer in the nods.
They sat in a circle and took turns to use the hammers. They become aware of fairness in play with a group of peers.
I introduced a song “Daddy” (Tune of ‘Bingo’) to the children. We sat together and clapped hands to the beat. “D-ad-d-y” children cheered and smiled when we sang the song together. Imogen, Anya, Rachel, Jackie, Shreya learned
to sing and spell out daddy with me. They developed knowledgeable and confident self-identities and developed a
sense of belonging to groups through these experiences. They interact verbally and non-verbally with others for a
range of purposes and engage with a range of texts and gain meaning from these texts.
From the Father’s day celebration, children developed a sense of awareness of a range of community events and the
purpose of the Father’s day—to thank and show their love to the people who take care of them.
