a fully integrated adult and paediatric
ophthalmology service, in state-of-the-art
equipped theatre and clinic space.
The Urgent Eye Clinic runs from Lister Hospital:
The ophthalmology service accepts all new
referrals via Choose & Book or written.
We offer a range of general and specialist clinics,
across our three main sites including:
Urgent Eye Clinic at Lister Hospital
Day case ophthalmology surgery at the
Lister, with some inpatient stays where
clinically appropriate
Medical outpatient services at the Lister,
QEII and Hertford County hospitals
Diabetic retinopathy screening at all sites
and satellite clinics

Medical Retina Clinics
Rapid Age Related Macula Degeneration
Clinic
Intravitreal Therapy Service for age related
macular degeneration (AMD); diabetic
macular oedema (DMO); and retinal vein
occlusion (RVO)
Fast Track Glaucoma Clinics

Orthoptic Clinics
Optometry, Contact Lens & Low Visual Aid

Vitreoretinal Surgery Clinics
Digital Imaging Services including Optical
Coherence Tomography, anterior and
posterior segment photography,

All referrals for urgent eye clinics should be made
directly by GPs or Optometrists and must be
accompanied by a written referral. Patients should
present at the Treatment Centre, where they will
be directed to the Urgent Eye Clinic.
Retinal Screening & referrals
Retinal screening is offered at Lister Hospital,
Stevenage; QEII, Welwyn Garden City; Hertford
County Hospitals and also satellite clinics at:
Herts and Essex Hospital, Bishops Stortford;
Royston Community Hospital; Cheshunt
Community Hospital; Park Drive Health Centre,
Baldock and Portmill Surgery, Hitchin.
To access the Trust’s diabetic eye screening
service, patients must be registered with a GP
within the East and North Hertfordshire area.

medical, surgical or urgent consultation should

Prior Approval
GPs and optometrists should be aware that prior
approval processes are in place within East and
North Hertfordshire CCG and Bedfordshire CCG
for cataracts.
Our consultants
We have a number of consultants with special
interests in Medical Retina, Vitreoretinal Surgery,
Glaucoma and Paediatric Ophthalmology.
Our consultants are supported by a range of
specialists including orthoptists, optometrists, and
our contact lens specialist. We also have two
trainees from the East of England Deanery and a
number of GP specialty trainees.
