INTRODUCTION
The National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation (formerly National Atlas Organisation) was set
up in 1956. The organization is engaged in preparation of maps and atlases of different themes using
aerial photographs, remote sensing data, GIS, Field surveys etc. The organization is unique of its kind in
the country in the field of Thematic Cartography and Geographical research. It has imparted training to
Geographers, Geologists and Professionals from various disciplines belonging to various state / central
government departments, Universities, colleges and autonomous institutions. NATMO offers the
following training programs in the various fields of Cartography, Remote Sensing, Global Positioning
System and Geographical Information System during the period from 1st. February, 2014 to 31st.
March, 2015.
Global Positioning System (One week)
Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System (Two weeks)
Digital Cartography and Map Reproduction (Three weeks)
Digital Mapping and Geographical Information System (Four weeks)
OBJECTIVE
The main objectives of the NATMO Training Courses are:


To train and develop human resources at professional level




To provide exposure to the participants about the application of Aerial Photographs and Satellite
Imagery,
 extraction of thematic inputs and their applications in Geographical Information System
(GIS)
To provide exposure on advanced mapping techniques

COURSE – I GPS
Global Positioning System
Course Curriculum:
(A) Geodesy: Introduction, Mean Sea level, Basic concepts of Geoids, Basic concepts of
Spheroids /Ellipsoid, Geographic latitude & longitude World Geodetic System (WGS- 84)
(B) Projection: Basic concepts of Projection, Different types of Projection classes and varieties,
Extrinsic and Intrinsic problems, Universal Transverse Mercator Projection, Conical Two Standard
Parallel Projection (for India)
(C) Global Positioning System (GPS): Introduction, Observation principle and Signal structure
(Carrier & Code), Structure of GPS Navigation Data, Receiver and its components, Errors and
Accuracy, Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS)
(D) Practical: Field survey & Project work.
COURSE –II RSGIS
Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System
Course Curriculum:
(A) Satellite Remote Sensing (SRS): Principles and Elements of Satellite Remote Sensing,
Digital Image Processing, Satellite Image Interpretation, Applications of Aerial Photo and
Satellite Imagery in Thematic Mapping
(B) Geographical Information System (GIS): Basic Concept of GIS, Hardware and Software
Options and Applications, Comparison of raster and vector methods, Development of database
(data entry- spatial and non spatial data, linking with spatial and non spatial data), Application of
GIS
(C) Practical: in ERDAS, ARC/INFO, MapInfo environment

COURSE –III DCMR
Digital Cartography and Map Reproduction
Course Curriculum:
(A) Overview on Mapping / GIS software (Map-info/Arc-info). Concept of projection and scale.
Hands-on Georeferencing and Digitization. Preparation of Geo-data base.
(B) Introduction to Adobe Illustrator. Data Import/Export, Projection and Scale. Layout
preparation in Adobe Illustrator. Map composition, Symbolisation, Colour optimization and
CP separation.
(C) Printing and Graphic Art, Imposition etc.
COURSE –IV DMGIS
Digital Mapping and Geographical Information System
Course Curriculum:
(A) Fundamentals of Remote Sensing: Basic principles of Remote Sensing, Remote sensing
platforms and satellites, Remote sensing sensors, Image processing and enhancement, Pattern
recognition, classification and accuracy assessment.
(B) Digital Mapping & Geographical Information System: Basic concept of GIS, Component
of GIS, Computer hardware, GIS software modules, comparison of Raster and Vector methods,
Development of database (data entry- spatial and non-spatial data, linking of spatial and nonspatial data), Application of GIS in real world (mapping Overlays etc., GIS packages –
ARC/INFO, MapInfo etc.)
(D) Project Work

Training courses are conducted at the NATMO HQ, Kolkata in the Premises of Research, Development

and Training Division housed at the 7 floor, CGO Complex, DF-Block, Salt Lake, Kolkata-700064,
West Bengal.
FACULTY MEMBERS
A well-qualified and experienced team of officers and members of staff of NATMO in the field of Aerial
Photography, Remote Sensing, GIS and Thematic Cartography are the faculty members for conducting
the courses. Medium of instruction for the training courses is English/Hindi.
MODE OF PAYMENT
The course fee has to be paid by Bank Draft Drawn in favour of “Senior Accounts Officer, RPAO II
(SOI and NATMO), Kolkata” payable at Kolkata. Course fee is non-refundable.
ACCOMMODATION
NATMO does not provide hostel facility. Out station candidates are to arrange accommodation
themselves.
AWARD OF CERTIFICATES
On satisfactory completion of the courses, certificates will be awarded to the trainees.
