Dade Reading Council’s Annual Books With Wings 2015 Young Authors Celebration Dade Reading Council is sponsoring their annual writing celebration for all school children in grades Pre-K through Grade 12, including public, private and home schools. This program encourages children to write an original picture book. Each Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First Grade student may submit a dictated book in the child’s own words. Each teacher may send two entries per class. Each teacher must sign their name only and their email on the book form. Home school may send one book for each child in the family. No class books or group books. One author per book. Some book title examples are: My Undersea Creatures ABC Book My Insects ABC Book My Vegetable ABC Book My Animal ABC Book The possibilities are endless. Choose one topic. That’s your title. And REMEMBER… Stay on your topic for each letter! Books With Wings Guidelines 1. 2. This picture book must be an ABC book. Each letter of the alphabet needs to have an illustration and 3-7 sentences about each letter. Format: Picture Book a. Number of Pages: 15-32 pages. b. Books less than 15 pages will be returned. c. Book Size may NOT exceed 9x12 inches. 3. Bookbinding must be fastened securely along one side with no sharp edges or exposed staples. Stapled books must have tape along the stapled edges covering sharp points. There are many vendors that offer blank (bare) books already bound. A duo-tang folder is fine. No 3-ring notebooks. 4. Outside Front Book Cover must include 4 things- title, author’s name, school name, and grade level. 5. The title page should include the same info as the front cover-title, author, grade, and school. 2 6. One page may be used to feature the author with a photo and info about the young author. Do not give any personal contact info on this “About the Author” page. If you want to include the illustrator’s name, please indicate which person was the author and which was the illustrator. 7. Each book MUST have a separate ENTRY FORM (see last page) Secure this form inside book with a paper clip. NO tape, NO staples, NO glue. Do not glue form to book. 8. Please do NOT put any academic grade or corrections in the book, even though the teacher may have given this as a required assignment. 9. Illustrations must be the original artwork of the author or a designated illustrator (friend or family member) or photographs. Illustrations may be copyright-free clipart or computer generated art. NO glitter, please. 10. The book’s illustrator will not receive an award certificate, autograph book, or the lapel pin, but may attend the Celebration with the author. 11. Text may be neatly handwritten in blue or black ink (NO PENCIL), typed, or computer generated. Do not send CD or other attachments. 12. Variations to a standard book may include a pop-up book, window flaps, and touchy-feelie materials such as cloth, yarn, etc. (NO glitter.) Any book that does NOT meet these 12 guidelines will not qualify for Books With Wings Celebration and will be returned to the author’s teacher. 3 A Gold, Silver or Bronze Level Award will be given for each book. All authors will receive an award certificate, an autograph book, a pen, a judge’s comment sheet, and a young author’s lapel pin. Award Criteria will be based on 3 areas/points. !Appearance and Illustrations !Details and Vocabulary !Correct Writing Conventions (grammar, spelling, sentence structure, capitalization, and punctuation) • An invitation to the Books With Wings Celebration with exact date, place, and time will be sent to each young author and the teacher by the beginning of February. • At the Celebration, Young Authors, their family, teacher, and friends will have an opportunity to see other children’s books, exchange autographs, and meet other student authors from all over Miami-Dade County at the Books With Wings Celebration. • All books will be returned ONLY to their authors at the Celebration or mailed to their teacher sponsor if the Young Author was unable to attend the Celebration. Books will be released only to the Young Author. The process of writing a book… plan/outline, first draft, revise, edit, and publish takes time.
