Instructions for taking the Compass/ESL test
For the IELP Program
1. Obtain permission ticket to take Compass/ESL from the department of
Multicultural Student Affairs in C247. (May take test on same day if have completed
college application.)
2. Take test in Testing Center located in B101.
3. Test results will be sent to the ‘Multicultural Student Affairs’ in C247, but will not
be available for 2-3 days.
4. Call ‘Multicultural Student Affairs’ after 2 days to make an appointment with a
staff member to review your results and register for classes. CALL 708-974-5475
Information about the Compass/ESL test
•
The test is divided into four parts: Writing, Grammar, Reading, and Listening.
•
The test is taken on a computer, with multiple choice questions for grammar, reading,
and listening parts.
•
The writing test is an essay which requires students to ‘type’ several complete sentences,
forming 2-3 paragraphs about a topic or a personal opinion.
•
The test is lengthy but has no time limit. Expect at least two hours of your time to
complete test.
Preparation for the Compass/ESL test
•
Material to review English usage and sentence structure is available in the Multicultural
Student Affairs department.
•
The Compass/ESL test should be taken well before classes are scheduled to begin each
new semester. Seats may not be available if test is taken as late as a week before the start
of classes.
