CE 375 Env. Eng. Hydrology
HOMEWORK
You will make groups to work on a class project. Each group will prepare a report of at most 15
pages (including the figures), and a power point presentation about one the following subjects.
1. Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
a. Definition of GIS
b. Components of GIS
c. Data models
d. Data layers
e. What can GIS do?
f. What type of analyses can be done with GIS?
2. Remote Sensing (RS)
a. Definition of RS
b. Photo interpretation
c. Electromagnetic spectrum
d. Radiation-target interaction (examples on some spectral signatures)
e. What is Active and Passive remote sensing?
f. Image characteristics in terms of spectral and radiometric resolution.
It is highly recommended that project presentations and reports include some applications of above
techniques. For example use of GIS/RS in Flood Studies with examples from Turkey and/or from
the World, use of GIS/RS in Environmental disasters like forest fire or pollution with examples
from Turkey and/or from the World.
Note: Each group will present their homework starting from last week of December or first
week of January. Project reports are due before first project is presented.
There will be total 10 groups (5 GIS and 5 RS strictly) for total 56 students. Each group will have a
leader and total 5 or 6 members. 6 groups will have 6 members and 4 groups will have 5 members,
these numbers are strict, no group can have 4 or 7 total members. Group leaders have to determine
the group members and the homework topic by December 3, 2014 with coordination of CE375
assistants (Melih Calamak and Meric Selamoglu). These group numbers will be assigned as first
come first served basis: for example once 4 groups with 5 members are registered to the assistants
then the remaining students have to form groups with 6 members. Each group will prepare a
presentation of 20 min, while each group member has to present “equal” part (~3 or 4min) of the
presentation. All presentations will be given at CZ-14. Selection of group members from different
sections is allowed (for example forming a group with 3 members from section 1 and 3 members
from section 2 is allowed).
Both homework topics and presentation sequence preferences will be honored on “first come first
served basis”. When coordinating with the assistant tell 1) your group members, 2) your topic
(GIS/RS), 3) when your group wants to present (first, second, sixth, last, etc). If a certain topic
already has 5 groups registered for it, then the remaining groups have to register for the other topic.
If you cannot find a group or a member, send an email to the assistant to learn the list of students
that have not registered any topic yet (please do this only as last resort).
